To loop a playlist of local videos in OBS, add them as a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. That keeps playback cycling inside OBS; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. Reduce avoidable gaps by checking every file, matching encoder settings to your measured upload capacity, testing the stream before launch, and monitoring YouTube Live Control Room.
What counts as a playlist gap?
A gap can happen at different points: a pause or blank between files, a file that fails to play, an interruption in the encoded signal sent by OBS, a break in YouTube’s ingest, or buffering on a viewer’s device. Looping controls only the local playback rotation. Your files, OBS, computer, network, YouTube ingest and viewer playback are separate links in the chain.
YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. No India-wide ISP performance figure or universal upload-speed requirement is established here, so measure the actual connection at the location where the stream will run rather than relying on a generic speed target.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
1. Add the local files as a VLC Video source
- Install VLC. The OBS Project documentation says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream.
- Add the video files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order. Choose shuffle only if you want the order to change; shuffle and looping are separate controls.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Preview the source and check that it advances through the files and starts again at the end.
OBS’s Media Source is the simpler choice when you need to repeat one local video: enable its Loop control. OBS documents these source behaviors in its Media Sources guide (dated 2022-01-11).

2. Check the channel and create the live event
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, then copy the event’s server URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event, so do not publish or share it.
For an event that should remain available afterward, check YouTube Studio’s current archive guidance when planning the duration. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive behavior, not a rule requiring a 24/7 broadcast to be divided into segments.

3. Set the encoder for the connection you actually have
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table to select a bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate; do not apply one bitrate to every stream.
More resolution or a higher frame rate generally calls for more bitrate. Choose a supported setting that leaves room for normal variation in the connection rather than running at its measured ceiling. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. That is general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific network measurement.

4. Test the complete playlist and stream before going live
- Play every file, especially the transitions at the end and beginning of the playlist. Check for corrupt files, unexpected black frames, silent sections, audio clipping and mismatched levels.
- Use the same kind of movement and audio as the planned broadcast when testing; a static screen or silent test may not expose issues that appear during the program.
- Check OBS’s output and the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the event can be watched and that the health indicator and any error messages are clear before relying on it.
- Measure upload capacity on the streaming connection, not just download speed. Account for other people and devices using that connection, which can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS.
YouTube advises streamers to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. Its streaming tips also recommend leaving upload headroom and testing a backup encoder.
Choose continuity settings with the right trade-offs
Ordered or shuffled rotation
Use an ordered playlist when the sequence matters—for example, when videos form a program. Use shuffle only when varying the order is intentional. Preview the sequence before launch; shuffle does not itself prevent playback failures or pauses.

Quality or network headroom
A higher-quality encode is useful only if the connection can carry it consistently. Follow YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate, then leave the recommended 20% headroom. A speed test is a snapshot, so also consider whether the connection is shared or varies at busy times.
Latency or buffering resilience
Lower latency can increase buffering because the viewer’s player has less read-ahead buffer. For a non-interactive music, ambience or scheduled video stream, do not choose low latency just to solve a playlist transition; it addresses a different part of the delivery chain. See YouTube’s latency guidance for the available trade-offs.

One encoder or a tested backup
A second encoder can provide a recovery path, but only if it is configured and tested. YouTube recommends a failover test: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player rolls over to the backup. This tests a specific redundancy workflow; it does not guarantee that every failure will be invisible to viewers.

| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A pause, blank frame or failed transition between local videos | OBS source or media file | Play the affected file locally, check the playlist order and Loop Playlist setting, then preview the transition in OBS. For a single repeated file, confirm Media Source’s Loop control is enabled. |
| The picture or sound is wrong in OBS’s output | Source routing, encoder, CPU load or local archive file | Check that the intended source and audio are routed to the scene, review OBS encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect the local files. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance can help identify output-setting mismatches. |
| OBS output looks healthy but the stream drops or buffers | Outbound network or YouTube ingest | Check upload capacity and connection stability at the streaming location, reduce competing network use, and review Live Control Room’s health messages. If the outbound connection is faulty, contact your ISP; YouTube notes that network disruption can break a stream. |
| Viewers report buffering while the source keeps playing | Delivery latency, available bandwidth or viewer connection | Review YouTube’s stream health and latency settings. Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can make buffering more likely; it is not automatically the best setting for a one-way 24/7 program. |
| A primary encoder failure interrupts the broadcast | Recovery configuration | If using a backup encoder, verify that it is configured and run YouTube’s failover test before depending on it. A backup is not a substitute for checking the local playlist and connection. |
