Choose the Digital Edition if you are happy downloading games and do not need disc playback. PlayStation says performance is the same apart from the drive; the right choice comes down to your library, media habits, local bundle prices and the exact console model.
What is different between the PS5 Digital and Disc versions?
The disc-equipped PS5 can play supported PS5 and PS4 game discs as well as digital games. The Digital Edition has no installed drive and gets games through PlayStation Store; it cannot read Blu-ray game discs. PlayStation’s launch-era FAQ described the drive as the only difference between those consoles, and says their performance is the same. Do not choose one expecting better graphics, frame rates or loading performance.
Current specifications can vary by region and model revision. For example, PlayStation’s current Canada comparison lists a 1 TB disc-equipped console and an 825 GB Digital Edition. Those figures are not universal: check the local listing and the exact bundle before buying. PlayStation Canada PS5 comparison
Can you play PS4 discs on a PS5 Digital Edition?
No. A PS4 game disc needs a PS5 with a disc drive; the Digital Edition cannot use the disc to install or play the game. If you own physical PS4 games, choose a drive-equipped PS5 or verify whether you can access those titles digitally. PlayStation’s November 2020 FAQ said more than 99% of its 4,000-plus PS4 games could be played on either PS5 version, but that is a historical compatibility figure, not a current count of the catalog. Compatibility does not remove the disc requirement for physical copies. PlayStation 5: The Ultimate FAQ (November 2020)

What can the PS5 disc drive play besides games?
PlayStation lists support for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs on its detachable-drive product page. That makes a drive-equipped console useful if you watch movies on physical media. A Digital Edition without an add-on drive cannot play those discs. PlayStation Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition later?
Yes, but only for compatible newer Digital Edition model groups. PlayStation lists the separately sold CFI-ZDD1 drive for CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition groups, and its US setup guidance also covers the CFI-7000 group. The UK product page lists PS5 Pro as compatible as well. Do not assume the drive works with every older Digital Edition: check the console’s model number against the official accessory page for your region. Pairing the drive with a compatible console during setup requires an internet connection. PlayStation support: Set up a Disc Drive with a PS5 console

How to decide which PS5 is right for you
- Choose the disc version if you own PS4 or PS5 game discs, want to borrow or collect physical games, or need to play supported Blu-ray or DVD movies.
- Choose the Digital Edition if you are committed to downloads and do not need to read game or movie discs.
- Compare local prices before deciding on cost. Check same-date, same-region console bundles and the prices of games you actually want. There is no universal price gap or guaranteed lifetime saving: physical and digital prices vary.
- Check storage and model details. Capacity varies across regional listings and revisions; confirm the specification for the specific console and bundle you are considering.
- Consider an add-on drive only after checking compatibility. A supported Slim Digital Edition can gain disc playback with the separately sold drive, but that adds a purchase and requires online pairing during setup.
PlayStation’s UK accessory page also states that newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase in digital format only from January 2028, while discs for games released before then can continue to be played on the console. That notice is specific to the UK page; do not treat it as a worldwide policy without a corresponding local announcement. PlayStation UK Disc Drive page
