24/7 YouTube Stream Cost: Proxmox VM vs. Cloud VPS

A fair Proxmox-versus-VPS comparison includes measured power, YouTube bitrate-derived transfer, plan limits, setup, maintenance, and recovery—not just headline prices.

There is no universal cheaper choice. A 24/7 YouTube stream on an existing, low-power Proxmox host can cost less in additional cash than a VPS, but only after you count electricity, internet and power reliability, maintenance, and recovery. A VPS makes compute and outbound data explicit monthly costs; it still needs to be sized, configured, monitored, and recovered. Compare the total cost of configurations that can deliver the same stream—not a home electricity bill against a VPS plan’s headline price.

What you are paying to keep online

The encoder sends one contribution stream to YouTube. Your viewers watch YouTube’s copy, so their playback does not multiply the outbound traffic billed to an encoder VPS. The important data figure is the bitrate sent by the server or home connection to YouTube.

The workload matters as much as the hosting label. A prerecorded file passed through or remuxed may need much less compute than live capture, filters, or real-time software transcoding. OBS capture, hardware encoding, and an automated FFmpeg loop also have different resource and operating requirements. No source establishes one minimum VPS size or universal Proxmox wattage for every such workload.

Estimate the self-hosted monthly cost

Measure the whole host at the wall while the actual stream is running; a power-supply rating or component TDP is not a measurement of its consumption. An outlet-compatible electricity monitor can help. Then use your local tariff:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Monthly operating estimate = (average whole-host watts ÷ 1,000) × hours in billing period × electricity price per kWh + incremental hardware amortization and maintenance + incremental internet or backup-power cost + the value you assign to operator time.

As arithmetic only, 100 W running continuously for a 30-day month uses 72 kWh (0.1 kW × 24 × 30). Multiply 72 by your own currency-per-kWh tariff. This is not a typical-host benchmark. If you buy hardware for the stream, keep that one-time purchase separate from the recurring bill, or state the period over which you amortize it. If a suitable server is already owned and has spare capacity, distinguish its sunk purchase cost from the additional cost of running this stream.

Proxmox VE is only the virtualization layer in this calculation. The host, allocated VM resources, encoder, storage, local network, electricity, internet connection, and recovery plan all matter. Proxmox’s system requirements recommend production-quality server hardware, fast and redundant storage, and redundant gigabit network interfaces. Its stated 1 GB RAM minimum is for evaluation and testing; it recommends at least 2 GB for Proxmox VE and its services, in addition to memory for guests. Those recommendations do not establish the VM resources, encoder performance, power draw, or availability your stream will need.

Estimate a VPS bill—and its transfer fit

Monthly estimate = selected VPS plan price + applicable transfer, storage, IP, tax, or other charges + backups and monitoring + operator time. Check the exact plan and region, how the provider counts traffic, and whether the included outbound allowance covers a full month at your target bitrate with headroom. Transfer units and billing rules may not map exactly to a calculated decimal TB.

YouTube’s encoder settings guide, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends these video bitrates. They are YouTube recommendations, not CPU requirements:

Output AV1/H.265 video bitrate H.264 video bitrate Approximate raw 30-day transfer at that bitrate
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps 3.888 TB at 12 Mbps; 5.508 TB at 17 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps 3.240 TB at 10 Mbps; 4.536 TB at 14 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps 7.776 TB at 24 Mbps; 11.016 TB at 34 Mbps
4K60 35 Mbps 50 Mbps 11.340 TB at 35 Mbps; 16.200 TB at 50 Mbps

Transfer figures are calculations from continuous video bitrate over 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), using decimal bytes, before protocol overhead, audio accounting differences, reconnects, or provider billing rules. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are for video; account for audio separately when estimating total output. Leave margin rather than selecting an allowance exactly equal to the raw calculation. At 12 Mbps, for example, the raw video estimate is 3.888 TB; a plan listing 4,000 GiB may be close, but units, metering, audio, and overhead could change whether it fits.

DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed 2026-10-03, listed these Basic Droplet examples. They are published entry-level plan figures, not evidence that a plan can encode your particular stream. The page describes Basic Droplets as suited to workloads that underuse dedicated threads and positions CPU-optimized Droplets for consistent CPU workloads such as media streaming.

DigitalOcean Basic example Published monthly price vCPU Memory Included transfer SSD
Entry example $4/month 1 512 MiB 500 GiB 10 GiB
Basic $6/month 1 1 GiB 1,000 GiB 25 GiB
Basic $12/month 1 2 GiB 2,000 GiB 50 GiB
Basic $24/month 2 4 GiB 4,000 GiB 80 GiB

DigitalOcean states Droplets moved to per-second billing on January 1, 2026. That billing granularity does not mean a VM allocated continuously for a month costs only for the seconds the encoder is active. Rates and configurations can change; check the current pricing page for the plan and region you would actually use.

Hetzner’s official 2026 price-adjustment page says the adjustment took effect June 15, 2026. It lists a CAX11 at €5.99/month excluding IPv4 as one product- and region-scoped example. That is not comparable to every VPS or a dedicated server; check the current sales configuration, region, and tax treatment before using a price in your own estimate.

Check whether the stream can be delivered from either setup

Cost only helps if the connection and encoder can sustain the intended output. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate, testing before going live with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health while live. Its guide recommends RTMPS and says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” The guide also specifies CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Configure the encoder for a supported protocol and codec, and verify the stream health in YouTube before relying on a continuous run.

  • Home host: test sustained upload from the actual home connection under realistic conditions, not just a speed-test peak. Include router, ISP, and power failure in the recovery plan.
  • VPS: confirm the instance can handle the actual workload and the plan’s outbound allowance covers the bitrate. A low-cost plan’s CPU, memory, or transfer figure alone does not establish suitability.
  • Either: arrange monitoring and a restart/watchdog path, protect the stream key, and decide who will respond to an alert. Neither a VM location nor a provider name guarantees uninterrupted service.

Make the comparison on equal terms

Decision factor Proxmox VM at home Cloud VPS
Recurring cash Measured whole-host energy plus incremental internet, backup power, maintenance, and other costs Plan price plus applicable transfer, storage, IP, tax, backup, and monitoring costs
Initial capital Existing spare capacity differs from buying a host for the stream; separate one-time cost or state amortization No home server purchase is implied, but setup and ongoing administration still take time
Data path Home upload and local network must sustain the stream Included outbound transfer and billing definitions must fit the bitrate and billing period
Failure domains Host, local power, router, and home ISP Provider account, region, network, and your own monitoring and restart logic
Operations Patch and maintain host and VM; monitor encoder and restore service Configure and maintain VM and encoder; monitor and restore service
Control and location Physical control, with exposure and dependencies on the home network Data-center location and provider control plane

Compare the same resolution, frame rate, codec, stream method, and operating period. Include the same monitoring and recovery expectations on both sides. If the VPS requires a larger CPU class for real-time encoding, compare that actual plan—not an entry-level price that cannot do the job. If the prerecorded file is passed through rather than transcoded, do not assume it needs the same compute as a live software-encoding workload.

When a managed cloud loop is another fit

If the channel runs prerecorded videos or a playlist, administering either a home host or a VPS is not the only option. StreamNeo is a vendor service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or playlists. It is not an independent cost or reliability benchmark; compare its current terms with your own requirements. Its published plan includes one always-on stream per slot, looping and playlists, up to 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The same features apply regardless of plan length; the billing period changes. Uploaded media is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding. It streams to YouTube only and is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload the recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the media from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps is one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. India customers can pay by UPI or card; cards are available worldwide. StreamNeo also offers daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly billing: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year. You can cancel any time; contact support for five or more slots. Try the first day at StreamNeo’s free trial.

Common cost and continuity mistakes

  • Using a VPS sticker price as the whole answer: add sufficient transfer, storage, IP, tax, monitoring, backup, and the time to operate it.
  • Using a PSU label to estimate electricity: measure whole-host draw during the real stream, then use your own tariff and billing period.
  • Ignoring bitrate: calculate continuous outbound volume from the intended video bitrate and account for audio, overhead, retries, and the provider’s units.
  • Assuming a tiny VM will encode anything: pass-through, filters, capture, and real-time software encoding impose different workloads; test the actual configuration.
  • Treating a restart as a full recovery plan: monitor stream health, protect credentials, and determine how the service resumes after a host, connection, or provider failure.
  • Assuming self-hosting is automatically reliable or cheaper: include failure recovery and time, not only electricity. Neither arrangement guarantees uptime.
