It can be, but there is no universal winner: compare the laptop’s electricity, a fair share of its purchase cost, and any extra internet or reliability costs with the VPS’s compute price, outbound bandwidth, and other charges. The answer also depends on whether the machine must encode video in real time or only send a pre-encoded stream. A VPS’s advertised compute price alone is not a complete comparison.
Compare the full monthly cost, not just the sticker price
Use the same 30-day period and currency for both options. For a device running continuously, estimated monthly electricity use is average watts × 0.72 kilowatt-hours. Multiply that by your local electricity rate per kWh. This is a calculation, not a published measurement of a typical laptop.
- Used laptop: electricity + an appropriate monthly share of the purchase price + any internet or reliability costs that are incremental to this setup.
- VPS: compute plan + outbound bandwidth overage + any relevant storage or other charges.
For a simple purchase-cost allocation, divide what you pay for the laptop by the number of months you expect to use it for this channel. Add that amount to the monthly electricity estimate. Use a plug-in electricity monitor to measure the actual draw of the complete running setup; a processor’s TDP or the wattage printed on the power adapter is not a substitute for measured wall power.
Example calculation with your own inputs
If your measured device averages W watts and electricity costs P per kWh, its estimated monthly electricity cost is W × 0.72 × P. Add your chosen monthly purchase-cost share and any incremental connectivity or reliability costs. This avoids presenting an assumed laptop wattage as if it were representative.

What a VPS costs once stream transfer is included
DigitalOcean’s current Basic Droplet listing gives these monthly plan prices and transfer allowances. Its billing documentation lists additional outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB. These are provider list prices, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet can encode your stream workload. Check the provider’s current terms before choosing a plan.

At a steady 5 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 1.62 TB in decimal units, or about 1.47 TiB, before protocol overhead. At 6 Mbps, it sends about 1.94 TB, or about 1.76 TiB, before overhead. These are derived estimates using 2,592,000 seconds in 30 days, not provider measurements.
That means a 5 Mbps stream’s estimated transfer exceeds 500 GiB and is below 2,000 GiB before overhead. The included allowance and overage treatment matter: calculate the bill using the plan’s applicable transfer rules rather than comparing only the compute price. Decimal TB and binary TiB/GiB are different units.

Encoding determines what kind of computer you need
A setup that encodes a video live has a different compute requirement from one that sends a video file already encoded for streaming. Do not assume that a low-cost VPS can perform real-time encoding simply because it can send a stream. Confirm that the chosen computer or server can sustain the required encoding workload, as well as the network upload.
YouTube supports software encoders running on a computer and hardware encoders. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30. Requirements depend on the selected format and workload; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a stream.
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Test the actual stream configuration rather than relying on a machine’s specifications alone.

When the used laptop is the cheaper fit
- You already own a suitable laptop, or its purchase cost spread across the months you expect to use it is modest.
- Measured electricity use at your local rate is lower than the VPS’s full compute and transfer bill.
- Your home upload connection is adequate and dependable, and you can tolerate maintaining the machine and recovering it if something fails.
- The workload does not require more live-encoding capacity than the laptop can reliably provide.
If buying a laptop solely for this purpose, include the upfront purchase and expected useful life in the comparison. A low electricity figure by itself does not make the setup cheaper if the machine must be replaced soon or needs upgrades.
When a VPS is the better fit
- You need the stream to run without leaving a computer powered on at home.
- Your home internet connection is unreliable or lacks sufficient upload capacity.
- The VPS can handle the actual workload, and its complete monthly bill—including transfer overage and other relevant charges—compares favorably with your laptop total.
- You are comfortable setting up and maintaining a server, including diagnosing encoding, network, and restart problems.
A VPS is not automatically a low-cost substitute for a laptop: ongoing transfer can be substantial for a continuous stream, and compute suitability must be verified separately from bandwidth pricing.

Account for YouTube’s continuous-stream limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you are planning one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, account for this limit in your operating plan; do not assume a single stream will be archived as one complete recording. See YouTube’s current live-stream guidance for the applicable behavior and details.

A third option: hosted prerecorded-video streaming
If your channel plays prerecorded video rather than a live camera feed, a hosted streaming service is another category to consider. - Measure the complete laptop setup’s average wall draw while doing the intended work.
- Calculate monthly laptop electricity as measured watts × 0.72 × your electricity price per kWh.
- Add a sensible monthly share of the laptop’s purchase cost and any incremental internet or reliability expenses.
- Choose a VPS plan that can actually handle the workload, then add bandwidth overage, storage, and other applicable charges.
- Compare both totals over the same 30-day period, then weigh the home connection, recovery needs, and maintenance you are willing to handle.
The laptop is cheaper only when its full monthly equivalent is lower than the VPS’s full bill and it meets the stream’s technical and reliability requirements. Recheck provider prices and YouTube guidance when making the decision, since both can change.
