Yes, a headless Linux PC can use less electricity than the same PC with a display attached, because the display is no longer drawing power. But the computer still uses electricity to stay awake, receive and decode video, and play the playlist. There is no universal wattage for headless YouTube playback: it depends on the PC, browser, video format and resolution, and what your measurement includes.
Headless playback is not idle
Removing a monitor can lower the power use of the whole setup, but it does not turn the PC itself into an idle server. A computer playing YouTube is doing active work. ENERGY STAR distinguishes active operation from idle and sleep; its computer specification defines active state as including active processing and data access. ENERGY STAR’s Version 8.0 computer specification also treats long idle, sleep, and active operation as distinct states.
Be clear about the boundary of any comparison. A wall-meter reading with the monitor disconnected measures the PC and its power supply; a reading with the display, speakers, or other equipment connected includes those devices too. To estimate the monitor’s contribution, measure it separately or compare whole setups while changing only whether the display is included.
What published measurements show—and what they do not
Available examples show that YouTube playback can draw substantially more power than headless idle on a particular machine. They are system-specific measurements, not a prediction for every Linux PC.

The two playback figures should not be used to rank the machines: the tests differ in hardware, resolution, browser, date, and measurement setup. These sources also do not establish that Linux universally uses less electricity than another operating system, or provide a typical power figure for Linux YouTube playback.
Why YouTube quality changes the workload
“YouTube playback” is not a fixed test condition. YouTube says playback quality can respond to connection speed, player or screen size, source quality, and browser support for newer formats such as VP9. If quality changes between runs, power readings may change too. For a useful comparison, record the selected resolution, frame rate where relevant, browser, and whether hardware video decoding is working. The available sources do not identify one Linux browser setup that minimizes power on all PCs.

YouTube’s general system-requirements page gives approximate sustained connection speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, 5 Mbps for 1080p HD, 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD, 1.1 Mbps for 480p SD, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p SD. These are service guidance figures, not power measurements. The same page lists Ubuntu 10 or later among requirements for premium video. Measure your own PC at the wall
A plug-in electricity meter is the practical way to measure whole-system consumption. Compare the same PC and power supply under controlled conditions rather than treating a published figure as your expected result.

- Choose the measurement boundary. Decide whether the reading will include only the PC or also the monitor, speakers, and other equipment. Use the same boundary for each run.
- Keep the setup consistent. Use the same browser, network connection, playlist, and playback resolution. Note frame rate and other playback conditions when relevant.
- Measure settled idle. Leave the computer awake with no video playing and record average watts and accumulated kWh over a representative interval.
- Measure playback. Play the playlist at the chosen resolution for a comparable interval. Let readings settle, record average watts and accumulated kWh, and repeat if the meter fluctuates.
- Compare energy over time. For nonstop playback, daily or weekly kWh is more informative than a brief peak. To estimate cost, multiply measured kWh by your own electricity tariff; the tariff and resulting cost are location-specific.
If comparing different computers, record each system’s headless idle baseline as well as playback draw, and keep the display and peripherals treatment consistent. Do not compare an active playback reading from one setup with an idle reading from another and attribute the whole difference to the monitor.
