If an OBS Media Source is black, first check the selected file, source visibility and stacking order, then confirm playback has not ended. Test the scene in OBS preview and a short local recording before changing YouTube settings: that shows whether the picture disappears inside OBS or only after it is sent to YouTube.
Start with the source, not the YouTube encoder
Select the Media Source in OBS and open its properties. Check that it points to the intended local file, then play that file outside OBS to confirm it opens. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM as supported video types, but a supported extension alone does not guarantee that a particular file is valid or decodes correctly. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
- In the OBS Sources dock, select the relevant Media Source and open its properties.
- Verify the selected file path and choose the intended file if it is wrong or unavailable.
- Play the file in a separate media player. If it fails there too, check the file itself before troubleshooting the OBS scene.
- Return to OBS and watch the preview while the source plays, including near the end of the clip.
Check whether OBS is hiding the picture
In the Sources dock, make sure the eye icon beside the Media Source is enabled. Then inspect the order of the sources: OBS draws sources higher in the list above those lower down, so an opaque image, color, browser or other source above the video can cover it. Confirm that the Media Source is positioned and sized within the canvas. OBS explains visibility and stacking in its Sources Guide.
- Eye icon off: click it to show the source.
- Another source covers it: move the Media Source above that source in the list, or hide the covering source to test.
- Source appears misplaced or absent from the canvas: inspect its transform, position and size in the scene.
Check playback and looping
A clip that has finished can leave the source empty. In OBS Media Source properties, Loop defaults to off. OBS also documents Show nothing when playback ends as on by default; together, these settings can make a completed clip appear as a black or empty picture. Check the source’s playback options rather than assuming the video is still running. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these controls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Restart playback when source becomes active defaults to on, but it restarts a source when it becomes active; it does not make a clip loop continuously. For one local file intended to run repeatedly, enable Loop. Watch the preview through a complete playback cycle to verify that it actually returns to the beginning.
Choose Media Source or VLC Video for the content
| OBS source | Best fit | Important setup detail |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local file in a supported format | Loop defaults off. VLC is not required for this source. |
| VLC Video | A playlist or content needing VLC’s extended media support | VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Loop Playlist defaults on. |
Use VLC Video when you need a playlist or the built-in Media Source does not handle the file as needed. OBS says VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. Match the VLC architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For a single compatible local file, Media Source is the simpler option. Neither choice can be called universally more reliable without checking the specific file and system. Details are in OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Find where the picture first disappears
Compare the output at each stage rather than changing encoder settings at random. Record a short local sample while the source is visible in the preview, then compare it with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and the public watch page. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health and its messages, and checking that local archive files are growing; see YouTube live streaming tips.
- OBS preview is black: return to the file, visibility, stacking and playback checks above.
- Preview is correct but the local recording is not: investigate OBS output, scene composition or recording configuration.
- Preview and local recording are correct but YouTube is not: check the stream’s configuration and health in Live Control Room, then compare with the public watch page.
This comparison narrows down where to investigate; it does not by itself prove a particular cause. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers ingestion settings, but those settings do not diagnose a black source inside OBS.

Only investigate performance when the symptoms point there
If the source is visible in OBS but the output is choppy, delayed or missing frames, check whether the system is struggling to render or encode the scene. OBS notes that scene compositing and rendering use GPU resources. Reduce unnecessary sources and filters, and use media at an appropriately lower resolution when the stream does not need the media’s full resolution. The OBS encoding performance guide addresses performance symptoms such as overload and lag; a black frame alone does not establish GPU overload.
Protect a 24/7 stream’s recording and viewer controls
A live picture and an archived copy are separate concerns. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is under 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. For a continuous stream, plan for local recording and verify that the local file is growing rather than assuming the YouTube archive will cover the full broadcast. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Viewer rewind is a separate limitation: YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for live streams longer than 12 hours. That affects navigation through the broadcast, not whether OBS displays the source. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Encoder settings are not a black-source fix
If OBS preview and local recording show the picture but YouTube’s incoming stream does not, check that the encoder settings follow YouTube’s recommendations for the selected resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps recommended at 1080p/30fps and 6 Mbps at 720p/60fps. It lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of reliable operation or a remedy for an empty OBS source. Check the current YouTube encoder settings page for the recommendation matching your stream.

Common causes and fixes
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Black in OBS preview from the start | File path, file playback outside OBS, eye icon, source order and canvas position | Correct the file or scene issue, then test preview again. |
| Picture appears, then disappears after the clip ends | Loop is off or playback is configured to show nothing at the end | Enable Loop for a single repeating file and watch a full cycle. |
| Single file works, playlist does not | Whether the source supports the desired playlist workflow | Try VLC Video with VLC installed and matching OBS’s 64-bit architecture. |
| OBS preview is fine but output stutters or lags | GPU rendering/encoding workload and scene complexity | Remove unnecessary sources or filters and reduce media resolution if appropriate. |
| OBS preview and local recording are fine but YouTube is not | Live Control Room preview, stream health messages and encoder configuration | Follow YouTube’s stream-health guidance and compare with the public watch page. |
