The likely cause cannot be identified without the script, scheduler settings, playlist, and API response. Start by comparing what the schedule says should run, what YouTube currently has in the playlist, and what the script tried to change. Do not advance the rotation cursor until the write is acknowledged and the resulting playlist order is verified.
Compare the schedule, live playlist, and attempted change
For the affected run, check three states side by side: the expected block and due time; the playlist’s current items and positions; and the API mutation the script attempted, including its response. This separates a schedule-selection problem from an incorrect playlist read or a failed write.
Log the scheduler decision
Record the expected block identifier, due time with its timezone, rotation cursor or index before and after the run, and the block the code actually selected. These are diagnostic checks, not assumptions about how your particular scheduler works. If the wrong block was selected before any API call, inspect the schedule calculation, timezone conversion, and cursor update logic first.
Read YouTube’s current playlist state
Use YouTube Data API’s playlistItems.list for the target playlist immediately before mutation. Inspect each item’s snippet.position, snippet.resourceId.videoId, and id. Follow pagination when the playlist takes more than one response page; a cached or partial listing may not reflect the current order.

Check identifiers and write requests
Distinguish a playlist-item ID from a video ID
A playlist entry is a playlistItem resource. Its id identifies that entry, while snippet.resourceId.videoId identifies the associated video. Insert requests identify a destination playlist and a video resource; update and delete operations act on playlist-item resources. Passing a video ID where an operation expects a playlist-item ID can target the wrong object or fail.
Validate the insert and its response
For playlistItems.insert, check that the request includes snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId, with the video resource kind set to youtube#video and the intended video ID. The official playlist implementation guide describes OAuth 2.0 authorization. Log the API response, including its error body, and mark the block complete only after the request succeeds and the resulting playlist state has been checked.

Confirm access and playlist support
Use an authenticated account that can modify the intended playlist, and confirm the requested operation is supported for that playlist type. The insert endpoint documentation lists acceptable OAuth scopes and documents errors including permission problems, missing playlists or videos, and unsupported playlist operations. Diagnose the specific response rather than treating every failure as a scheduling bug.
Verify playlist order before moving the cursor
The playlist-item resource has a snippet.position field, and playlistItems.update can change an item’s position. If a block belongs at a particular point, verify that the update request uses the correct playlist-item ID and position, then fetch the playlist again and inspect the resulting order. The API overview describes the available playlist-item operations: list, insert, update, and delete.

Only advance the persisted rotation cursor after the mutation has been acknowledged and a fresh read shows the intended state. If a scheduled job can run twice, first check whether an earlier attempt already inserted or moved the item. Make retries idempotent and record a run identifier so a repeat invocation does not duplicate work or skip the next block.
Use retries and quota carefully
Google for Developers’ current endpoint documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists a quota impact of 1 unit for playlistItems.list and 50 units each for playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.delete. Avoid tight write-and-retry loops while debugging. Retry only errors your implementation treats as transient; for other failures, inspect the response and fix the underlying request, permission, or playlist issue.

Troubleshoot by symptom
