In OBS, a VLC Video source can play a list of files; use separate genre lists or scenes and rehearse the switch before relying on it live. YouTube receives the encoder’s output, not your genre schedule, and neither YouTube nor OBS documentation promises that every live playlist edit will be seamless.
How the stream and playlist fit together
Think of the broadcast as two separate layers. Your encoder sends audio and video to YouTube using YouTube’s server URL and a stream key. The playlist or media source inside the encoder decides what that output contains. YouTube Help’s setup instructions describe starting the stream with the encoder and ending it by stopping the content sent from the encoder. Google’s Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes the stream transmission from its associated broadcast. So, for a genre change, leave the YouTube output connected and change the upstream media selection.
This is not a YouTube feature that schedules genres. Genre names, rotation times, and the rule for choosing the next list are decisions you implement in OBS or another media-control workflow.
Choose a way to organize genre playlists in OBS
One VLC Video source with a playlist
OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist-capable source. It can loop a playlist or shuffle it, and VLC must be installed for the source to work. This is a straightforward choice when you want a list of files that plays in sequence or at random. Check the list and playback behavior in your installed OBS version before putting it on a public 24/7 broadcast.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate scenes or sources for each genre
You can organize distinct genre selections as separate OBS scenes or sources, then select the one you want while the encoder remains connected. This can make manual switching more legible when you have a small number of fixed categories. OBS documentation describes source and visibility controls, but it does not establish universal behavior for editing an active playlist, resetting a source, or automating timed genre changes. Validate the exact arrangement you intend to use.
Pick based on how you will operate it
- Track management: consider how easily you can add, remove, or replace files in each genre list.
- Rotation method: decide whether a person will switch genres or whether a separate automation workflow is needed.
- Playback order: choose sequential playback, shuffle, or a scene/source arrangement that suits the schedule.
- End-of-file and visibility behavior: test what viewers see when a file ends or a source is hidden.
- Updates and monitoring: rehearse changes to lists and keep an operator able to check the outgoing picture and sound.
Set up the feed and switch genres while live
- Prepare the genre media. Make a separate list for each genre, or prepare the OBS scenes and sources you will switch among. Keep a fallback scene or media item ready as an operational precaution.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, select or create a stream key and note YouTube’s server URL. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
- Configure OBS’s YouTube connection. Enter the server URL and stream key in the streaming settings for your chosen YouTube connection. Keep the key private; it grants access to send a feed to that stream.
- Set up the media source. Add a VLC Video source for a file list, configure loop or shuffle if wanted, and confirm VLC is installed. Alternatively, prepare separate scenes or sources for the genre choices.
- Start the encoder and check the feed. Start streaming from OBS, then verify the outgoing preview and YouTube stream health before treating the broadcast as live.
- Change the media selection, not the YouTube output. While the encoder is streaming, select the next genre’s scene/source or make the planned playlist change. Leave the encoder’s YouTube output running. Check picture and audio after the change.
- Rehearse the exact transition privately or unlisted. Test the file endings, source visibility, list updates, and switch timing in the same OBS setup you plan to use. The documentation does not promise that a live edit preserves the playback cursor or produces a gapless transition.
Continuity, latency, and archive limits
A connected stream is not a guarantee of a seamless genre change
Keeping the encoder session active is the relevant way to avoid stopping and restarting the YouTube output. It does not guarantee that a source change has no black frame, audio gap, reset, or other visible transition. OBS and YouTube documentation do not certify every playlist edit, plug-in, or source-reset behavior. Test your actual files and controls.

Do not confuse HLS ingestion with a genre playlist
YouTube’s HLS documentation describes how live segments are delivered to YouTube, including a rolling ingestion playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. It also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. That protocol-level playlist is not a viewer-facing media scheduler and does not rotate your genres.
Plan around long-running archives
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous 24/7 schedule, decide separately how you will manage the broadcast and any shorter programs you want archived; the cited guidance does not establish a universal archive workflow for every long-running channel.

Troubleshooting a genre switch
- The YouTube stream ends when you change genre: check whether you stopped the encoder or its streaming output rather than only changing the media source. Start the encoder feed again if needed, then rehearse changing sources without stopping it.
- The VLC playlist source is unavailable: verify that VLC is installed and that OBS recognizes the VLC Video source.
- The picture or sound changes unexpectedly: test the specific file, source, and transition in a private or unlisted rehearsal. The cited documentation does not certify arbitrary file compatibility, audio normalization, or seamless transitions.
- A source change resets playback or creates a gap: do not assume an edit preserves the playback position. Test the exact operation and choose a transition workflow that behaves acceptably in your installation.
- The stream is connected but showing the wrong genre: verify the active scene/source and playlist selection in OBS, then check the outgoing preview rather than relying only on the playlist’s contents.
- A long broadcast is not archived as expected: check YouTube’s archive and broadcast management for your stream; automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not as a universal rule for longer continuous schedules.
