24/7 YouTube Stream Cost: Raspberry Pi 4 with FFmpeg vs. a VPS

A defensible 24/7 YouTube streaming cost comparison starts with measured Pi wall power, your electricity tariff, the stream bitrate, and the VPS’s billable transfer allowance—not the cheapest headline price.

There is no universal cheaper option: compare the Raspberry Pi 4’s measured whole-system power draw and your electricity tariff with a VPS’s compute price plus its outbound-transfer allowance and any overage. At a continuous 6 Mbps, a 30-day YouTube stream sends about 1.94 decimal TB before protocol overhead. That can make a low-cost VPS plan unsuitable even when its monthly compute price looks attractive.

How to compare the real monthly cost

Separate ongoing expenses from setup costs, and use the same stream settings and billing period for both options. A convenient average month is 730 hours; for an exact bill, use the hours in the relevant billing period.

Cost item Raspberry Pi 4 with FFmpeg VPS
Recurring monthly cost Measured average whole-system watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in month × electricity price per kWh, plus any incremental connectivity cost. Compute plan price + outbound-transfer charges or plan upgrades + applicable storage, IPv4, tax, or other provider charges.
One-time cost Board, suitable power supply, boot media, and any other required setup items. Include this in a new-purchase comparison; keep it separate if you already own the Pi. Any setup or other charges specified by the selected provider.
First-year comparison Setup cost + 12 months of electricity and incremental connectivity. If comparing a new purchase, state the hardware amortization period you assume. 12 months of compute and transfer charges, plus applicable provider charges.

This is a personal calculation, not a market-wide verdict: electricity tariffs, transfer billing rules, hardware costs, and taxes depend on your location and choices.

Estimate the Pi’s electricity cost without guessing

The crucial input is the measured average wall draw of your complete setup while it runs the actual FFmpeg command and stream. Multiply that wattage by your local tariff; do not substitute the Pi’s power-supply rating or a published figure from a different workload.

Raspberry Pi documentation reports average Pi 4 currents of 0.6 A at idle, 0.78 A during H.264 video playback, and 1.2 A under stress in its documented setup. Converted at a nominal 5 V, these are approximately 3.0 W, 3.9 W, and 6.0 W, respectively. They are illustrative conversions of approximate currents, not measurements of an FFmpeg YouTube stream. The documented setup included an HDMI monitor, keyboard, and mouse, with Ethernet connected on the Pi 4; additional USB devices can increase consumption. A headless streaming setup can differ, and supply losses, storage, and peripherals affect wall draw. Raspberry Pi power documentation

For example, if your meter reports an average of 5 W at the wall, the monthly electricity use over 730 hours is 5 ÷ 1,000 × 730 = 3.65 kWh. Multiply 3.65 by your local price per kWh to estimate the monthly electricity charge. The 5 W here is an example input, not a claimed Pi 4 stream measurement.

Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A, 15 W USB-C supply for the Pi 4. That is the supply’s recommended capacity, not a claim that the board continuously consumes 15 W. Raspberry Pi power-supply guidance

Calculate 24/7 video transfer before choosing a VPS

A continuous stream’s bitrate determines how much outbound data it sends. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists recommended video bitrates of 3 Mbps for 480p30, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Add audio and protocol overhead when estimating actual transfer, and check how your VPS provider counts billable egress. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Assumed continuous video bitrate Transfer over 30 days, before protocol overhead
5 Mbps About 1.62 decimal TB
6 Mbps About 1.94 decimal TB
17 Mbps About 5.51 decimal TB

These figures are arithmetic from the stated bitrates: bitrate × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8. For 6 Mbps, that is 6,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 × 30 ÷ 8 = 1,944,000,000,000 bytes, or about 1.94 decimal TB. It is not a separate published traffic measurement. Audio and protocol overhead increase the total.

What one VPS example shows—and does not show

VPS.org’s listed starter plan was $2.50/month when accessed in 2026, with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, 10 GB SSD, and 0.5 TB bandwidth. Its listed $10/month plan included 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD, and 2 TB bandwidth. These are that provider’s advertised plans, not typical-market prices or an endorsement. VPS.org plans

At the illustrative 6 Mbps video bitrate, the starter plan’s stated transfer allowance is too small if the stream’s outbound traffic counts against it. The 2 TB plan leaves little margin over the approximately 1.94 decimal TB video-only calculation for a 30-day month, before audio and protocol overhead. Confirm current terms, billable-egress definitions, overage policy, CPU architecture, and performance with the provider before deciding that a plan fits.

Include the Pi’s purchase price only when it belongs in your decision

If you already own a Pi 4, its purchase price is a past expense; compare the future electricity and any incremental connectivity cost against a VPS bill. If you are buying hardware specifically for the stream, include the board, appropriate supply, boot media, and other required setup costs. For a first-year comparison, show the one-time setup outlay separately from recurring costs, or state the amortization period used.

Make the streaming configuration part of the comparison

The Pi and VPS must both sustain the encoder workload and the same intended stream settings for their cost comparison to be meaningful. YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 in its listed settings; it recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube transcodes live ingest into formats for viewers, but that does not establish that a particular Pi 4 and FFmpeg configuration can encode a given resolution and frame rate continuously. YouTube live encoder settings

  • Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate first; these settings affect both encoding load and transfer volume.
  • Use the YouTube ingest and keyframe recommendations for the chosen configuration, then test the complete stream with representative motion and audio.
  • Measure whole-system wall power while the actual stream is running rather than extrapolating from idle or playback data.
  • Monitor YouTube stream health and verify the VPS provider’s transfer accounting and applicable limits.

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its settings guidance is not a certification of any particular Pi/FFmpeg build or VPS plan. YouTube Help: “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”

Account for operational trade-offs that do not have a universal price

A Pi at home relies on your home power and network; a VPS runs in a provider’s infrastructure and region. The practical resilience of either setup depends on your power, internet connection, hardware, provider, configuration, and recovery plan. The available figures do not establish comparative uptime, so treat resilience as a decision factor rather than a quantified advantage.

Similarly, there is no sourced, universal electricity bill or VPS total to quote without your local tariff, measured stream draw, chosen bitrate, and provider’s current egress terms. A fair result keeps those inputs visible instead of presenting one headline cost as everyone’s answer.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the comparison is really about keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live without leaving a Pi or VPS to manage, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
