You can use OBS on a Contabo VPS to send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live, but the VPS must sustain the encoding and upload workload, and a continuously running encoder is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream. Provision the server, prepare and test your media, connect OBS using the current YouTube Studio stream details, then verify stream health and recovery before leaving it unattended. YouTube may not archive a live stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so plan separately if you need a recording.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
A VPS is a remote server that can stay powered on while your own computer is off. In this setup, OBS runs on the VPS, plays prerecorded media, and sends the resulting live video to YouTube. It is a self-managed approach: you are responsible for the operating system, OBS, media playback, network capacity, process recovery, and monitoring.
Contabo’s first-install guide explains how to provision a server through its Customer Control Panel and select an available image. That is provisioning guidance, not evidence that every VPS plan can encode a particular scene or maintain a specific stream. No Contabo-specific OBS benchmark, plan recommendation, sustained upload guarantee, or uptime figure is established here. Check the current plan and verify performance on the actual instance before relying on it.
For video-game channels, use only gameplay footage, music, commentary, and other material you have the rights to broadcast. A live encoder does not grant permission to rebroadcast game soundtracks, trailers, esports footage, or another creator’s videos. YouTube may interrupt a stream or take action over copyright or other policy violations. Review YouTube’s current rules and use the copyright safety checklist before making a playlist public.

1. Provision and prepare the VPS
Install an operating system
- Sign in to the Contabo Customer Control Panel and install the VPS using the provider’s available image options, following Contabo’s first-install instructions. Choose an operating system compatible with the OBS setup you intend to run.
- Save the server credentials securely. If the Linux installation flow offers SSH public-key access, use it rather than exposing a password in scripts or shared notes.
- Confirm that you can reach the instance and that its OS, display/session requirements, and available hardware support the OBS version and configuration you plan to use. The cited Contabo guidance does not validate a complete OBS-on-Contabo configuration.
OBS is a desktop application, so remote display and session behavior can matter, particularly on a server image without a graphical desktop. Resolve those requirements for the chosen OS and image before configuring a long-running broadcast; do not assume that logging out of a remote session leaves OBS running correctly.
Check encoding capacity before building the full playlist
Start with the resolution and frame rate of the actual source media. Higher output resolution or frame rate increases encoding and network demands; benchmark the scene on the VPS rather than inferring capacity from an advertised core count. OBS documents hardware-encoder requirements and performance troubleshooting, but does not establish that a Contabo VPS exposes a compatible GPU or driver. Do not select NVENC, Quick Sync, or another hardware path unless the actual instance exposes the required hardware and OBS recognizes it. If encoding overloads, reduce output resolution or scale sources as OBS recommends in its encoding performance troubleshooting guidance.
2. Put the media in order and verify the loop
Copy the playlist media to storage accessible to the OBS session. Build the playback sequence in the OBS setup you have chosen, and check that the selected media source repeats or advances as intended. OBS and the sources cited here do not establish one universal playlist configuration for every operating system or OBS version, so confirm the current controls in the installed version rather than relying on an unverified menu path.

- Play through the beginning, middle, and end of the sequence. Check that items appear in the intended order and that the transition from the final item back to the first does not leave a black screen or stall.
- Listen to the audio at normal playback level and inspect synchronization, clipping, silence, and unexpected gaps.
- Check that the OBS scene uses the intended video dimensions and that mixed-resolution content is framed correctly.
- Keep the media available for the full run. A moved, renamed, or inaccessible file can break playback even when the encoder remains connected.
For games, a long playlist still needs active rights clearance. Reused material or background music can trigger claims or interruptions even if it plays successfully in OBS. YouTube’s stream setup and channel policies, rather than the VPS provider, determine whether the broadcast is permitted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- Make sure live streaming is enabled for the YouTube channel and that the channel is eligible to go live. Follow the current YouTube Studio prompts if the feature is not yet available.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event you intend to use. Open its stream settings and obtain the current server address and stream key shown by YouTube.
- In OBS, open the stream configuration, select YouTube or the appropriate custom service option, and enter the current server and key. The precise labels can vary by OBS version and service integration; use the values displayed for the selected event in YouTube Studio.
- Prefer RTMPS where YouTube offers it. Start the OBS stream and check the YouTube preview and stream health before making the event public or leaving it unattended.
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance is the authority for encoder settings. The older OBS community walkthrough may help orient you, but do not treat it as more current than YouTube’s settings page.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in screenshots, public configuration files, logs you share, or command examples. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

4. Set output quality, bitrate, and keyframes
Match OBS output to both the source and what the VPS can encode continuously. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges are:
| Output mode | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These are YouTube Help recommendations; they are not a promise of image quality, a guarantee that the VPS can encode at that rate, or a measure of the server’s available bandwidth. For other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, consult the complete YouTube encoder settings table instead of extrapolating from these two examples.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose CBR (constant bitrate) as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not set it above 4 seconds.
- Use a compatible encoder and codec supported by the chosen OBS build and YouTube settings. Confirm whether a hardware encoder is actually available before depending on one; otherwise test software encoding on the instance.
- Start conservatively if you do not know the VPS capacity. If OBS reports encoding lag or YouTube stream health degrades, reduce resolution or frame rate and retest rather than assuming the network alone is responsible.
5. Confirm sustained upload capacity
YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of the stream. For example, a 10 Mbps total stream bitrate implies planning for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity under the same conditions, not merely seeing that result in a brief speed test. The 20% margin is YouTube’s recommendation in its streaming tips; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.

Check the actual VPS outbound path and monitor YouTube’s stream health while the intended scene is running. A point-in-time speed test cannot show whether capacity remains available through congestion, server load, or a long session. If the video and audio use separate tracks or otherwise produce a combined bitrate, budget for the total sent by OBS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Test monitoring, recovery, and archive behavior
Run a full operational test
Before relying on the channel as always on, run the intended playlist and inspect the OBS statistics, YouTube preview, stream health, audio, and loop boundary. Check that media remains accessible and that the OBS process remains active in the server session you will use. Test recovery deliberately in a controlled, private or unlisted event if possible; the cited sources do not verify a particular Contabo-specific watchdog, auto-start service, or reconnect configuration.
An OBS process can stop because of an encoder failure, server reboot, session loss, file problem, or network interruption. Plan how you will detect a stopped process and restart OBS or the VPS if needed. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but neither an always-on VPS nor an encoder setting alone guarantees 24/7 availability.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24/7 event therefore is not a dependable way to create a YouTube archive. If retention matters, record locally on the server and check that storage will not fill, or schedule shorter broadcasts and verify each archive afterward. See YouTube’s archive guidance for the qualification.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Practical next check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming stream | Stream key, server address, event selection, or channel live eligibility | Recheck the current event’s stream details in YouTube Studio, confirm the key was not mistyped or revoked, and verify the channel can go live. |
| YouTube stream health reports instability | Insufficient or inconsistent outbound capacity, bitrate, or server/network load | Check sustained VPS upload with headroom, inspect the total OBS bitrate, then lower the output bitrate or resolution and retest. |
| OBS reports encoding lag or the video stutters | CPU/GPU encoding capacity, source scaling, or output settings | Inspect OBS statistics; reduce output resolution or scale sources. Use a hardware encoder only if compatible hardware and drivers are actually available. |
| Playlist stops, repeats the wrong item, or goes black at the loop point | Media path, source configuration, file access, or playback behavior | Check that files remain accessible to the running OBS session and test the whole sequence, especially its final-to-first transition. |
| Stream is live but audio is silent or wrong | Scene audio routing, source levels, or media track | Monitor the actual YouTube preview and OBS audio meters with the intended media before leaving the stream running. |
| Broadcast ends after a server or session interruption | Process persistence, reboot behavior, or recovery automation | Confirm how OBS starts after login or reboot on the selected OS and test recovery. The cited setup sources do not validate a one-size-fits-all Contabo auto-restart procedure. |
| No YouTube archive appears after a very long event | Continuous stream duration | Do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream that exceeds 12 hours; use local recording or shorter scheduled events. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
A Contabo VPS has a provider-specific cost, but the available guidance does not establish a current price, plan, regional capacity, included transfer allowance, or sustained upload commitment suitable for this exact OBS workload. Check Contabo’s current terms and the chosen instance details directly before estimating the total. Include storage for media and any local recordings, plus the time needed to monitor and maintain the server.
Running OBS yourself provides direct control over scenes and settings, but you also own the reliability work: OS and application maintenance, file availability, capacity testing, process recovery, and archive planning. A third-party guide describes FFmpeg looping as another implementation approach, but that does not validate an FFmpeg or OBS procedure on a particular Contabo instance.
