You can automate OBS to start sending video to YouTube, but AutoHotkey and OBS cannot guarantee that a single broadcast will stay live indefinitely. First make sure YouTube Live is enabled, configure and test OBS, then automate OBS startup only after confirming YouTube’s broadcast settings and preview. You still need a plan for monitoring, outages, and YouTube’s duration handling.
What AutoHotkey and OBS can—and cannot—do
OBS sends an encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube controls the broadcast that viewers see. AutoHotkey can be an optional Windows automation layer, but the reliable, documented starting point here is OBS’s own --startstreaming launch parameter—not an unverified AutoHotkey script.
Starting OBS or seeing “streaming” in OBS does not by itself prove that a viewer-facing YouTube broadcast is live. The result depends on the stream and broadcast settings in YouTube Studio, including auto-start and auto-stop. Check the Live Control Room preview and state before relying on automation.
Check channel eligibility and duration limits
Enable YouTube Live
YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and compliance with its minimum age rule. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current requirements in Get started with live streaming and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan around a broadcast, not an endless session
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a promise that one broadcast can run indefinitely or a statement that longer streams are impossible. If you need a longer-running channel, verify YouTube’s current handling for your planned duration and decide how you will handle ending or restarting a broadcast.
Set up OBS to send video to YouTube
- Create or select the stream: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or choose an encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key from the live-stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. See Manage live stream settings.
- Connect OBS: In OBS, open Settings > Stream and select YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Avoid sharing screenshots that reveal the key.
- Configure your scene and audio: Add the sources your broadcast needs, then confirm the intended microphone or other audio device is selected and its meter responds. A webcam and microphone are useful only when your content calls for live camera or speech; they are not prerequisites for every stream.
- Choose output settings your connection can sustain: Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the computer and reliably available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current recommendations for your intended output. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and transcodes incoming livestreams for different viewers and devices.
- Use the wizard if you are new: OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard considers hardware and network conditions. The OBS Quick Start Guide also covers adding sources, checking audio devices and meters, and testing before a real broadcast.
- Run a test: Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Include representative movement and audio, not just a static image. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators before announcing a public stream; YouTube also recommends monitoring audio and video quality. See YouTube live streaming tips.
Choose how the broadcast goes live
Decide whether you want to start the encoder, schedule a broadcast, or make a viewer-facing broadcast live. YouTube exposes auto-start and auto-stop options in stream settings. Check how they are configured, then confirm the preview and broadcast state in Live Control Room rather than assuming an OBS connection automatically makes the broadcast public.

| Approach | What starts | Preview and confirmation | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start OBS manually | The operator starts the encoder and can observe its state. | You can check YouTube’s preview and broadcast state before telling viewers to tune in. | It does not prevent a later connection loss or replace monitoring. |
Launch OBS with --startstreaming |
OBS documents this parameter as starting the stream when OBS launches. | Confirm YouTube’s preview and live state; encoder startup alone is not confirmation that viewers can see a live broadcast. | It does not guarantee recovery from an outage, machine failure, or an ended broadcast. |
| Schedule a YouTube broadcast | YouTube’s broadcast settings determine how a scheduled broadcast and incoming encoder feed interact. | Check auto-start/auto-stop settings and the Live Control Room preview. | Scheduling does not ensure that the PC, network, or encoder will stay available. |
These behaviors depend on your YouTube and OBS settings. YouTube’s stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions are the places to confirm the current options.
Automate OBS startup on Windows
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter. Its Launch Parameters page also advises setting the Windows scheduled-task working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. That page is dated 2021, so confirm the behavior in the OBS version you use.

obs64.exe. - Use OBS’s documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter if your goal is to have OBS begin streaming when launched. - After launch, check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the preview, stream health, and whether the broadcast is actually live.
AutoHotkey may be used as an additional Windows automation layer, but exact script syntax and compatibility are not established here. Verify the current official AutoHotkey documentation for the version you intend to use before writing or relying on a script. Avoid automation that blindly clicks fixed screen coordinates without checking whether OBS and YouTube are in the expected state.
Keep the stream monitored and recover deliberately
YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality. OBS has automatic reconnect settings, but reconnect is not a guarantee of recovery from an internet outage, machine crash, power loss, thermal shutdown, or an ended or restricted broadcast. Decide who or what will notice a failure, how the stream will be restarted, and how the broadcast state will be checked afterward. Automation cannot keep a PC powered or repair a failed connection.

- If the connection is unstable, reduce output quality until upload capacity can reliably sustain it; measure reliability rather than assuming a particular cable or network accessory guarantees performance.
- If OBS reconnects, verify that YouTube’s preview and viewer-facing broadcast are still active.
- If the stream ends or YouTube applies a restriction, investigate the platform state rather than repeatedly restarting the encoder.
- Protect the stream key as a credential and reset it if compromised.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS connects, but viewers do not see a live broadcast | The encoder feed is running, but broadcast state or auto-start settings do not match expectations. | Check auto-start/auto-stop in YouTube stream settings and confirm the preview and live state in Live Control Room. |
| YouTube shows poor stream health or unstable video | The selected quality may exceed reliable upload capacity, or audio/video configuration may be wrong. | Test upload capacity, lower output demands if needed, inspect audio meters and devices, and test representative motion and sound. |
| OBS does not start streaming when launched automatically | The launch parameter, OBS path, or Windows task working directory may be incorrect, or version behavior may differ. | Verify the documented --startstreaming parameter and set the task working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe; test the launch manually first. |
| A reconnect occurs, but the broadcast is still unavailable | OBS reconnect cannot guarantee recovery from an outage or a broadcast that has ended. | Check the network and YouTube broadcast state, then restart deliberately and verify the preview. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | The key appeared in a script, screenshot, or shared message. | Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement. |
