To show different alerts for different events or milestones, add a variation under the relevant alert type in your alert service, set its trigger condition, customize its appearance and sound, then add the Alert Box to your streaming software and test it before going live. The steps below use Streamlabs’ documented workflow; StreamElements offers a separate overlay-based option.
What an alert variation does
A variation plays a different alert when an event meets a condition you set—for example, a higher tip amount or a subscription milestone. Streamlabs Support describes the feature this way: “Alert Variations allow you to play different alerts based on a viewer’s action meeting specific pre-set conditions.” (Streamlabs Support, “How Do Alert Box Variations Work?”)
Use a variation when the event is the same category but you want its alert to change based on a condition. A separate overlay layout is a different approach: it changes how widgets are arranged, rather than defining a conditional alert within an event category.
Set up a Streamlabs alert variation
- Open Alert Box settings. In the Streamlabs dashboard, go to Alert Box and select the event category you want to customize. The available categories and events depend on the service and platform configuration.
- Add and name the variation. Select Add Variation and give it a name that makes its purpose easy to recognize later.
- Set the trigger condition. Choose the condition that should activate this variation, such as a higher tip amount or a subscription milestone. The condition should distinguish it from the default alert and any other variations for that event.
- Customize the alert. Adjust its image or video, sound, and message as needed. Use the preview as you work to check the presentation.
- Save your settings. Save before leaving the Alert Box settings area or switching sections, so the variation and its customization are retained.
Streamlabs’ documentation describes adding, naming, conditioning, and customizing variations in its live stream alerts setup guide.

OBS Studio or other software
Copy the Alert Box widget URL from Streamlabs, then add it to your software as a browser source. OBS documents browser sources as a way to display web-based overlays; its Browser Source guide covers the source itself. Keep the widget URL private: it can provide access to your overlay.
Make alerts available in each needed scene
If you switch between OBS scenes and want alerts in more than one, check each relevant scene. Streamlabs’ setup guide says to select another scene and repeat the widget-add step so the Alert Box is present there too.

Test the variation before going live
Use the dashboard’s test function or live preview to verify that the alert appears as intended. Check the details that affect what viewers actually see and hear:
- The alert is visible and positioned correctly in the scene.
- The intended event and condition select the correct variation.
- The text, image or video, and sound are the ones you configured.
- The alert timing works with the rest of your overlay.
- The alert is present in every scene where you expect it.
Streamlabs’ official setup materials document preview and testing, but do not set out a universal troubleshooting procedure. If a test fails, first recheck the selected event category and condition, confirm the settings were saved, and verify that the right widget or browser source is in the scene you are testing.

When to use StreamElements instead
StreamElements documents an overlay editor with a native AlertBox widget. That can suit a streamer assembling an overlay from several widgets; Streamlabs’ variation workflow is the documented fit when the goal is to change an alert according to an event condition. These are different setup models, not interchangeable step-by-step instructions. Check the chosen service’s documentation for the platform events and software integration you need: the cited feature pages do not establish that every event is supported on every platform.
StreamElements documents its overlay and AlertBox workflow in its Overlay Editor guide.

Or let it run in the cloud
Alert variations handle what viewers see when events happen; they do not keep a YouTube stream online by themselves. If you also want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. It preserves the quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
