A Contabo VPS reboot stops the encoder process running on that server, so you cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback through the restart. To recover automatically, arrange for the encoder to start when the operating system boots and to restart if it fails, then verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. For a planned reboot, use the operating system when it is reachable; Contabo cautions that a sudden shutdown can cause problems and should be a last resort.
What a reboot can—and cannot—protect against
A VPS reboot takes the host and its running processes down temporarily. A stream can therefore be interrupted even if the VPS comes back successfully. The practical objective is automatic recovery and a shorter interruption, not zero downtime: Contabo’s VPS controls and YouTube’s diagnostics do not guarantee that a particular encoder will reconnect or that viewers will see no gap.
Recovery has two separate parts: the operating system must boot, and the encoder must launch with access to its media, credentials, and network. A process that was started manually in a terminal may not return after a reboot. YouTube’s receipt of the stream must then be checked separately.
Choose the safer reboot method
When the VPS operating system is reachable
Use the operating system’s normal reboot process when possible. Contabo recommends considering an in-OS reboot if the server remains accessible. This lets the guest operating system shut down in an orderly way.

When the operating system is not reachable
Contabo’s Control Panel offers server controls including restart. A panel-level reboot shuts down and restarts the VPS; it is not the same as asking a responsive guest operating system to reboot gracefully. Contabo warns that suddenly shutting down the server can cause problems and says to use that approach only as a last resort. See Contabo’s reboot guidance.
Neither method keeps the encoder running during the restart. The difference is how the server is stopped, not whether the stream is guaranteed to continue.

Make the encoder recover after a reboot
- Identify your setup. Record the VPS operating system and version, the encoder or streaming application, how it is launched, where its media files are stored, and which YouTube stream key it uses. The right boot and restart configuration depends on those details.
- Run the encoder under an operating-system service manager. Configure the appropriate service for your distribution so the encoder starts after boot and is restarted after an unexpected process exit. The exact service definition and restart policy vary by operating system and encoder; do not paste a generic unit or command without checking that it matches both.
- Check boot-time dependencies. Confirm that the service can read the source media, access any required configuration and credentials, and reach the network when it starts. A service can be active while the encoder fails to open its input or connect to YouTube.
- Test the full sequence. In a safe test window, reboot the VPS using the planned method. Confirm that the operating system returns, the encoder starts without a manual login, and YouTube receives the stream. A successful process launch alone does not establish that the broadcast is healthy.
Contabo documents cloud-init user-data scripts that can run at boot, but the available VPS documentation does not establish a distribution-specific service-manager recipe. How do I keep my YouTube stream running after a VPS reboot?
You cannot keep the same encoder process running through a VPS reboot. You can reduce manual recovery by arranging for the process to start at operating-system boot and retry after process failure, then checking the stream on YouTube. Whether it reconnects successfully depends on the encoder and broadcast configuration. Test with your actual setup before relying on it for an important broadcast.

Verify recovery in both places
Confirm the VPS and encoder
- Check that the VPS has finished booting and is reachable.
- Check that the encoder process or service is running, not merely that the server is online.
- Review the encoder’s own status or logs for input-file, credential, and connection errors.
- If the process is running but the stream has not returned, check its ingestion configuration and whether it is set up to use a backup address.
Confirm YouTube is receiving video
YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes stream status and health information, along with a primary ingestion address and an optional backup address. Those fields can help establish whether YouTube is receiving video; their availability does not prove that the encoder will reconnect automatically. The backup address is useful only if your encoder and broadcast have been configured to use it. See the YouTube LiveStreams reference.
Check health after the encoder returns rather than assuming that an online VPS means a healthy broadcast. YouTube’s videoIngestionStarved status means it is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. Consult YouTube’s stream health issue descriptions to interpret reported problems.

Recovery aids are not continuity measures
Contabo documents VPS panel controls such as start, stop, and restart, as well as snapshots and a rescue system. A snapshot can help with recovery, and rescue access can help you reach and repair a server. Neither prevents the encoder from stopping during a reboot or keeps a broadcast uninterrupted.
