If the streams should take turns, set explicit non-overlapping run windows and leave time for a clean handoff; if both should run at once, check that the VPS can handle their combined resource and network load. This separation keeps a schedule change or restart for one stream from accidentally stopping the other.
Choose whether the playlists take turns or run together
First decide whether the two broadcasts are meant to be sequential or simultaneous. That determines whether you need to prevent overlap in the schedule or make sure the VPS can sustain both encoders at once.
- Alternating schedules: Set a start and end time for each job. Leave a handoff margin so the outgoing encoder can stop and the next YouTube event can be ready before its encoder starts.
- Concurrent schedules: Run both jobs independently, then monitor the combined CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network use. There is no universal VPS sizing formula established here; workload and video settings matter.
Use UTC for schedule definitions if the VPS, scheduler, and people managing the broadcasts may use different time zones. Document the intended windows, including the time zone, rather than relying on an operator’s local clock.
Isolate each stream as a separate job
Treat each playlist as its own encoder job. YouTube’s encoder workflow associates a feed with a stream URL and stream key for a particular event; keep those settings tied to the process intended to serve that event. YouTube’s guidance covers the event and encoder connection, but does not prescribe a Linux scheduler or service manager. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

- Create separate media lists. Use a distinct playlist manifest for each program, such as
playlist-aandplaylist-b. Keep each job’s files and working directory identifiable. - Define separate process or service entries. Give each encoder a unique name, working directory, restart behavior, and log destination. Whether you use systemd, cron, or another scheduler depends on the VPS operating system and your setup.
- Bind each job to its intended YouTube event. Store that event’s stream URL and key in the corresponding encoder configuration. Treat stream keys as credentials: restrict access to their files and avoid exposing them in shared logs.
- Schedule and control jobs independently. Make start, stop, and restart actions target a single named job. Avoid broad stop commands or shared automation that can terminate both processes when changing only one schedule.
- Keep separate logs and check state per job. Track each process’s state and exit code so you can tell which playlist failed and restart or alert on that job without disrupting the other.
The exact commands vary with the operating system, service manager, and encoder, so do not copy a generic command into production without adapting paths, user permissions, event details, and schedule times.
Set schedule boundaries and YouTube capacity
For playlists that take turns
Write down each run window explicitly. End the first job before the second is due, then leave a margin for stopping the encoder and preparing the next event. Avoid schedules where one process is configured to restart after the next one should already have started; independent restart policies should respect the same run windows.

For simultaneous broadcasts
Check the actual combined load while both encoders are running: CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound bandwidth. The sources do not establish a formula for translating resolution or bitrate into a safe VPS size, so validate the particular machine and streams rather than assuming two jobs will fit because one does.
Check active-stream limits and event configuration
YouTube currently documents a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. Two streams fit within those counts only if other active streams have not used the available capacity. YouTube does not say that two scheduled streams must always use different keys. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archival detail for YouTube events, not a way to keep an encoder running indefinitely.
Validate each playlist before relying on automation
If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a sequence of files, validate each manifest and its media before going live. The concat demuxer expects compatible stream layouts and time bases; it uses each file’s duration to adjust the next file’s timestamps, so inaccurate duration information can produce timestamp artifacts. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Test each YouTube event separately, even when both jobs share one VPS. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup, checking the Live Control Room preview, verifying that the live stream is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality. Apply those checks to each output rather than treating one successful stream as proof that the other is configured correctly. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.

During operation, monitor each encoder process, its exit status and logs, VPS resource use, and the public watch page for each broadcast. Decide in advance whether a failed job should restart only itself or alert an operator. A process supervisor can help manage restarts, but the recovery behavior is your configuration—not a YouTube guarantee.

- One playlist stops unexpectedly: Check that job’s logs and exit code, its manifest and media paths, and its event’s stream URL/key. Restart only that named job after correcting the cause.
- The second schedule starts late or not at all: Check the time zone, the explicit window boundaries, and whether the first process is still running. Confirm the handoff margin is sufficient for the outgoing job to stop and the next event to become ready.
- The stream is rejected or cannot start: Check the selected YouTube event, its stream URL/key, and the channel/key active-stream counts in Live Control Room.
- Audio/video artifacts appear in an FFmpeg playlist: Inspect the concat manifest for compatible stream layouts and time bases, and verify duration information used for timestamp placement.
- Both streams degrade when they overlap: Review VPS CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network use while both encoders are active; reduce the concurrency or move the workload if the machine cannot sustain it.
