OBS Studio is the best-supported Linux starting point for sending prerecorded video to YouTube Live. Its Media Source can play a local file on a loop, and OBS can send that feed to a YouTube event using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. But looping a file is only one part of automation: scheduling an event, starting the encoder, monitoring the broadcast, and recovering from interruptions are separate tasks.
Which option fits your kind of automation?
| Option | What it is suited to | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio on Linux | Local graphical control of scenes and prerecorded media, including looping a file. | A looped source does not establish unattended startup or automatic recovery. |
| StreamNeo | #1 for keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running: it runs in the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not Linux desktop software and does not stream camera footage. See StreamNeo. |
| Gyre | YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. | This listing does not establish Linux desktop support, performance comparisons, or pricing. |
Choose OBS when you want to build and operate the broadcast from a Linux machine. Choose a cloud service when the requirement is continuous operation without leaving a home computer running. YouTube’s official documentation supports these distinctions, but does not establish a complete ranking of Linux automation tools.
What “automating” a prerecorded stream actually involves
1. Repeat the video
OBS’s Media Source loads a local media file into a scene and includes a Loop property. This automates playback repetition while OBS is running; it does not, by itself, schedule or start a YouTube event.
2. Schedule the YouTube event
A scheduled event creates an upcoming stream page and can provide reminders. You still need to configure the encoder feed. YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Start and monitor the encoder
The encoder must send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube recommends previewing the incoming feed in Live Control Room and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Test the actual start and end sequence on your setup rather than assuming the loop handles the whole broadcast.
4. Keep it running through interruptions
Neither the documented OBS loop control nor a scheduled event proves that a Linux desktop session will restart after a crash, recover a dropped connection, or run indefinitely without oversight. If you need those behaviors, test them explicitly or use a service designed to keep the stream running in the cloud.

Set up OBS on Linux and send a prerecorded file to YouTube
- Enable live streaming and schedule an event. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if needed, then create or schedule a stream. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. Locate the event’s encoder details in Live Control Room.
- Install OBS using a suitable Linux distribution route. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and documents an Ubuntu PPA/package route. Packages outside the officially supported builds may be maintained by the community; check the source and compatibility for your distribution.
- Create a scene and add the video. In OBS, add a Media Source to a scene, select the local recording, and enable Loop if it should repeat. OBS documents Media Source support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM video files.
- Configure YouTube as the stream destination. In OBS’s streaming settings, select the YouTube service preset if available, or enter the server URL and stream key shown for the event in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the stream key as the stream’s password and address: do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs.
- Check encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set codec, bitrate, frame rate, and audio to values supported by YouTube’s current encoder settings; do not assume one configuration suits every resolution or connection.
- Start early and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS before the intended public start time, then check the incoming preview and audio in Live Control Room. Start the YouTube event as required by its auto-start configuration. Check the public watch page and monitor picture and sound during the stream.
- End the event and encoder deliberately. Follow the event’s start/stop configuration in YouTube Studio, then stop the OBS encoder after ending the event. Test this sequence once before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
Plan event length and archiving
YouTube’s current encoder help documentation says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as a threshold for a single event, not a promise that a longer broadcast will be archived. If an archive matters, plan within the documented limit and verify the current YouTube guidance for your event before streaming.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The file plays in OBS but YouTube shows no incoming video. | The event URL or stream key is missing, incorrect, or belongs to another event. | Copy the current event’s encoder details from Live Control Room into OBS. Keep the key private. |
| YouTube receives a feed, but the event is not public. | The event has not been started, or its auto-start settings do not match the encoder workflow. | Check the event state and its start configuration in YouTube Studio; use the preview before starting. |
| The video stops at the end instead of repeating. | The Media Source Loop option is not enabled or the wrong source is in the scene. | Open the source properties, confirm the selected file, and enable Loop. |
| Viewers hear no audio or see poor-quality video. | Source audio, encoder settings, or connection conditions may be unsuitable. | Inspect OBS audio meters and YouTube’s incoming preview; verify the current supported codec, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings. |
| The stream ends after OBS or the network disconnects. | A playback loop is not a recovery system. | Confirm whether OBS is still running and whether YouTube is receiving the feed. If unattended recovery is essential, use a tested restart/recovery plan or a cloud service built for continuous streaming. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Cost and practical trade-offs
OBS is software for running the encoder locally; the machine and internet connection must remain available for the period you want to stream. A Linux VPS or dedicated host is another possible way to keep a machine online, but the available evidence does not establish a particular provider or guarantee compatibility. A home computer may be sufficient for a shorter, supervised broadcast. Compare the cost and effort of keeping a machine online with a cloud service’s per-slot billing before choosing.
