Brawl. That order reflects IGN’s editorial judgment, not a universal ranking. The Wii library spans motion-led adventures, platformers, fighting games, and role-playing games, so the best pick for you depends on what you want to play.
How to read IGN’s Wii games ranking
IGN’s list contains 25 games and was originally published in 2012, then updated in 2022. The ranking is a useful editorial guide, but it is not an objective measure or a consensus score. The available indexed text confirms the top eight positions; it does not establish the exact order of all 25 entries, so this article does not guess at a complete numbered list.
The games below are arranged by the confirmed IGN positions where available, followed by additional entries identified in the list without an asserted rank.
The confirmed top eight
-
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
IGN ranked it No. 1. Its description praises the way motion-based sword combat is central to play, as well as its dungeons and escalating story. Those are IGN’s critical judgments; the motion-control emphasis is also a practical consideration if you prefer traditional button controls.

-
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
At No. 3, this fighting game is noted by IGN for its combat depth and expanded roster. It is a natural choice to consider if local competitive play matters more to you than a solo story campaign.

-
Super Mario Galaxy
IGN placed this major Wii-era Mario release at No. 5 and praised the result. It offers another platforming option for readers deciding between the two Galaxy entries.

- Wii Sports Resort
- WarioWare: Smooth Moves
- Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
- Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
- Punch-Out!!
- Xenoblade Chronicles
The variety is part of what makes a single “best” answer difficult: the list ranges across motion-focused play, platforming, action, fighting, and role-playing games. For context, GamesRadar+ described the Wii as a motion-sensing console launched in 2006, with a library spanning family play, exploration, and platforming. That is editorial framing rather than a technical specification.
Choosing a Wii game that fits you
Use the game descriptions to narrow the list by the kind of play you want, rather than treating the rank as a personal recommendation.
- For motion-led combat: consider Skyward Sword, whose swordplay is tied to motion input.
- For platforming: compare the two Super Mario Galaxy games, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The latter also has optional four-player co-op.
- For fighting: Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the top-ranked option in IGN’s list.
- For a large adventure: the descriptions of Twilight Princess emphasize scale, weapons, and boss encounters.
- For a different genre: the included Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Xenoblade Chronicles show that the list extends beyond platformers and action games.
Playing these games today
For an original Wii release, look specifically for the Wii edition on a physical game disc and check the region, edition, and condition of any listing. Some Wii titles have later ports, but a port is a different platform and edition; confirm that the version you want is available for your system rather than assuming every Wii game has been re-released.
Nintendo says the Wii Shop Channel stopped accepting new purchases on January 30, 2019. Its support page said previously purchased content could be redownloaded “for the time being” while warning that this would eventually end, but it does not establish a precise current end date. Do not rely on the shop for a new digital purchase or assume redownload access is still available. Nintendo also discontinued WiiConnect24 services, including several channels and Wii friend data exchange, on June 27, 2013; that service change does not mean offline single-player or local multiplayer games ceased to work.
