That lets Linux relaunch the encoder if its process exits and start it again after a VPS reboot. It does not repair a broken video source, network, VPS, or YouTube broadcast, and YouTube may not resume the same live event after every interruption. Test the recovery in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What automatic restart does—and what it cannot do
A service manager such as systemd supervises the encoder process. With a restart policy, systemd can launch that process again after an exit; enabling the service makes it start when Linux boots. This is narrower than rebooting the server.

Before configuring systemd
Confirm the VPS and Linux environment

Prove the encoder works interactively
Install and configure your chosen encoder, then run its intended command manually with a test source. Confirm that the source can be read and that YouTube receives a preview before placing the command under systemd. A supervisor cannot correct an invalid command or unavailable media file.
Get the correct YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. Prefer the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, and port 443; use the endpoint YouTube displays rather than assuming a host or path. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance
Set up automatic restart with systemd
- Choose a service account and working directory. Decide which Linux user should run the encoder and where it can access its media and configuration. Use a dedicated, least-privilege account where practical; make sure it can read the source and write any required logs or state.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts and world-readable files. Store it in a root-owned environment file or another access-controlled secret store readable only by the service account. Restrict permissions, for example with ownership and mode equivalent to root ownership and
0600. Do not paste a real key into a public tutorial, shared log, or shell command likely to remain in history. - Create a systemd unit for the encoder. The unit needs the correct executable and arguments, working directory, service user, access to the protected key, and a restart policy. For example, choose
Restart=on-failureto restart after an unsuccessful exit, orRestart=alwaysif it should also restart after a clean exit. Add a modest delay such asRestartSec=5to avoid a rapid failure loop. These are general Linux configuration choices, not a Contabo- or YouTube-published recipe; verify unit directives against your distribution and encoder. - Keep the encoder in the foreground. systemd must supervise the process it launches. Do not use a command mode that backgrounds or daemonizes the encoder unless the unit is specifically designed for that behavior.
- Reload systemd, enable the unit at boot, and start it. After saving the unit, reload the systemd manager configuration, enable the service so it starts at boot, then start it. Substitute your actual unit name; do not copy a guessed unit filename or encoder command.
- Inspect local logs and YouTube. Check the unit with
systemctl status your-unit-nameand review its journal withjournalctl -u your-unit-name. Then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. A successful local start is not proof of a healthy broadcast.
The exact FFmpeg command, unit file, package installation command, and file paths depend on the distribution, encoder, and media source. The official guidance cited here does not provide a verified Contabo-specific unit to copy unchanged.

Set encoder settings for a stable ingest
Restart supervision and encoding quality are separate concerns: a service may restart successfully while the encoder repeatedly fails to connect or YouTube receives an unhealthy feed. Use the current YouTube settings table for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity of your setup; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.
- YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and video codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, plus AAC or MP3 audio.
- Use constant bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose the bitrate recommendation in YouTube’s current table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure your VPS has enough upload capacity for the feed.
- For RTMPS, verify the protocol, endpoint, and port shown by YouTube; a wrong protocol, host, or port can cause connection errors.
Because YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, consult the live table rather than reusing a number detached from its conditions. Current YouTube encoder settings guidance

Test both crash recovery and boot recovery
- Use a test event and verify that the encoder is connected and YouTube shows a healthy preview.
- Stop the encoder process deliberately, without rebooting Linux. Confirm that systemd starts it again and check the journal for the exit and restart.
- Check Live Control Room after reconnection. The reviewed YouTube help pages do not promise that every interruption resumes the same broadcast, so verify the event state rather than assuming continuity.
- If reboot recovery is required, perform a planned VPS reboot during a safe test window. Confirm the enabled service starts after Linux returns, then check both logs and YouTube.
- Watch for repeated failures. Automatic retries can continue to fail when the key, URL, source file, permissions, or network configuration is wrong.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
