To loop one video in an OBS YouTube Live stream, add it to a scene as a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS will play the file again when playback finishes. For a sequence of files, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist.
Loop one video with an OBS Media Source
- Create or select a scene. Choose the scene you intend to use for the live output.
- Add the video. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source.
- Select the file. In the source properties, choose the local video file. OBS documents support for
.mp4,.ts,.mov,.flv,.mkv,.avi,.gif, and.webmformats. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022. - Enable the loop. Tick Loop in the Media Source properties and confirm. This makes the file play again after playback completes.
- Check the preview and layer order. Make sure the video is visible. In the Sources dock, a source higher in the list appears above sources below it and can cover them; see the OBS Project’s Sources Guide, published January 11, 2022.
- Start your configured YouTube stream. This procedure covers the OBS media loop, not connecting or configuring a YouTube Live stream.
What the Media Source playback settings do
Loop
Loop repeats the file after it reaches the end. It is the setting to use when you want one video to play continuously.
Restart playback when source becomes active
This is a separate setting. It restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. Use it when you want playback to begin again on source activation; it does not replace Loop for repeating a file at its end. OBS describes both controls in its Media Sources documentation.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
For several files played in sequence, add an OBS VLC Video source, select the media files, and enable Loop Playlist. That option starts the sequence again after the playlist runs out of files. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; VLC Video is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with VLC required on all three.

Common problems and fixes
The video does not appear in the preview
Confirm that the Media Source is enabled and that the selected file is the one you intended to use. Check the Sources dock: a source above the video may be covering it. Move the Media Source higher in the list if it should appear above that layer.
The video plays once and stops
Open the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is enabled. Restart playback when source becomes active is not the end-of-file repeat control.

The playlist source is missing
Install VLC, then make sure its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
The playlist stops after the last file
Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. This repeats the sequence after it runs out of media files.

What this OBS procedure does not establish
The OBS documentation cited here explains how sources play and layer in a scene. It does not establish whether a YouTube account is eligible to stream, what current YouTube Live limits apply, or whether you have the rights to broadcast particular media. Check YouTube’s current requirements and make sure you have permission to use the content before streaming it.
