If OBS is missing from the list, add its executable with Allow another app. You usually do not need to open a firewall port.
Allow OBS Studio through Windows Firewall
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels or layout can vary slightly by version. You may need an administrator account or approval to change the settings.
- Open the Windows Security app.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows shows one.
- Find OBS Studio in the list and check the box for the network profile you need. If OBS is not listed, select Allow another app, browse to the OBS executable in its installation folder, and add it.
- Confirm the change and retry the OBS task that was failing.
Microsoft documents the allowed-app procedure in its Windows Firewall guidance. Choose the profile that matches the network Windows is currently using rather than enabling every profile automatically.
Choose the right network profile
Windows distinguishes private and public networks by trust level: Microsoft describes a private network as trusted and a public network as untrusted. Enable OBS for the profile on which you need it to work. If you only need OBS on a trusted home network, you may not need to allow it on public networks such as shared or venue Wi-Fi. On a computer managed by a workplace or school, policy may prevent you from changing firewall exceptions. Contact the organization’s IT support rather than trying to bypass its controls.
Why an app exception is preferable to opening a port
For this task, use the app list rather than creating a manual inbound or outbound port rule. Microsoft says allowing an app is generally safer: Windows opens the ports the app needs when required, while a manually opened port remains open until you close it. Do not turn Windows Firewall off as a workaround. Microsoft warns that disabling it can leave the device more vulnerable.
If OBS still cannot connect or capture
An allowed-app entry does not guarantee that every OBS problem is caused by, or fixed by, Windows Firewall. Check the specific task and use these troubleshooting steps:

- Confirm the network profile. Windows may classify the current connection differently from the network where OBS previously worked. Check that the exception is enabled for the profile in use.
- Check which OBS executable is allowed. If you moved or reinstalled OBS, the existing entry may point to an older executable path. Add the executable from the current installation using Allow another app.
- Check other security software. OBS Project notes that antivirus and firewall products can interfere with connectivity and with window or game capture. Follow its known application conflicts guidance and allow OBS local-system and internet access where the security product provides those controls.
- Use a brief security-software test only to diagnose a connection failure. OBS Project suggests temporarily disabling security software to check whether it is blocking a streaming-server connection. If OBS connects during that test, add an OBS exception and re-enable the protection; do not leave security software disabled. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- If the error persists, collect the exact error and connection details. A forum user has reported wording such as “Failed to connect to server. The connection was blocked. Check your firewall / anti-virus settings to make sure OBS is allowed full internet access.” That is an example user report, not an official diagnosis. The OBS forum thread also contains an older troubleshooting suggestion to check the Windows network profile and outbound rules; treat it as a lead, not a guarantee that a rule is the cause.
