The practical limit depends on your stream settings, whether the VPS transcodes video, its shared CPU and network capacity, and YouTube’s own account limits. Measure your actual workload before scaling.
What sets the limit: YouTube and the VPS
YouTube’s concurrent-stream caps
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance states that a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also sets a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key; both caps apply. These are platform limits, not a recommendation for how many streams one server can safely run. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and limits and the channel’s Live Control Room before configuring multiple outputs.
Contabo’s shared resources and network
Contabo describes its VPS instances as KVM-based virtual servers with shared vCPUs and fixed RAM. Its Core, Performance and Storage VPS families differ in CPU generation, storage and port speed; even a newer CPU family does not make shared vCPUs dedicated cores. For example, the Core VPS listings described in Contabo’s product documentation ranged from four to 18 vCPUs and port speeds from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. Plans can change, so check the current Contabo VPS documentation before buying.
Contabo says VPS products have no default bandwidth limit, but its fair-use terms allow throttling in exceptional high-usage or disruptive cases, and port speeds vary by product. “Unlimited traffic” is not a guaranteed throughput or uptime commitment. Review Contabo’s bandwidth and traffic guidance alongside the port speed for the specific plan.

Estimate capacity from your actual streams
Do not choose a VPS by dividing its advertised vCPU count by an assumed number of channels. First identify what each output requires. Aggregate outbound bitrate determines the steady network load; encoding or transcoding adds CPU work, while forwarding an already encoded source has a different workload. Neither Contabo nor YouTube publishes a guaranteed number of simultaneous channels for a given VPS.
Record each stream’s settings
- Resolution and frame rate.
- Video codec and target video bitrate.
- Audio bitrate.
- Whether the VPS encodes or transcodes the source, or forwards/remuxes media that is already encoded.
- The number of simultaneous outputs and whether they use separate source files or processes.
Compare demand with plan capacity
- Add the video and audio output bitrates for every simultaneous stream to estimate steady outbound demand.
- Allow operational headroom for protocol overhead, bursts, retries and other server traffic; do not plan to operate continuously at the port’s nominal maximum.
- Compare the resulting demand with the selected plan’s published port speed and Contabo’s fair-use terms.
- Run the exact workload and monitor CPU, memory, network use and disk use. Begin with one stream, then increase concurrency gradually, especially if transcoding.
- Test for long enough to expose unattended-operation issues such as reconnect failures, growing logs, exhausted storage or processes that stop without restarting.
This is a measurement-based sizing method, not a vendor-validated per-stream guarantee. Shared CPU performance can vary, so a brief successful launch is not proof of stable 24/7 operation.

Configure each YouTube output securely
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a Live server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Studio interface and settings. Keep each key secret: do not expose it in screenshots, shell history, logs or public repositories. If a key is compromised, reset it through YouTube Studio.
- Verify each channel and confirm that it can live stream under YouTube’s eligibility rules.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the intended live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key into the matching encoder process. Keep a controlled record mapping each process to its intended channel and output.
- Do not assume one key can be used for unlimited fan-out. YouTube’s stated limit is three active streams per key, alongside the 10-active-streams-per-channel cap; check the current account interface for applicable options and limits.
- Start with one output, confirm it appears correctly in Live Control Room, then test additional outputs while monitoring server load and reconnect behavior.
Content rights and monetization are separate from server capacity
A technically stable stream is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube applies monetization policies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification calls the former repetitious-content rule “inauthentic content” and covers repetitive or mass-produced material. Content with little variation, minimal commentary or little educational value may be ineligible; review can consider the channel’s videos, titles, descriptions and overall content. A 24/7 loop, multiple channels or automation does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program eligibility. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Before streaming, clear rights for music, video, images and other material for both the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms require live content to comply with Community Guidelines and represent that creators hold the necessary rights to use the content on Google services, including music licensing rights, and comply with applicable laws.
Keep the VPS workload recoverable
A 24/7 setup needs more than a process that starts once. Validate that source files remain accessible, disk space is sufficient, logs do not grow without limit, and the encoder restarts or reconnects as intended. Test YouTube disconnects and server-side failures with the actual process supervision and recovery configuration you plan to use. Contabo’s server portfolio overview can help distinguish product families, but it does not certify a stream count or unattended streaming setup.
