Set up a shuffled playlist in OBS
- Install VLC with the right architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. Match VLC to OBS; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents this prerequisite.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the scene you plan to broadcast, select the add-source control and choose VLC Video. Open its properties.
- Add your video files. Add the files you want in the playlist through the source properties. VLC Video supports multiple files; the ordinary Media Source workflow documented by OBS is for an individual media file.
- Turn on Shuffle Playlist. This setting randomizes the media-file order instead of playing files in their listed order.
- Choose whether to loop. Turn on Loop Playlist if the source should restart after it runs out of media files. Shuffle and loop are separate controls.
- Place the source in the broadcast scene. Make sure the scene containing the VLC Video source is the scene being sent to your stream.
The OBS Project guide, dated January 11, 2022, describes the shuffle and loop controls in its Media Sources documentation. In OBS’s implementation, shuffle is off by default and loop is on by default; verify both settings in the source properties rather than relying on defaults.
What shuffle does—and what it does not promise
Shuffle randomizes the playlist’s file order. OBS’s source implementation creates a shuffled media-file array when shuffle is enabled and there is more than one file. The documentation and implementation do not establish that a fresh independent random choice is made after every video, nor do they specify a guaranteed reshuffle schedule for each repeat cycle or scene activation. If a particular sequence on every loop matters, do not assume Shuffle Playlist guarantees it.
If VLC Video is missing
- Confirm VLC is installed.
- Match its architecture to OBS. The documented requirement for 64-bit OBS is 64-bit VLC.
- After installing or correcting VLC, reopen OBS and check the add-source menu again.
For a separate playlist-source option, OBS’s resource listing includes the Media Playlist Source plugin. Its listing states a minimum OBS Studio version of 30.0.0 and describes playlist editing without restarting playback and saving the current file for OBS restart. These are plugin-author feature claims; check the current listing for supported versions and compatibility before installing.

Before sending the playlist to YouTube Live
These steps configure OBS playback; they do not establish that a YouTube account is eligible to go live or determine the YouTube broadcast settings required for a particular channel. Check YouTube’s current Live setup guidance and account status separately. Also make sure you have the rights or permissions needed to stream every video and its audio; playlist shuffle does not change copyright obligations.
