OBS can play several common video formats, and its VLC Video Source can arrange clips into a playlist. First check whether your files play correctly; convert only when a file has a compatibility problem or you want a consistent format for YouTube uploads.
Do you need to convert all videos to MP4 for OBS?
No. OBS’s Media Source guide lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WEBM among supported video types. A file’s extension alone does not tell you which codecs it contains, so test playback rather than converting a whole library by default. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Container and codec are different: MP4 is a container that can hold video and audio encoded in different ways. OBS’s format guide lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 in MP4, alongside multiple audio codecs. An MP4 file can therefore still fail in a particular workflow because of its streams, not its filename. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.
How to add a video playlist to OBS without converting
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene. If the source is not available, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Add and order the files. In the source’s playlist controls, add the videos and arrange them in the sequence you want. Confirm the order before going live.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable looping if the playlist should repeat; enable shuffle only if you want clips in a changing order. The relevant controls belong to the VLC source, not to file conversion.
- Check a representative clip. Confirm picture, audio, duration, and playlist order before relying on the scene. If one file fails, troubleshoot that file rather than batch-converting everything.

When to convert, remux, or transcode
- Keep the original file if it plays correctly in the OBS playlist and meets your workflow needs.
- Remux when the streams themselves are suitable but the container needs to change. Remuxing copies the audio and video streams into another container without re-encoding them.
- Transcode when the codecs or other stream properties need to change. Transcoding re-encodes streams and can trade quality, file size, and processing time according to the chosen settings.
Do not assume that changing a file’s extension converts it, or that every MP4 uses H.264. The right operation depends on the actual streams and the intended destination. OBS playback compatibility and YouTube’s upload recommendations overlap, but they are not identical requirements.
What format does YouTube recommend for uploads?
YouTube’s recommended upload settings specify an MP4 container and H.264 video, with AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio among its listed audio codec options. YouTube also recommends matching the frame rate to the rate at which the video was recorded. Consult the current YouTube recommended upload encoding settings when preparing uploads.

For SDR uploads, YouTube lists these bitrate references. They are recommendations, not universal minimums or a requirement to alter every source:

Preserve an appropriate source resolution and frame rate instead of blindly upscaling or changing frame rate. A bitrate recommendation cannot guarantee a particular file size or quality after conversion; those depend on the source and encoding settings.

How to batch convert videos safely
The exact steps depend on the conversion application and operating system; there is no single verified command or interface that applies to every tool. Use a converter that explicitly supports batch processing, and choose MP4 with H.264 video and an audio codec supported by your destination when transcoding for YouTube.
- Sort and back up the source clips. Keep originals until the converted files have been checked.
- Choose the operation per source. Remux when only the container needs to change and the streams are suitable; transcode only when you need to change codecs or other stream properties.
- Set output properties deliberately. For YouTube-oriented files, use MP4 and H.264 video, select compatible audio, and preserve the source frame rate where possible. Do not upscale solely to meet a target.
- Keep filenames and ordering predictable. Use an explicit sequence in filenames or the OBS playlist controls if playback order matters. Do not assume a converter will preserve the order you intended.
- Convert one representative file first. Open it in OBS and check image, sound, duration, and playlist behavior before processing the rest of the collection.
- Review the output set. Check that each expected file exists and plays before replacing or deleting source copies.
Uploading several videos to YouTube
YouTube’s ordinary desktop upload flow allows selection of up to 15 videos at a time. That is multi-select upload support, not automatic batch conversion or metadata entry: details still need to be edited for each file. See Upload YouTube videos.

Why won’t my MP4 play in OBS?
- The extension may hide an incompatible stream. MP4 is a container, not a guarantee of a particular codec combination. Check the file’s actual video and audio streams.
- You are using a source that does not handle the playlist as expected. For a list of clips, use VLC Video Source and verify that VLC is installed.
- VLC architecture does not match OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- The file itself may be damaged or incomplete. Test it outside the playlist and compare its playback with another clip before converting a whole batch.
- Conversion may have changed more than the container. If a remuxed file still fails, changing containers alone may not address the codec issue; consider transcoding a single copy to a compatible target and verify it before batch processing.
