Rehearse the stream, ask the charity whether it can share the event, and follow up with thanks and an impact update.
Before you announce the fundraiser
Choose a donation route viewers can use
Decide how donations will reach the intended charity before you promote the stream. Options may include a fundraising page, a platform’s native charity tools, or another route supported by the charity and streaming platform. Crisis lists Tiltify, JustGiving, and native YouTube or Facebook tools as possibilities; JustGiving describes connecting supported livestream platforms. These options are not interchangeable: availability can depend on the charity, country, platform, and account. Check the current setup and eligibility with the platform and charity before publishing your link. JustGiving
Finish the campaign page before sharing it. Add the beneficiary, a realistic goal if you are using one, a clear description, and any milestones or incentives you plan to use. Open the donation link yourself and check that the destination and instructions are understandable.
Set the event details and format
Choose a date and time that fit your audience, then decide what viewers will see: a game session, challenge, art stream, interview, or conversation connected to the cause. There is no universally best format or broadcast hour established by the guidance cited here. If you stream regularly, use what you know about when your own community tends to watch rather than assuming a general peak-time recommendation applies to you.

Prepare a short, accurate event description that answers five questions: which charity benefits, why you are fundraising, what will happen on stream, when and where to watch, and how to donate. Check whether the charity has approved graphics, banners, overlays, or sample messaging you can use.
How to promote the livestream before it starts
Share where your community already gathers
Post the event on your own social accounts and in relevant communities where fundraising announcements are welcome. The British Red Cross points to communities such as Discord, Reddit, and Facebook; WWF recommends early and repeated social promotion, teasers, and sharing a stream schedule. Adapt the message to each community’s rules rather than posting the same link indiscriminately. British Red Cross streaming guidance · WWF Streaming Fundraiser Toolkit
Ask the charity about sharing the event
Send the charity the exact date, time, viewing link, donation route, and a sentence about what you are doing. Ask whether it can list or share the stream, and whether it has assets or approved wording for fundraisers. Some charities invite this kind of notification: Crisis says it may promote streams when notified and tagged, but promotion is not guaranteed. Crisis UK: Streaming for charity

Plan reminders rather than relying on one announcement
A practical plan is an initial announcement, a later reminder with a teaser or event detail, and a day-of reminder with the time and direct links. This is a useful way to apply advice to promote early and often, not a required post count; choose a cadence that suits your audience and avoid overwhelming them. Tiltify’s YouTube guidance recommends creating the livestream ahead of time so the community has notice. Tiltify YouTube livestreaming guidance
Keep the donation route easy to find in every announcement. If your tools support it, add the same campaign link to a pinned post, stream description, or chatbot command such as !donate. Confirm that the link works on mobile as well as desktop.

Prepare the stream and protect participants
Test the setup and transitions
Before the event, test the stream, microphone, and audio levels. Rehearse the opening, transitions between activities, how you will show or say the donation link, and what happens if a technical issue interrupts the broadcast. If possible, ask another person to watch and flag audio or quality problems while you focus on hosting. The American Red Cross recommends testing and using a helper to identify issues. American Red Cross Facebook fundraising toolkit
Get permission before people or private locations appear
Tell guests what the stream involves and obtain their consent before putting them on camera. The American Red Cross Facebook guidance calls for signed releases for participants and written permission for private property. Follow the requirements that apply to your event, location, charity, and platform, and get permission before reposting people’s images or video afterward.

What to do during the charity livestream
Make the purpose clear at the start
Open by naming the charity, explaining why you are fundraising, and stating what viewers can do to help. Give the donation link or instructions plainly; do not assume a viewer knows where it is from a prior post.
Repeat the message for people who arrive late
Viewers join at different times, so restate the cause and call to action periodically. Invite people to share the stream as well as donate. Keep the link visible in the description, pinned message, or supported chatbot command, and make sure any spoken instructions match the current campaign page.

Use participation ideas as optional moments
A goal, milestone, poll, reward, challenge, or themed segment can give the audience a way to take part and create natural moments to update viewers. WWF and Tiltify describe these as engagement options, not guaranteed ways to raise more. Choose ideas that fit the fundraiser and do not make a reward the only reason to donate. Tiltify campaign guidance
Acknowledge donations and comments as you can. If another person is available, ask them to monitor chat and flag technical issues so you can stay engaged with the stream.
After the stream: thank supporters and report back
Post a thank-you after the broadcast and, where appropriate, share the replay or a concise recap. Tell supporters what their participation helped make possible, and share an impact update when you have one. WWF recommends thanking donors, celebrating the campaign, and sharing impact after it ends. Before reposting anyone’s image or footage, confirm you have the necessary permission.
