If OBS closes while loading a large gaming VOD playlist, first isolate the playlist files, source filters and scene complexity in a copy of your scene collection. A full application crash is different from dropped frames or a stream disconnect, so changing YouTube bitrate or network settings is not the first diagnostic step. The exact cause depends on your OBS version, operating system, source type and crash report.
Start by identifying what is crashing
Note your OBS version and operating system, how the playlist is loaded, whether the files are local or network-based, and which filters are applied to the source. A VLC Video Source playlist, a media source, and a playlist handled by another method do not have identical failure points.
Also distinguish OBS closing from a stream that remains open but drops frames or disconnects. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide treats dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as connection problems between the computer and remote ingest server; that guidance does not by itself explain a crash during playlist loading.
Isolate the playlist and media files
- Make a copy of the scene collection. Run tests in the copy so you can simplify sources without changing your working setup.
- Reduce the playlist to a few known-good files. Test the smaller playlist. If it loads, add the remaining files back in smaller batches until you find the item or group associated with the crash.
- Test suspect files individually. Remove invalid or suspect entries and try again. An individual OBS issue report describes a crash after an invalid file was added to a VLC playlist and the properties dialog was closed; this is a reason to check file validity, not proof that every playlist crash has the same cause. - Check the media path and availability. Confirm that each entry points to the intended file or network location and that it can be opened outside the playlist. If the playlist references network media, compare with a small test using known-good local files to see whether the failure follows the media source.
Test VLC filters and track changes
If the playlist uses an OBS VLC Video Source, inspect the filters attached to that source. Temporarily remove a Video Delay (Async) filter, if present, and test loading and changing tracks. A historical OBS issue report describes a crash while changing tracks in a VLC playlist with that filter. Change one thing at a time and note whether the crash occurs while opening the source properties, loading entries, starting playback or switching tracks. That distinction helps make a crash report useful.
Reduce scene complexity while testing
Try the same short playlist in a simpler copied scene. Temporarily disable or remove nonessential sources, including sources that are not visible in the current layout. OBS notes that sources consume resources even when not visible, and recommends limiting expensive sources and keeping scene collections focused in its encoding performance troubleshooting guidance. Simplifying the scene is a controlled test for resource pressure; it is not proof that resource use caused the crash.

If the setup includes game capture, overlays or FPS counters, test without them as a separate step. OBS lists overlays and FPS counters among software that can conflict with game capture in its game capture troubleshooting guide. That guidance concerns capture conflicts and does not establish a playlist-loading cause.
Use the crash report to choose the next step
If a minimal copied scene still crashes with a few known-good files and no suspect filters, preserve the crash report and regular OBS log. Record the trigger, source type, file locations, filters tested, and whether the crash happens on load or track change. Seek help through OBS’s official support channels and include those details rather than assuming a universal fix.

A separate open report describes intermittent OBS closure shortly after starting an existing scheduled YouTube broadcast on Windows 11 with OBS 32.2.1. That report concerns broadcast startup, not loading a VOD playlist, so it should not be treated as a diagnosis for this symptom: the separate broadcast-startup report.
Common troubleshooting missteps
- Changing YouTube stream settings first: bitrate and ingest settings relate to stream delivery; they do not identify why OBS itself closes while loading a playlist.
- Reinstalling OBS or buying hardware without evidence: neither is established as a general fix for playlist-load crashes. First isolate files, filters and scene complexity, then use the crash report to narrow the fault.
- Changing several variables at once: if the crash stops, you will not know which change mattered. Keep a brief record and test one variable at a time.
