Use the YouTube Data API’s videos.insert method with uploadType=resumable. Start an authenticated upload session, save the session URI from the response’s Location header, and transfer the video to that URI. If the connection drops, query the session and continue from the next byte the server confirms it received.
This is a developer procedure for an existing video file, not a guide to uploading through YouTube Studio. Google for Developers says the resumable protocol can make video uploads more reliable, including on unstable or low-bandwidth connections. Read Google’s resumable upload guide.
Before you start
- A Google Cloud project with the YouTube Data API enabled and credentials authorized to upload to the intended channel.
- The video file’s exact byte length and MIME type, such as
video/mp4. - A way to retain the session URI securely until the upload completes. Treat it as sensitive: it is needed to transfer and recover the upload.
The videos.insert reference lists a maximum file size of 256 GB and accepts video/* or application/octet-stream. See Google’s method reference for the current limits and request fields.
Start a resumable upload session
Send an authenticated POST to the upload endpoint. The part parameter names the video resource parts you are setting or want returned; include the parts required for your metadata, such as snippet,status when setting those fields.

- Construct the request URL:
https://www.googleapis.com/upload/youtube/v3/videos?uploadType=resumable&part=snippet,status. Adjustpartto match the resource parts in your request. - Set request headers: include
Authorization: Bearer ACCESS_TOKEN,Content-Type: application/json; charset=UTF-8,X-Upload-Content-Length: TOTAL_LENGTH, andX-Upload-Content-Type: MIME_TYPE. Replace the example values with the authorized access token, file length in bytes, and actual media type. - Send the video resource JSON: provide the metadata and status fields you intend to set. For example, a request body can include a
snippetwith a title and description, and astatuswith the intended privacy setting. - Save the
Locationresponse header: a successful initiation returns the session URI. Persist it so the transfer can continue after a client or network interruption.
Do not assume that the upload will become public immediately. Google warns that videos uploaded through videos.insert by unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private viewing until the project passes an audit. Check the project’s verification status and the current method documentation before promising public availability.
Transfer the video
For a single-request transfer, send a PUT to the saved session URI with the file’s binary bytes. Set Content-Type to the media MIME type and Content-Length to the number of bytes being sent.

Replace SESSION_URI, ACCESS_TOKEN, and TOTAL_LENGTH with the values for this upload. When YouTube finishes creating the video, the response is HTTP 201 and includes the created video resource. Keep the session URI until you have confirmed completion.
Choose single-transfer or chunked upload

When chunking, larger chunks mean fewer requests and are more efficient on reliable connections; smaller chunks may limit the amount that must be resent on less reliable connections. There is no universally best chunk size. Follow Google’s protocol guide for the request headers and byte-range format for each chunk.

Resume after an interruption
Do not blindly resend the last request: some or all of its bytes may already have arrived. Ask the server for the session’s confirmed progress by sending an empty PUT to the saved session URI.

308 Resume Incomplete, inspect theRangeheader. Its last-byte value is the last byte the server confirms it has received. - Start the next request at the byte immediately after that value. For example, if the server reports
Range: bytes=0-1048575, continue at byte1048576. - For the resumed request, send only the remaining file bytes (or the next chunk) and set
Content-Rangeto describe the exact range being sent and the total file length. - Continue checking the response. A completed transfer returns HTTP
201; an incomplete one returns308with the server’s latest confirmed range.
If the response has no Range header, no bytes are confirmed; begin at byte zero. Always use the server-reported offset rather than assuming a failed request transferred nothing.

Handle server errors and expired sessions
Retryable server errors
Google’s guide identifies HTTP 500, 502, 503, and 504 as server errors that can be retried. Use exponential backoff rather than rapid repeated requests. If the response includes Retry-After, wait for the indicated interval. Before resuming media transfer, query the session status so the next request starts at the confirmed offset.
Expired session URI
Session URIs have a finite lifetime. A 404 for an expired session means you must initiate a new resumable session and upload the file again from the beginning; the previous session’s confirmed bytes cannot be carried into a new session. Google recommends starting soon after receiving a session URI and resuming soon after an interruption.

Check quota before planning large uploads
Google’s current videos.insert method page describes 100 calls per day in the Video Uploads quota bucket. The YouTube Data API overview lists default allocations of 100 videos.insert calls and 100 search.list calls, plus 10,000 units per day for other endpoints. These figures are tied to Google’s published quota pages, not a guarantee for every project: Google’s revision history records a move to separate granular quota buckets for videos.insert and search.list beginning June 1, 2026. Check the current quota shown for your own project in Google Cloud Console before scheduling uploads.
Common upload problems
- Initiation is rejected: check that the API is enabled, the authorization is valid for the intended channel, the request includes the required resource parts, and the length and MIME type headers match the file.
- The upload seems stuck after a disconnect: query the session with the empty PUT status request. Continue at the next byte after the server-reported
Range, not at an estimated offset. - A session request returns 404: the session has expired. Start a new session and restart the upload from the beginning.
- Repeated server errors occur: apply exponential backoff, honor
Retry-Afterif present, and check session status before sending more media. - A chunk request is rejected: verify the byte range and total length, and ensure non-final chunks use the same size and a multiple of 256 KB.
- The uploaded video remains private: check whether the API project is subject to Google’s audit restriction for projects created after July 28, 2020, and whether the project has passed the audit.
- Uploads fail after reaching a daily limit: inspect the project’s current quota in Google Cloud Console; published default figures may not reflect the project’s active allocation.
