There is no evidence-backed universal winner. Contabo advertises VPS plans with plan-specific port speeds and traffic subject to fair use; AWS Lightsail sells fixed-price bundles with transfer allowances that vary by bundle and AWS Region. Choose by calculating your stream’s sustained bitrate, monthly data use, required headroom, and total cost for the exact plan and region—not by treating a port speed or “unlimited” traffic label as a guarantee.
Start with the actual streaming workload
Before comparing VPS plans, decide what the server will do. A VPS can relay a pre-encoded video stream, or it can encode video itself; the latter requires more CPU capacity. The cited provider information does not establish a like-for-like encoding benchmark, so advertised vCPU counts alone cannot show which provider will encode a particular workload better.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are ranges for those specific settings, not universal bitrates for every resolution, frame rate, or codec. Use YouTube’s [encoder settings guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) to choose the values for your stream.
Estimate monthly outbound data
For a continuous stream at a constant video bitrate, a useful decimal estimate is Mbps × 0.45 GB per hour, or Mbps × 324 GB for 30 days. This arithmetic estimate excludes extra use from audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and bitrate variation. For example, 10 Mbps running continuously for 30 days is roughly 3.24 TB before those additions.

Use the stream’s actual operating hours if it will not run continuously. For a variable-bitrate stream, use a realistic average rather than its peak. Compare the resulting estimate with Lightsail’s allowance for your selected region, or read Contabo’s applicable fair-use terms; neither comparison guarantees real-world delivery.
Allow network headroom
YouTube recommends 20% network headroom above the stream bitrate and emphasizes that the available upload capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate. Apply that headroom to the sustained outbound capacity you need from the VPS. Include any backup feed only if you plan to send one. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Contabo: port speed and fair-use terms
Contabo’s product documentation lists Core VPS configurations with shared vCPU cores, RAM, storage, port speed, and traffic terms. As one example, its Cloud VPS 8 listing specifies 8 vCPUs, 24 GB RAM, 300 GB SSD storage, and a 600 Mbit/s port; traffic is described as unlimited subject to fair use. These are advertised plan details, not measured encoding performance or a promise of uninterrupted streaming. Review the Contabo VPS documentation and the applicable fair-use language for the plan you select.
Contabo’s pricing page lists Core VPS 4 at $5.28/month, Core VPS 6 at $7.20/month, and Core VPS 8 at $13.44/month, each displayed for a 24-month term. The page also lists plan-specific port speeds and “Unlimited Traffic” with a fair-use caveat. Confirm current labels, prices, and contract terms on Contabo’s pricing page before committing; a 24-month displayed rate should not be read as a month-to-month price.

AWS Lightsail: bundle allowance and Region
Lightsail’s bundle price is hourly, up to a maximum monthly plan cost, and includes a transfer allowance that depends on the selected bundle and AWS Region. AWS’s bundle table gives these examples for Linux bundles with public IPv4: 1 GB at $7/month with 2 TB transfer, and 4 GB at $24/month with 4 TB transfer. These are examples from AWS’s published table, not region-independent quotations. Check the current Lightsail pricing page for the target Region, bundle, and any charges beyond the included transfer; a precise regional overage amount is not established here.
Choose a plan with a repeatable calculation
- Set the stream specification. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s encoder guidance. Do not size a plan from resolution alone.
- Calculate expected transfer. Multiply the average bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 GB per hour, then by the planned operating hours. For a 30-day nonstop schedule, the shorthand is Mbps × 324 GB, before audio and overhead.
- Add network headroom. Compare the required sustained outbound capacity, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, with the provider’s applicable network information. A listed port speed is not proof that the full rate will be available continuously.
- For Lightsail, select the Region and bundle first. Compare your estimate with that bundle’s regional transfer allowance and determine applicable excess-transfer charges from AWS before calculating the total.
- For Contabo, select a plan and read its terms. Compare its published port speed with your headroom-adjusted requirement, and account for fair-use terms. Do not treat “unlimited” as a no-conditions traffic guarantee.
- Include operational costs. Add any monitoring, backup, or recovery tools your implementation actually needs. A VPS price alone does not include a tested recovery plan.
- Test before relying on it. Send a test stream, check YouTube’s stream health, and verify how your encoder or relay behaves after a network interruption. YouTube advises testing and monitoring streams in its encoder guidance.
Configure YouTube ingest and protect the stream key
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Your encoder or relay needs the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the software running on the VPS, and treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script, or share it with people who do not need access. A 24/7 schedule also affects what you should expect from YouTube archives: YouTube’s cited setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full. Check YouTube’s current behavior and plan a separate recording or archive workflow if retaining the entire programme matters.

They do not provide an apples-to-apples benchmark for encoding speed, sustained throughput, packet loss, uptime, or YouTube ingest performance. That makes an end-to-end test important: validate the chosen video settings and outbound capacity, watch YouTube’s health indicators, and observe what happens when the connection drops.
