For a long OBS recording that must survive an unexpected crash, record to MKV, then use OBS’s built-in remux tool to make an MP4 copy if you need one. To play an existing MP4 in a scene, add it as a Media Source. These are different tasks: remuxing changes the file container without re-encoding the audio or video, while a Media Source plays a file; neither is a guaranteed repair for damaged media or unsupported codecs.
Choose a recording format that can survive an interruption
Ordinary MP4 and MOV files need finalization. If OBS or the computer stops before finalization, the recording may be unrecoverable. OBS recommends MKV for most recording workflows because an unfinished MKV remains playable and recoverable. OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide explains the container trade-offs, and its Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV when a recording may not stop gracefully.

Record in MKV and make an MP4 afterward
- In OBS, open Settings → Output. Set the recording path to the folder where you want the files saved, then choose the recording format.
- Select MKV for a long recording where recoverability is more important than writing directly to MP4.
- After recording, choose File → Remux Recordings, select the MKV file, and run Remux. OBS creates an MP4 without re-encoding the audio or video streams.
- If you want OBS to do this automatically after recording stops, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically remux to mp4.
Remuxing changes the container; it is not a universal repair tool. OBS documents the workflow but does not promise that remuxing will fix a damaged file, unsupported codec, or every playback fault.
When direct MP4 output matters: check Hybrid MP4
Hybrid MP4 may suit a workflow that needs MP4 compatibility as well as better protection against an interrupted write. OBS says it uses fragmented writing and performs a soft-remux on normal completion. It was introduced in OBS 30.2. The supported codecs are limited, so confirm that both your selected audio and video codecs appear in OBS’s Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats guide. That guide also says Hybrid MOV followed in OBS 32.0; those version details are documentation facts, not a guarantee that a particular installation or codec combination supports the format.

Play an existing long MP4 in an OBS scene
- In the scene where you want the video, add a Media Source and select the local MP4 file.
- In the Media Source properties, check Use hardware decoding when available if your GPU supports decoding that file type. This is an option to try, not a guaranteed fix for stuttering or other playback problems.
- If the built-in Media Source does not support the file’s format, use OBS’s separate VLC Video source for extended format support. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
OBS lists MP4 among Media Source’s supported video types and describes the hardware-decoding option in its Media Sources guide.
Plan storage separately from file reliability
The recording path determines where OBS saves recordings. If long sessions fill that drive, choosing a location with more available capacity—such as an external SSD—may address the space constraint. More storage does not fix an unfinalized MP4, an incompatible codec, a damaged file, or a playback problem.
