It is an input option: it applies to the next input, so if that input is an individual clip, FFmpeg may repeat that clip instead of looping the whole playlist. Put it immediately before the concat playlist input when you want the list to repeat. If FFmpeg exits and another process launches it again, that is a separate problem.
Check which input FFmpeg is looping
FFmpeg options normally apply to the next specified file, and -stream_loop is an input option. The value -1 means loop indefinitely. So the key diagnostic is: which -i comes immediately after -stream_loop -1? If it is the first video file, FFmpeg is being told to repeat that input; it is not being told to loop the rotation list. For a concat playlist, the general input shape is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt ... OUTPUTIn this example, the loop option applies to the concat input, playlist.txt. The command is a pattern to adapt, not a tested command for your files or streaming destination. Keep the output options and destination appropriate to your setup.
Compare the option placement
# Loops the individual file that follows it, not the playlist as a whole
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i first-clip.mp4 ...
# Loops the concat-list input
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt ...Do not infer the cause from the symptom alone: without your command, playlist, and logs, incorrect option placement is a likely explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Confirm the concat playlist is the input you intended
The concat demuxer reads a text script of files and directives, then presents those files sequentially as one input. It adjusts timestamps so each file begins after the preceding file. Review the concat demuxer documentation while checking the list.
- Verify that the command uses
-f concatand that the following-inames the playlist file—not the first video clip. - Open the playlist and check that every intended
fileline is present and in the desired order. - Confirm each path resolves from the working directory used by the process. A path that works in your shell may fail when a service or scheduled task runs from a different directory.
- By default, the demuxer applies a safe-path check that rejects unsafe paths and directives.
-safe 0allows any filename; use it only when your paths require it, and only with a playlist you trust.
Tell an input loop from a process restart
Watch what happens when playback appears to return to the start. If the same FFmpeg process remains alive and begins the sequence again, investigate the input loop and playlist. If FFmpeg exits and a service, script, container policy, or scheduler starts a new process, investigate that external restart mechanism instead. A repeated launch can look like a playlist loop, but changing -stream_loop will not fix a supervisor that is relaunching FFmpeg.

Check for compatibility or join problems
If FFmpeg gets through later entries but stalls, glitches, or fails at transitions, the issue may be the files rather than the loop setting. The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration information can also cause artifacts. Check the media and playlist durations against the demuxer requirements in the FFmpeg formats documentation.
When the inputs do not have compatible stream layouts or cannot be concatenated as-is, FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding, from the concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding is needed. See the FFmpeg FAQ. Re-encoding is a workflow change, not a fix for an option that is simply attached to the wrong input.

Debug in this order
- Read the complete command. Locate
-stream_loop -1and identify the very next input. If it is a single clip, move the loop option so it precedes the concat-list input. - Verify the playlist input. Check for
-f concat, the intended list filename after-i, and all expected entries in the list. - Observe whether FFmpeg exits. If the process terminates before a new one starts, inspect its error output. If it stays alive while the sequence repeats, focus on input and playlist configuration. If a new process appears, inspect the service, script, container policy, or scheduler that launches it.
- Investigate transitions only if later entries are reached. Check stream compatibility and duration information. If the files cannot satisfy the demuxer’s requirements, consider a concat-filter workflow with re-encoding.
- Inspect playlist automation when applicable. If another tool generates or updates the list, check whether it changes, truncates, or replaces the file while FFmpeg is running.
