OBS YouTube Stream Looks Blurry? Settings for Pre-Recorded Video Sources

A practical troubleshooting order for blurry YouTube streams from pre-recorded OBS video: check the file, scaling, output settings, encoding, connection, and playback rendition.

A blurry YouTube stream of a pre-recorded video can come from the file itself, how OBS scales it, the stream’s output and encoding settings, your upload connection, or the quality rendition YouTube is playing. Check those stages in that order before raising the bitrate: a sharper encoder setting cannot restore detail that is missing from the source.

Trace the blur from the video file to YouTube playback

Compare the same moving scene at each stage: play the original file locally at its native resolution, inspect it in OBS, then check the live stream on YouTube at a manually selected quality. That separates a soft source or scaling problem from encoding, transmission, or playback quality. A still frame can look clean even when motion exposes compression artifacts.

1. Check the original file and OBS Media Source

Confirm the file has enough detail

Play the exact file you loaded into OBS at its native resolution. If it is low-resolution, already blurry, or heavily compressed, OBS cannot recreate its lost detail by sending it at a larger output resolution. A local file can be added with OBS’s Media Source; a capture card is not needed for this workflow.

OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. In the source’s properties, confirm that the intended file is selected and that playback is running. The Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, Use hardware decoding when available, and Show nothing when playback ends options control playback or decoding behavior; they are not sharpness enhancements. Hardware decoding is off by default. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Inspect the scene transform and preserve the frame shape

Select the Media Source in the scene and inspect how it fits the canvas. Preserve the source’s aspect ratio; stretching it to fill a differently shaped frame can distort the image and make it look worse. Fit or crop deliberately rather than stretching, and avoid enlarging a lower-resolution source beyond what the output requires. OBS’s Aspect Ratio Guide explains the trade-offs, while its Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter guide covers scale filtering. Bicubic is the documented default filter; compare available scale-filter options at the intended output size instead of assuming one is best for every clip.

2. Match OBS canvas, output resolution, and frame rate

In OBS, open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the scene workspace; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size OBS sends as the stream output. The selected downscale filter is used when OBS scales the canvas to that output. OBS’s guidance is that “Output (Scaled) Resolution should be the Stream Output Resolution (720p, 480p, etc).” See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

  • Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you actually intend to stream, not simply the largest number available.
  • Do not upscale a smaller source expecting it to become sharper. If the file is 720p, outputting at 1080p does not add source detail.
  • Set Common FPS Value to suit both the source and the computer. If the clip is 30 fps, or 60 fps causes rendering or encoding strain, try 30 fps rather than forcing 60. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps.

If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, lower the output resolution or frame rate and reassess. Do not reduce them automatically when the stream is otherwise healthy: OBS recommends these changes as performance troubleshooting, not as a universal blur fix. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide also recommends Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio files.

3. Set encoder options to YouTube’s recommendations

In Settings > Output, inspect the stream encoder’s rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and H.264, H.265, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. For H.264, YouTube gives these recommended bitrates by output format:

H.264 stream format YouTube recommended bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that increasing bitrate will fix blur. Select the row that matches your actual H.264 output resolution and frame rate; do not apply these H.264 figures to H.265 or AV1. Your connection must sustain the configured rate. See YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

In YouTube Studio, check the live stream’s health messages while the clip plays. In OBS, look for dropped frames and rendering or encoding lag. Test a representative moving section, not only a static title card. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output demand to a level it can maintain reliably; a bitrate that fluctuates or overwhelms the connection is not a dependable route to a clean picture.

4. Compare YouTube’s processed playback, not only the OBS preview

OBS’s preview shows what the scene looks like before YouTube processes the incoming stream. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats, and viewers may see different available renditions. After the stream’s renditions have finished processing, open the YouTube player’s quality menu and select the intended resolution for comparison. A lower selected rendition can look softer than the OBS preview even when OBS is sending the intended output. YouTube’s Transcodes / Transcoding page describes this processing.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see Likely stage to inspect first What to do
The locally played file is already soft Source file Check its native resolution and quality. Changing OBS bitrate cannot restore detail that is absent from the file.
The OBS preview looks distorted or soft Source transform Check the selected file, source dimensions, aspect ratio, and scale filter. Fit or crop without stretching; avoid unnecessary enlargement.
The OBS preview looks good but YouTube motion is blocky Encoding or connection Check that the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s guidance, then inspect OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators during motion.
The stream looks soft only at some YouTube qualities Playback rendition Wait for renditions to process and manually compare the intended quality in the YouTube player.
OBS reports rendering or encoding strain Computer workload or output demand Try a lower output resolution or frame rate and check whether the lag clears; do not lower quality settings without evidence of strain.

The exact cause cannot be determined without the file’s native dimensions and frame rate, OBS transforms and output settings, encoder and log data, upload conditions, and the YouTube rendition being watched. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
