To filter words from Streamlabs live alerts, open Streaming essentials > Alert Box, then use the general settings to enable the profanity filter and add custom words or phrases. If you want to review messages individually, turn on alert moderation so alerts wait for approval before appearing.
Set up automatic word filtering

Sign in to Streamlabs and open Streaming essentials > Alert Box.

In the Alert Box general settings, enable the profanity filter. Add words or phrases to the custom bad-word list; Streamlabs describes using its standard list, a custom list, or both. See Streamlabs’ alert setup guide and setup instructions.

Choose what should happen when a match is found. Depending on the available setting, Streamlabs can censor matching words or disable alerts containing bad words. Censoring preserves the alert with the matched text obscured; disabling it can hide the whole alert, including a legitimate follow or subscription.

Save your settings before leaving the page. Preview or test the alert configuration in the dashboard before relying on it during a live stream.
Choose between filtering and manual approval

Streamlabs documents both filtering and holding alerts for approval in its current alert guide. Its dedicated profanity-filter instructions, last updated April 25, 2025, also discuss applying settings to Recent Events. Dashboard labels and scope can change, so check the current controls rather than assuming the same filter applies everywhere.

Alert filters are not chat filters
Filtering text in an alert overlay is separate from moderating messages in platform chat. YouTube Studio has a blocked-word list for live chat, and Twitch documents AutoMod and permitted or blocked terms for chat. Those settings address chat moderation; they do not necessarily change text displayed by a third-party alert overlay. For alert text, configure the alert provider’s own filter. See YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance and Twitch’s channel moderation instructions.
Common problems and fixes

The unwanted word still appears: Confirm the custom word or phrase is in the Alert Box settings, the filter is enabled, and your changes were saved. Preview the alert again. If the text comes from chat rather than an alert event, adjust chat moderation separately.

A legitimate alert disappears: Check whether the selected behavior disables the entire alert when a match is found. Switch to censoring, if available, or remove an overbroad custom term. Streamlabs cautions that banned words can also occur as part of a normal message.

You want context-sensitive decisions: Use alert moderation and have a moderator review held alerts. Automatic word lists match terms; manual approval gives a person a chance to assess the message before display.

The setting does not seem to cover Recent Events or another widget: Verify the current dashboard’s scope. Older Streamlabs instructions mention Recent Events, but the relevant controls and labels may vary over time.
