OBS Studio is the best starting point if you want free software to run a continuous YouTube stream from a low-cost PC. It is flexible and YouTube lists it as a no-charge encoder, but that does not mean every PC can stream reliably around the clock. Begin with a simple scene, modest settings and a real-world test before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Which software should you use?
For a do-it-yourself setup on a budget, start with OBS Studio. YouTube lists it among its software encoders, and the OBS Project describes it as free and open source. OBS can encode and send your broadcast, but the PC, power and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue.
OBS’s system requirements page cautions that compatibility does not guarantee a system can stream or record successfully. CPU demands vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Treat OBS as a strong starting point—not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 output.

Check YouTube eligibility before configuring OBS
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Confirm that the channel can go live before spending time setting up a continuous stream. YouTube describes an encoder as the software or hardware that converts video into a format it can receive.
Set a conservative starting quality
For a low-cost PC and an uncertain connection, start by testing 720p at 30 fps. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 8 Mbps as the recommended bitrate and 3 Mbps as the minimum for 720p30. These are platform figures, not evidence that a particular Indian broadband or mobile connection can sustain them continuously.

Use the codec-specific figures below rather than treating minimum and recommended bitrates as interchangeable. YouTube’s encoder guidance was checked on 2026-10-03.

If the PC or connection struggles, lower the resolution or bitrate rather than assuming a brief speed-test result predicts long-term performance. YouTube recommends testing at the intended bitrate with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages.

Configure OBS and YouTube’s encoder settings
- Run the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard. Keep the initial scene simple: unnecessary sources, animations and complex overlays add work. Review the wizard’s output settings and test them rather than treating its recommendation as a guarantee.
- Choose the stream protocol and key. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the stream and use its stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it could send a stream to your broadcast.
- Set an encoder and rate control. YouTube’s published encoder baseline supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For the initial 720p30 test, select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen codec and the connection’s stable upload capacity.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Test the complete broadcast. Use the intended scene, representative audio and motion, target resolution and bitrate, and a wired connection if available. Watch OBS’s output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages before depending on the setup for a long run.
Keep the PC and connection from becoming the weak link
A local OBS stream depends on the computer, power and network staying operational. The available platform and OBS guidance does not establish a low-cost PC specification, Indian internet plan or home power arrangement that guarantees 24/7 uptime.
When OBS reports dropped frames
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one unable to keep up with the configured bitrate; too many can disconnect the stream. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering bitrate to match stable upload and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic. That is an OBS troubleshooting suggestion, not a universal rule for every ISP or continuous broadcast.

- Lower the video bitrate and test again; if needed, lower resolution or frame rate.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi where possible. OBS notes Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.
- Remember that a cable cannot fix inadequate service, ISP congestion or insufficient upload capacity. Network problems may be outside OBS’s control.
- Simplify the scene if the PC is struggling, then test again using the intended broadcast workload.
Choose between local OBS and a cloud stream
Compare total cost, dependence on your home PC, encoding load, recovery after an interruption and support for your intended continuous format. A cloud or hardware encoder is not automatically cheaper: check current provider prices, availability and limits before choosing one. A local OBS setup avoids a streaming-service subscription, but it relies on your own computer, power and connection staying up.
