Moderate Super Chats and Super Stickers just like other live-chat messages: use YouTube’s held-message and blocked-word controls, add slow mode or participation limits when needed, and give trusted moderators clear authority to act. Paying to post does not exempt a message from YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
Set up moderation before the stream
Use YouTube Studio’s current Content controls to configure live-chat moderation and blocked words. Labels and locations can vary by device and change over time, so check the current Studio interface if a setting has moved. YouTube’s guides explain the available controls in Moderate live chat and Manage your channel’s moderation settings.
Choose how aggressively to hold messages
YouTube offers None, Basic, and Strict moderation levels for potentially inappropriate live-chat messages. Basic holds messages YouTube identifies as potentially inappropriate; Strict holds a broader range. Held messages remain hidden unless a moderator acts on them. YouTube cautions that no automated system catches everything, so these settings are a screening aid, not a substitute for human review.
When a held message is shown, it appears in chat at its original entry time. Showing it publishes the message; leaving it alone or hiding it keeps it out of public chat. Choose a setting with the stream’s subject and expected chat volume in mind: broader filtering may reduce exposure to abuse, but can also delay legitimate messages.

Add blocked words and consider link controls
Build a channel-specific blocked-word list in the moderation settings. It can catch messages that contain or closely match configured terms, but it cannot interpret context or reliably identify every harmful variation. Review the relevant link controls there as well if links are a concern.
Use slow mode or participation limits when needed
Slow mode limits how often each user can send a chat message. YouTube’s help guidance says channel owners, moderators, and members are exempt from the slow-mode limit. Participation restrictions and slower posting can make a busy or abusive feed easier to manage, but they may also make ordinary conversation less immediate.

Assign moderators with appropriate permissions
Add trusted people as moderators and choose standard or managing permissions according to what they need to do. Standard moderators can remove content, time out or hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have additional controls, but YouTube says moderator permissions do not provide access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio. For a nonstop stream, decide who is covering each period, how a handover works, and when a moderator should escalate an uncertain or serious case. YouTube does not prescribe a staffing rota, response-time target, or staffing ratio; these are operating decisions for your channel.

Moderate paid messages during the livestream
Super Chats and Super Stickers are subject to the same moderation approach as other live-chat messages. A paid message’s visibility or pinning does not make its content immune from review. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: creators can moderate Supers the same way as live chat. See Manage YouTube Super Chat & Super Stickers for Live Chat.
- Check the live-chat feed and held queue. Review paid and unpaid messages against your channel rules and YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
- Show only messages you have reviewed and want to publish. If a message is held, a moderator with the needed controls must show it; otherwise it stays hidden.
- Respond proportionately to violations. Remove a violating message, time out the sender, or hide the user from the channel. Hiding makes that user’s messages and comments invisible to other viewers without notifying them.
- Use a timeout when a temporary pause is appropriate. YouTube lists timeout choices of 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 24 hours.
- Escalate ambiguous cases according to your own policy. For a continuous broadcast, make sure moderators know whom to contact and what to do when no lead moderator is immediately available.
Review chat and Supers after the stream
You can review live-chat history and Supers, and YouTube Analytics provides revenue reporting for Supers. The live chat itself is not available after the stream ends, although a replay may be available on the archive by default.

Deleting a Super Chat message after the live stream does not result in a refund. Separately, when YouTube moderates a Super Chat or Super Sticker for a policy violation, YouTube donates its portion of the revenue to charity. That policy is not the same as a creator-issued refund.
