You can make a YouTube stream more resilient to a power cut, but no single OBS or YouTube setting guarantees that the same public broadcast will resume automatically. For a local camera or production, power and internet must return, the computer and encoder must restart, and YouTube must still have an active broadcast that can accept the feed. For prerecorded video, a cloud service can keep the stream independent of your home computer and power supply.
What has to recover after a power cut
A YouTube stream depends on several separate pieces. YouTube’s stream URL and stream key connect an encoder to YouTube; they do not power on a computer or restore a network connection. OBS automatic reconnect can help when OBS is still running and its outgoing connection drops, but it cannot boot a computer that lost power. And even if the encoder reconnects, the YouTube broadcast may have ended or may not be public.
- Power: the computer, network equipment, and any required source must have power or restart after AC returns.
- Network: the router or modem and internet connection must recover.
- Encoder and source: OBS or a hardware encoder must run again, find the camera or other source, and send to the intended YouTube stream.
- YouTube event: the broadcast must still be able to accept the feed and be live to viewers.
Plan for each layer rather than treating an OBS “streaming” indicator as proof that viewers can watch.
Set up the local computer and YouTube event
1. Prepare the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the intended stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in OBS or your hardware encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Review the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. These controls let the encoder start or stop a broadcast; they do not provide backup power or reboot an encoder. If you reuse stream settings, check these options on the new stream as well.
2. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Automatically Reconnect and enable reconnect for output interruptions. This community-recommended setting is useful when OBS remains open and the network feed drops. It is not a power-restoration feature: if the PC shuts down, OBS cannot reconnect until the computer and OBS are running again.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Arrange for the computer to restart
Some computers or motherboards offer a firmware option to power on after AC is restored. Check the manual for your exact model; menu names and availability vary, and no particular model or setting can be assumed. If you configure automatic login or startup applications so OBS launches after a reboot, weigh that convenience against the security of leaving an account signed in. Verify that the encoder starts the right scene or source and uses the intended stream key.
4. Protect against short outages with a UPS
A UPS can bridge a short outage only if it powers every necessary device, including the computer and the network equipment needed to reach YouTube, for long enough. Estimate their combined power draw and the runtime you need before choosing a unit. There is no universal capacity recommendation: runtime depends on the actual load and UPS. A UPS may not solve a longer outage, an internet-provider failure, or a YouTube event that has ended.

Understand scheduled-broadcast and event behavior
A scheduled YouTube broadcast has an event state separate from the encoder connection. With auto-start enabled, a scheduled broadcast can go live when streaming begins; with auto-stop enabled, it can end when streaming stops. Those settings affect the event, not the computer’s ability to recover. OBS community guidance also notes that a broadcast may eventually end if no stream is received for multiple hours.
After a long interruption, check the current event in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming that an encoder reconnect restored the public stream. If it has ended or is not live, use the current Live Control Room controls to select, create, or start the appropriate event. YouTube’s encoder setup and the viewer-facing broadcast controls are distinct parts of the workflow.

Check settings and test stream quality before relying on it
Choose a quality that your actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are general recommendations, not India-specific guarantees of available bandwidth. Run an upload-speed test, then test with representative motion and audio while monitoring stream health. A connection that works for a short test may still be unsuitable for continuous streaming if its capacity varies.
Test the recovery chain deliberately before depending on it. Reboot the computer, interrupt the network, and—only if safe—test a brief power interruption. For each test, confirm whether the source and encoder return, whether the same YouTube event remains active, and whether the public watch page is live. No measured recovery time is established here; your hardware, network, and event settings determine the result.

What to check when the stream does not return
| Symptom | Likely point of failure | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PC is off after power returns | Automatic power-on after AC restoration is unavailable, disabled, or not working as expected | Consult the exact computer or motherboard manual. Confirm that the computer boots after AC returns before relying on OBS startup. |
| PC is on, but OBS is not streaming | OBS did not launch, the source is unavailable, or the encoder output was not restored | Open OBS, check that the intended scene and camera/source are available, and verify the stream URL and key. |
| OBS says it is streaming, but viewers cannot watch | The YouTube broadcast may not be active or public | Check stream health and event status in YouTube Live Control Room, then open the public watch page from a separate device or browser session. |
| OBS does not recover after a brief internet interruption | OBS may not be running, reconnect may not be enabled, or the network path may still be down | Check Settings > Advanced > Automatically Reconnect, then confirm the router/modem and internet connection have returned. |
| The encoder reconnects but the event has ended | The broadcast’s event state may have ended during the outage | Inspect the event in Live Control Room and use its current controls to start or select the appropriate broadcast. |
| The stream drops again during a power interruption | The UPS may not cover all required devices or may not have enough runtime for the load | Reassess the combined equipment load and required runtime; do not assume the computer alone is the full load. |
Choose an approach based on what you are streaming
The right design depends on whether the content is a live camera/production or prerecorded video, how long an outage might last, and which devices need to remain powered.
| Approach | Best fit | What must recover or remain available | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud streaming from uploaded prerecorded video | A YouTube 24/7 stream made from uploaded recordings or a playlist | The cloud service and internet connection | It plays uploaded videos; it is not a way to recover a local camera or on-site production. |
| Local PC with OBS automatic reconnect | Local camera, scenes, or production that needs on-site control | Computer, source, network, and an active YouTube event | Reconnect does not boot an unpowered PC or guarantee the event is still live. |
| Local PC plus UPS | Short power dips where local production must stay running | UPS must carry the encoder and network load for the outage duration | Battery runtime is limited and depends on equipment load. |
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded content. That is a different setup from restoring a live camera or production at a home or venue after a site power failure.

Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube content, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from uploaded videos in the cloud rather than relying on your home computer staying on. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, and UPI works for customers in India.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a scheduled YouTube stream automatically restart after a long outage?
Not necessarily. Auto-start can start a scheduled event when an encoder begins sending, but the event may have ended during a lengthy interruption; check Live Control Room.
Can a UPS keep a stream online during any power cut?
No. It only helps while its available runtime can support all the equipment required for the stream.
Can a cloud stream restore a live camera feed at home?
No. The cloud option described here is for uploaded prerecorded videos, not a live camera or on-site production.
