Run FFmpeg as a systemd service with a restart policy and a delay so systemd can relaunch the process after a covered failure. For some output errors, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can instead attempt recovery while the process stays alive. These are separate recovery layers: neither guarantees that YouTube will restore the same live event or continue at the intended point in your video. Check the stream in YouTube Studio after any recovery.

Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure

Systemd acts when the FFmpeg service process exits and its restart policy calls for another start. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can try to recover from some output failures without exiting. Neither layer fixes every cause of interruption, such as unavailable media, invalid credentials, or a persistent network fault.

Approach Trigger What it does What to verify
systemd restart policy FFmpeg exits in a way covered by the configured policy Starts the service process again, subject to the unit’s restart settings and any start-rate limits Whether FFmpeg starts successfully, what input position it resumes from, and whether YouTube shows the intended live event
FFmpeg FIFO recovery A failure that the FIFO muxer is configured to attempt to recover from Tries to recover output while FFmpeg remains running Whether recovery succeeds and whether queue behavior drops content or blocks processing

A systemd restart may replay or skip media depending on the input command and how it handles input position. A successful local restart is not proof that the YouTube broadcast has resumed as intended.

Inspect the service before changing it

  1. Find the unit name you use for FFmpeg, then inspect its current state with sudo systemctl status YOUR_SERVICE.service. Replace YOUR_SERVICE.service with the actual unit name.

  2. Read recent service logs with sudo journalctl -u YOUR_SERVICE.service -n 100 --no-pager. Look for FFmpeg’s final error and whether systemd reports repeated starts or a rate limit.

  3. Determine whether FFmpeg exited or is still running. A restart policy cannot help with an FFmpeg process that remains alive but is stuck; that requires diagnosing the process, input, output, or network behavior.

  4. Check that the input file or playlist is present and readable by the service account. Confirm the output endpoint and stream key are correct without printing or sharing the secret.

Configure a systemd restart policy

The following is an adaptable unit-file example, not a tested Contabo configuration. Replace the paths, service account, FFmpeg arguments, and unit name with values appropriate to your setup. Before relying on a directive or start-limit behavior, check the installed systemd version and its local manual; accepted settings and behavior can differ by release.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_USER
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/media
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg YOUR_EXISTING_FFMPEG_ARGUMENTS
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Choose the restart behavior deliberately

  • Restart=on-failure is a common choice when abnormal exits should be retried but an intentional clean stop should remain stopped.
  • Restart=always also restarts after clean exits. Use it only if restarting after an intentional or successful exit is what you want.
  • RestartSec=5 adds a delay before a restart in this example. A delay and suitable start-rate limits help avoid a tight restart loop when the underlying fault persists.

Confirm the supported directives and any start-limit settings with the manual for the systemd version installed on your VPS. Do not copy an unfamiliar rate-limit directive without checking that version’s documentation.

Optional: let FFmpeg FIFO attempt output recovery

FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer as a way to attempt recovery from some output failures while the process remains alive. Its options and behavior depend on the FFmpeg build; check that build’s documentation or run ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo before changing your output command.

  • attempt_recovery enables recovery attempts.
  • recovery_wait_time sets the wait between attempts. FFmpeg’s documented default is 5 seconds; that is a default, not a recommendation for every stream.
  • max_recovery_attempts can limit retries. The documented default is zero, meaning unlimited attempts.
  • recover_any_error broadens which errors are eligible. FFmpeg says some errors treated as usually permanent are not attempted by default; a broader policy still cannot fix persistent causes such as invalid credentials or missing input.
  • The documented FIFO queue default is 60 packets. If the queue overflows, dropping packets can preserve real-time processing but omit stream content; blocking avoids dropping packets but can hold up the encoder.

These controls are not interchangeable with systemd restarts: FIFO recovery may keep the process alive, while systemd acts after the process exits. Choose based on the errors shown in the logs and verify the resulting broadcast in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshoot by failure layer

Symptom What to check Next action
FFmpeg exits repeatedly Service status and the final FFmpeg error in the journal Fix the reported cause, such as a missing input or invalid output configuration; repeated restarts alone will not clear a persistent fault.
FFmpeg stays running, but output stops Whether the process is waiting, reporting output errors, or accumulating FIFO queue issues Review FIFO recovery and queue behavior for your build; systemd will not restart a process that has not exited.
Input or media errors appear File path, permissions for the service account, playlist entries, and media availability Restore a readable input and restart the service if it exited.
Connection errors appear Outbound route, host OS firewall, and the endpoint and stream key in the service configuration Correct the network or configuration issue without exposing the stream key in logs or support requests.
The process recovers, but YouTube does not show the expected live state The event and ingest state in YouTube Studio Confirm the broadcast state there; local process recovery does not establish that the same event resumed or that playback continuity was preserved.
Contabo Firewall is enabled Its rules separately from the operating system’s firewall rules Contabo describes its network-level firewall as blocking inbound traffic by default when assigned, while leaving outbound traffic unrestricted. For a stream pushed from FFmpeg to YouTube, do not assume that this inbound default blocks publishing; investigate the actual error and host networking.

Contabo’s managed Firewall and the server’s OS-level firewall are separate controls. Contabo says default port access is unrestricted when its Firewall is not enabled, and administrators control OS-level networking and firewall settings. Diagnose the observed failure rather than changing inbound rules without evidence.

When a server reboot is—and is not—the right response

A single FFmpeg service failure normally calls for inspecting or restarting that service, not rebooting the whole VPS. Contabo’s reboot help page recommends rebooting within the operating system when it remains accessible; a panel reboot shuts down and restarts the server. Check the current panel workflow before using it, since the published help-page URL includes a draft marker.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop 24/7, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining FFmpeg and a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plan details. Start the free first day.
