For a single prerecorded video loop, you need disk space for one copy of the video—not a new copy for every play. Choose a Contabo VPS by adding the size of the video and every other file you will keep on the server, then leaving room for the operating system, streaming software, temporary files, logs, and routine updates. Stream bitrate affects network use, not the disk footprint of that one source file.
Calculate storage from the files you will keep
Start with the measured file size of the video you plan to loop. If it is 20 GB, one retained copy occupies about 20 GB whether it plays once or continuously. The loop does not make the source file grow.
Count each additional retained item separately: another copy, an alternate encode, overlays, graphics, music, or a backup stored on the same VPS. Then reserve free capacity for the OS, streaming software, logs, temporary working files, and normal system activity. Do not plan to use every nominal gigabyte for video. The required headroom varies with the server setup; there is no universal percentage established for every loop.
A simple sizing worksheet
- Video files: add the size of each copy and alternate encode.
- Other retained media: include overlays, graphics, and audio files.
- System and application space: allow for the OS, streaming software, logs, updates, and temporary files.
- Operational headroom: leave free space rather than filling the disk to its limit.
For example, retaining two copies of a 20 GB source means about 40 GB for those video files, before counting system files and free-space needs. This is a planning calculation, not a benchmark of a particular Contabo plan.

Which Contabo VPS family fits?
Contabo’s product documentation lists Storage VPS plans with 300 GB, 400 GB, 1 TB, 1.2 TB, and 1.4 TB SSD storage. It describes the family for storage-heavy workloads, including media assets such as video files. The listed network ports range from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. These are documented capacities, not a recommendation that every stream needs hundreds of gigabytes. Check the current plan details before ordering because specifications and terms can change. Contabo also documents Core VPS options with 100–600 GB SSD and Performance VPS options with 150–900 GB NVMe. Those are distinct plan families: Storage VPS prioritizes high capacity, while Performance VPS emphasizes NVMe and compute performance. Compare the available disk against your retained-file total, and consider CPU and RAM separately if you will encode video on the VPS. Storage VPS plans use shared vCPUs, and Contabo characterizes their storage as suited to high-capacity use rather than extreme I/O workloads. The provider’s documentation says changing storage plans requires reinstalling; back up your data and check its current upgrade procedure before making a change. Keep disk capacity separate from stream bitrate
Disk answers how much data remains stored on the VPS. Bitrate answers how much encoded data is sent over the network while the stream is live. For H.264 live ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are live output settings, not estimates of the source video’s disk size. The appropriate recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube live encoder settings.

At a constant 5–14 Mbps, the outbound stream sends approximately 2.25–6.3 GB per hour, or 54–151 GB per day, using decimal units. This is calculated from bitrate multiplied by time; it is not additional storage consumed by the loop file. It is useful when thinking about continuous network traffic, but does not establish what a specific Contabo plan will deliver in practice.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom and testing the stream while monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, says not to exceed four seconds, lists CBR for bitrate encoding, and recommends RTMPS. Choose a plan and validate the setup
- Measure the source file. Use the actual size of the video that will remain on the VPS.
- Add all retained data. Include duplicate copies, alternate encodes, overlays, music, graphics, and any backup stored on the server.
- Allow space beyond the media total. Account for the OS, software, updates, logs, temporary files, and routine system activity; avoid filling the disk completely.
- Compare Contabo families. If capacity is the main constraint, review Storage VPS. If compute or NVMe performance matters more, compare Core and Performance options and verify their current storage capacities.
- Plan the live output independently. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for YouTube, check the VPS network path and traffic terms, and test and monitor the stream.
