OBS does not have a built-in setting that detects newly uploaded YouTube videos and adds them to a YouTube playlist. To do that, use a separate automation that identifies each eligible video and calls YouTube’s Data API. If instead you mean playing local video files in an OBS scene, use OBS’s VLC Video source; that local playback list does not change a YouTube playlist.
First, choose which kind of playlist you mean
“Playlist in OBS” and “YouTube playlist” are different things. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a list of local media files in a scene. A YouTube playlist is a collection managed on YouTube, and adding an upload to it requires a YouTube playlist-management operation.

YouTube represents a live broadcast as a video resource, while playlists and playlist items are separate resources. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview and YouTube Data API reference.
For local playback: make OBS play a media list
If you want OBS to play a sequence of files during a scene, add a VLC Video source and configure its local media list. The source supports looping and shuffle; it needs VLC installed. Follow the current OBS Media Sources guide for the controls available in your installed version.

This is not automatic YouTube upload monitoring. A new file must be made available to the local list through your own file-management workflow, and the source plays media locally rather than editing playlist membership on YouTube.
For a YouTube playlist: automate insertion through the Data API
The playlist operation is handled by YouTube’s API, not by an OBS scene. The insertion request needs the destination playlist ID, the video ID to add, and OAuth authorization for the account that can edit that playlist. Google documents the process in its playlist implementation guide.

1. Identify the destination playlist
Choose the playlist and obtain its playlist ID. The YouTube Data API can list playlists for the authenticated channel; use the ID of the destination playlist in the insertion request. Make sure the account authorizing the request has permission to edit it.
2. Build a separate way to identify new uploads
Your automation needs to receive or discover each new video ID, then decide whether that upload belongs in the playlist. You must define the eligibility rules—for example, which channel or upload types qualify—before inserting anything. The API insertion documentation explains how to add an identified video; it does not prescribe a complete, turnkey upload-monitoring trigger or polling schedule.

3. Send an OAuth-authorized insertion request
Call playlistItems.insert with a playlist item whose snippet contains the destination playlistId and a video resource ID. The resource ID uses kind youtube#video and the new video’s ID:

4. Use OBS integration only when it serves another purpose
OBS can be extended with Python or Lua scripts, and external applications can interact with it through its built-in WebSocket endpoint. Those are possible integration points for coordinating an OBS setup, but they do not replace the YouTube API call that edits playlist membership. See the OBS Developer Guide.

A live stream’s broadcast lifecycle—creating, starting, or renewing a broadcast—is separate from adding uploaded videos to a playlist. The OBS forum’s Live Stream Segmenter listing describes broadcast automation, including automatic broadcast renewal through YouTube APIs; it does not document automatic insertion of new uploads into a playlist.

The listing identifies Live Stream Segmenter 1.1.4, created January 13, 2026, for OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It lists a livestream-permitted account, a Google Cloud project with YouTube Data API v3 enabled, and an OAuth 2.0 desktop client among its requirements. Check the listing for current compatibility and setup details before installing.
Troubleshoot the workflow
- The video does not appear in the playlist: Confirm that the automation has the correct playlist ID and video ID, and that the insertion request completed successfully. Check the playlist items using the YouTube Data API.
- The API rejects the write: Confirm that the request uses OAuth authorization for an account allowed to edit the destination playlist. A playlist ID alone does not grant write access.
- Nothing happens after an upload: OBS does not establish an upload monitor. Check the separate automation responsible for discovering uploads, applying its eligibility rules, and passing the resulting video ID to the insertion step.
- OBS plays files but YouTube’s playlist is unchanged: That is expected when using VLC Video. It plays local media; playlist membership must be changed through YouTube’s playlist tools or Data API.
- A broadcast renews but no upload is added: Broadcast renewal is not playlist insertion. Verify that a separate workflow calls
playlistItems.insert.
