For separate OBS Media Sources, enable Show nothing when playback ends. For a sequence of local clips, try putting them in one VLC Video playlist source. Neither setting guarantees a gapless transition on every setup, so test your actual clips before going live.
First check whether the freeze is actually reaching viewers
A still image in the OBS preview does not by itself prove that viewers are receiving a frozen frame. Check the outgoing program and, during a test stream, YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing beforehand with audio and movement similar to the real event, then monitoring stream health while live: YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming guidance.
Stop an individual Media Source from holding its last frame
If each video is a separate OBS Media Source, OBS may leave its final frame visible after playback ends. In the source’s settings, enable Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this option as useful for video files so they do not show the last frame indefinitely. It is on by default in the documented settings, but check the source rather than assuming its current state. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Hiding a source at the end prevents its last image from staying on screen; it does not make separate files transition seamlessly. If the source is unloaded and later activated again, also check Close file when inactive. OBS warns that enabling it can leave a short period when the source is not showing while the file reloads; it is off by default.

Play consecutive clips from one VLC Video playlist
For several local clips intended to run in order, a single VLC Video source is the most direct OBS workflow to try. OBS documents playlist support, with shuffle off and looping on by default. With shuffle off, the listed sequence is preserved; with looping on, the playlist repeats. Confirm both settings match your intended show.
- Install VLC. The VLC Video source depends on a VLC installation. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that the architectures match.
- Add one VLC Video source. In the OBS scene where the gaming VOD should appear, add a VLC Video source and add the local files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Check playlist behavior. Turn shuffle off for a fixed order. Choose whether looping should be on: leave it enabled if the sequence should repeat, or disable it if the playlist should stop after its last clip.
- Test the handoff. Watch the end of one clip and the start of the next, and listen for an audio gap as well as checking the image. Test scene changes too if your broadcast uses them.
OBS documents playlist playback, not a guarantee that every combination of files will transition with zero blank or stale frames. Test the actual files and scene setup before relying on the playlist in a public stream. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

Test before the scheduled stream
- Use the exact clips and scene changes planned for the broadcast.
- Check clip order, shuffle, and whether the playlist should loop.
- Watch the picture and listen for breaks at each file boundary.
- Make a short private or unlisted test with representative audio and motion, then review YouTube’s stream-health information.
What not to change for this particular symptom
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Those are encoder recommendations, not a fix for OBS displaying a local file’s last frame. Likewise, YouTube’s HLS guidance describes segmented transport and applies to HLS ingestion; its segment-duration and playlist requirements do not establish a remedy for a local OBS source transition. Do not change HLS settings unless you are actually using HLS ingestion. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
FFmpeg’s concat protocol is another technical playback approach for reading multiple resources sequentially, but its documented example does not establish it as a drop-in fix for arbitrary codecs or OBS setups. See FFmpeg’s concat protocol documentation.
