Possibly, for a single stationary display and a simple loop—but there is no universal cost winner. A suitable used thin client can play YouTube locally without a paid signage-management plan. The savings depend on the device’s purchase and power costs, the software and support you need, and what the cloud plan actually includes. First, separate the cost of playing a video from the cost of managing screens.
What are you comparing?
A YouTube loop on a screen involves video playback, while a cloud signage service may also provide publishing, scheduling, monitoring, and recovery tools. A cloud signage fee is not automatically the cost of playing the YouTube video itself. If by “cloud service” you mean cloud-hosted video rendering or streaming rather than a signage CMS, the comparison changes; the available examples here do not establish a particular service or its price.
For one screen that can be set up and checked in person, a local thin client may be enough. For several remote screens, frequent content changes, or a need for centralized monitoring and recovery, compare the management features as well as the bill.
Will a used thin client play the loop reliably?
Check the exact device and playback software
“Thin client” is a hardware category, not a guarantee of compatibility. Confirm that the specific device can run a current compatible browser or the signage player you intend to use, and test it with the actual video, resolution, frame rate, and location before deploying it. Framebaker documents support for refurbished Dell, HP, and Lenovo thin clients that meet its Framebaker Player requirements: Intel 8th generation or newer, 4 GB RAM, and 16 GB storage. Those are requirements for that player, not universal YouTube minimums. Framebaker’s supported-hardware information should be checked for the player you plan to use.

Check the connection and video quality
YouTube Help advises using an up-to-date browser and operating system with a good internet connection. Its approximate sustained-speed recommendations are 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. YouTube also notes that HD streaming in a browser is unavailable except in Safari for HD streaming; supported devices can stream HD. These are YouTube’s guidance figures, not a guarantee that a particular thin client, Wi-Fi connection, or signage setup will sustain playback. See YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices.
For comparison, Airtame’s own YouTube signage setup says 1080p needs at least 5 Mbps and reports playback up to 1080p at 60 frames per second depending on hardware. Those are Airtame-specific limits and guidance, not general thin-client specifications. Airtame’s YouTube signage instructions describe its loop option and setup.
Confirm the video can be shown
In Airtame’s documented workflow, YouTube videos and playlists must be public or unlisted; private videos cannot be shown, and availability may depend on country. Confirm access and playback in the actual display location before relying on a loop. YouTube’s rights and platform policies also apply: having a URL that plays does not establish permission to display or reuse the material. YouTube Help and Airtame’s setup guidance cover the cited playback requirements and restrictions.

What does cloud management add?
Cloud signage products can add remote publishing and device management; the exact features differ by provider and plan. Some managed players also describe resilience features that a basic browser loop on a used computer does not necessarily have. For example, Vojo’s Smart DOOH Player specification describes locally cached content, continued playback during network loss, recovery after freezes, and restart after power loss. Those capabilities apply to Vojo’s described player and platform, not to any arbitrary thin client. Vojo’s player information gives its feature context.

Do not assume all YouTube playback is cached for offline use. SmartSign2Go says third-party YouTube/Vimeo content in its setup may be loaded anew at least once a day; that is a vendor-specific note, not a rule for other signage systems. See SmartSign2Go’s setup information.
How to compare the real costs
Calculate the thin client’s monthly running cost
Include the device and any replacement storage, adapters, software, and electricity. Measure the device’s power while it plays the target video rather than assuming a generic wattage.

Monthly electricity cost = measured watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours per month × local electricity price per kWh.
Then compare the result, plus any recurring software or maintenance costs, with the cloud plan for the same number of screens and the features you actually need. There is no established model-specific power figure or typical used-device price here, so a reliable payback number requires your own device price, measured watts, local tariff, and required operating hours.
Use a simple payback test
Simple payback in months = net upfront hardware cost ÷ (monthly cloud bill avoided − monthly local electricity and software costs). The net upfront cost should include any necessary accessories or replacement parts. If the monthly saving in the denominator is zero or negative, there is no cost payback under those assumptions. This simple calculation also leaves out the value of your time, maintenance, and any difference in service life.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When each approach makes sense
A used thin client may suit you if
- You need one fixed screen and can set up and maintain the device yourself.
- The exact model runs your chosen browser or player and passes a sustained test with the target video.
- You do not need centralized scheduling, fleet monitoring, or managed recovery.
- Your measured electricity, software, and upkeep costs still leave a saving against the service you would otherwise buy.
A cloud signage plan may be worth the fee if
- You need to publish or schedule content remotely, particularly across multiple screens.
- You value provider-specific monitoring, support, caching, or recovery features enough to pay for them.
- A local device’s setup and ongoing maintenance would cost more in time or disruption than the plan saves.
Practical setup and troubleshooting checks
- Identify the software first. Choose the browser or signage player, then verify its current supported hardware requirements for the exact thin-client model.
- Test the intended stream. Play the actual public or unlisted video on the device at the intended resolution and frame rate for an extended period. Check for stutter, failed reloads, and whether playback resumes after a restart.
- Check the network at the screen. Compare sustained connection performance with the relevant YouTube guidance, and test the wired or wireless connection you will actually use.
- Measure power and price the full setup. Record playback wattage, operating hours, local electricity rate, device and accessory costs, and any software fee; then use the formulas above.
- Decide what happens when something fails. If you need remote recovery, offline playback, or support, verify that the specific service and player provide those features rather than assuming a local browser loop does.
If playback stutters or drops quality
Check the sustained connection and lower the target resolution if needed. If the connection is adequate, test whether the device and browser can decode the video smoothly; the speed guidance alone does not guarantee hardware compatibility.

If the YouTube video will not load
Confirm the video is public or unlisted for the Airtame workflow, that it is available in the display’s country, and that the chosen software supports the workflow. A private video will not work in Airtame’s documented setup.
If the loop stops after a network or power interruption
Test the behavior rather than assuming recovery. A browser loop on a reused computer is not established to have the cache, freeze recovery, or restart behavior described for Vojo’s managed player.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs to keep uploaded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different kind of service from signage CMS plans: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
