OBS can play 10-bit video files as media sources in a playlist. But that does not mean the YouTube stream will remain 10-bit or appear as HDR: playback input and stream output are separate. For HDR output, YouTube’s documented OBS setup calls for HEVC, a supported hardware encoder, Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color settings.
What “10-bit” means for an OBS playlist
Bit depth describes how many levels of color information a video format can represent. A 10-bit file can be used as playback input in OBS; OBS’s high-precision color guidance covers 10-bit formats for video playback as well as streaming and recording (OBS high-precision color guidance).
That general support does not guarantee that every codec and container will work in every OBS installation or on every computer. Nor does the input file dictate the format OBS sends to YouTube. OBS’s output encoder and color configuration determine the encoded stream. In particular, OBS’s source information says H.264 output supports only 8-bit color and Rec. 709 (OBS high-precision color guidance).
Use a 10-bit file in a playlist for ordinary playback
- Add the media source: In OBS, create or select a scene, add a Media Source, and choose the video file. Confirm that the file plays in the preview. The exact codec and container support depends on the playback path and system; official guidance does not enumerate every combination.
- Build the playlist: Use the media source’s playlist controls to add the files you want played in sequence. Check the source’s playback and looping options for the behavior you need.
- Check the stream output separately: If your goal is standard SDR playback, the source being 10-bit alone does not make the stream HDR. Select an output encoder and color settings appropriate to the result you want.
For YouTube HDR, configure the output—not just the file
YouTube’s current HDR live-stream guidance specifies HEVC (H.265), 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries, and transfer characteristics matching the source: PQ or HLG. YouTube states that HDR streaming is supported only with H.265 (HEVC) (YouTube Help: Stream HDR video on YouTube).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For OBS, YouTube documents version 30.1 or later and a compatible hardware HEVC encoder configured for Main 10, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; YouTube recommends HLG. Your encoder must support the selected settings, and the color metadata must match the source. Consult YouTube’s instructions for the ingest path you choose, since RTMPS and HLS have different configuration requirements. For HLS, YouTube specifies transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist (YouTube Help: Stream HDR video on YouTube).
- Match the source: A 10-bit label by itself does not establish that a file contains HDR, or identify whether its transfer characteristics are PQ or HLG.
- Confirm encoder support: The selected hardware encoder must support HEVC Main 10 and the chosen color format. If it does not, use an output configuration it supports or stream SDR instead.
- Check capture hardware if applicable: If OBS receives HDR from an external capture device rather than a local file, OBS says the device must support a 10-bit format such as P010. Its cited external HDR capture guidance currently describes Windows support (OBS high-precision color guidance).
How to tell whether the stream is actually HDR
Check the complete output chain: the source’s HDR color information, OBS’s selected encoder and color settings, and YouTube’s ingest configuration. A file extension, filename, or 10-bit bit depth is not proof that the output is HDR. If any link in the chain is configured for 8-bit Rec. 709, the stream will not preserve the intended HDR output as configured.

Common problems and fixes
- The file will not play: The fact that OBS supports 10-bit playback formats generally does not guarantee this particular codec/container combination. Check that the file plays through your installed OBS playback path and verify the file’s encoding.
- The file plays, but YouTube is not receiving HDR: Playback support is separate from output support. Check for HEVC, Main 10, P010, Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, and a compatible hardware encoder; confirm the selected ingest path’s requirements.
- The encoder cannot use the requested settings: The hardware encoder may not support the selected codec, profile, or color format. Choose settings the encoder supports, or use an SDR output path.
- Colors look wrong or HDR is not recognized: Verify that BT.2020 primaries and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics match the source and that OBS and YouTube are configured consistently.
- External HDR capture is unavailable: Check whether the capture device supports a 10-bit format such as P010 and whether your operating system is within OBS’s documented support for that capture workflow.
