Use YouTube’s Live Control Room to check a suspected problem, and use an authorized YouTube Live Streaming API poller to detect changes and send alerts automatically. Monitor both the incoming stream’s status and health and, when viewer-facing availability matters, the associated broadcast’s lifecycle: an active feed alone does not prove that viewers can watch the event.
What to monitor: the incoming stream and the broadcast
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream, the incoming audio-video feed sent to YouTube, from a liveBroadcast, the event viewers watch. The stream’s status and health describe the ingest side; the broadcast has its own lifecycle. Check both if your alert is meant to indicate whether the public event is available, not merely whether YouTube is receiving input.
The API’s streamStatus=active indicates that YouTube is receiving data through that stream. It is not proof that every viewer can watch successfully. Health information concerns ingest and configuration; the broadcast status helps establish the event’s viewer-facing lifecycle.
Check a stream manually in Live Control Room
When you can check the channel yourself, Live Control Room is the built-in place to inspect stream health and status messages during a live session. YouTube’s status messages can include specific errors and instructions. Use those messages to confirm a suspected issue and guide troubleshooting rather than treating a third-party alert as a diagnosis.

Build automated outage alerts with the Live Streaming API
1. Authorize access and select the right stream
Authorize an application to access the relevant YouTube channel, then use the Live Streaming API’s liveStreams.list method and request the status part. The list method requires the appropriate OAuth authorization; select the intended stream using its identifiers or other available resource parts rather than assuming the first result is the one your automation uses.
2. Read status and health fields
Inspect liveStream.status.streamStatus and liveStream.status.healthStatus. Documented stream-status values include active, created, error, inactive, and ready. Health values include good, ok, bad, and noData. The API defines noData as the backend having no health-status information for that stream; it is unknown, not by itself proof of an outage.

Health data can include lastUpdateTimeSeconds and configuration issue entries with a type, severity, reason, and description. Include the returned issue details and timestamp in the alert. For example, YouTube documents issues such as low video ingestion and mismatched or unsupported video settings; use the specific returned issue as a diagnostic clue rather than guessing at a cause.
3. Decide what should trigger an alert
Set rules around the stream’s expected operating state. A practical starting point is to alert when streamStatus is error or inactive while the stream is expected to be live, or when health is bad. Treat noData or an old lastUpdateTimeSeconds as stale or unknown health that needs corroboration, not as conclusive evidence viewers have lost the stream. These are operational rules based on the API’s field meanings, not YouTube-prescribed alert policies.

If public availability is the requirement, also inspect the associated broadcast’s lifecycle. A healthy-looking input and an available viewer-facing broadcast are related conditions, but they are not interchangeable.
4. Poll at a deliberate cadence and reduce alert noise
YouTube’s API documentation does not prescribe a polling interval for outage monitoring. Choose one based on how quickly you need to detect a problem and your API quota. More frequent checks can detect a state change sooner, but use more API calls and can expose transient states.

- Require a failure condition to persist across multiple checks if a brief state change should not page someone.
- Include the channel or stream identity, associated broadcast when relevant, observed status, check time, last health update, and any issue details.
- Send a distinct recovery notification when the condition clears.
- Track the poller’s last successful API check and whether the notification was delivered. If the poller or alert route fails, YouTube’s health fields cannot tell you that your monitoring system has stopped working.
Debouncing, recovery messages, delivery checks, and escalation are choices for your monitoring implementation; the API provides state data, not a turnkey alert channel.

The right design depends on what “down” means for your channel: an ingest error, an inactive feed that should be live, a broadcast lifecycle problem, or a failure in your own monitoring and notification path. Alert on the relevant conditions separately so an unknown health reading does not get mislabeled as a confirmed viewer outage.
