A low-power mini PC can run OBS for a YouTube stream, but no preset can guarantee that an unspecified machine and internet connection will stay live around the clock. Start at 720p30 with H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate; then test the actual PC, content, and connection before relying on it. If the stream is a prerecorded loop and you do not want a computer running at home, a cloud option such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
Start with a conservative OBS configuration
For a standard SDR stream, YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. YouTube recommends RTMPS. H.264 is a practical baseline when the mini PC’s supported codecs are unknown; if OBS and the machine offer another supported encoder, test it rather than assuming it will perform better. YouTube’s encoder settings list the protocol, codec, and output recommendations.
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280×720 at 30 fps | A modest output to evaluate first on a low-power system; use a higher output only if the device and connection sustain it. |
| Video codec | H.264, unless a supported alternative works better in testing | Codec support and performance vary by device and encoder. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube lists constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 | This is YouTube’s recommended rate, not the minimum. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube lists these as recommended advanced audio settings; budget for audio in addition to video. |
| Other video properties | Progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames | These are among YouTube’s recommended advanced settings. |
In OBS, open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Open Settings → Video to choose the base and output resolution and frame rate. Labels and available encoder choices can differ by OBS version, operating system, and hardware. For a guided starting point, OBS recommends Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard; review its result against YouTube’s recommendations and your PC’s capabilities. See the OBS hardware encoding guide and OBS system requirements.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Use the row that matches the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following rates are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended video bitrates; they do not include the separate audio bitrate.

| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of good results on every encoder or network. At 720p30, H.264’s 3 Mbps is a minimum; the recommended rate is 8 Mbps. At 1080p30, the minimum is 5 Mbps and the recommended rate is 14 Mbps. Do not treat a minimum as the ideal target simply because a mini PC is low-power.
When to use 720p30
Try 720p30 first if the content remains clear at that size or if the PC struggles with a larger output. It reduces processing and network demands compared with 1080p or 60 fps. Use the recommended bitrate for the selected codec where the connection can support it.

When to move to 1080p or 60 fps
Higher resolution can preserve more detail, and 60 fps can make motion look smoother, but both can increase encoding and upload demands. A game feed with fast motion may benefit from a higher frame rate more than a mostly static scene. Test the actual material and step down if OBS or YouTube reports instability. YouTube’s figures above distinguish each supported output and codec; select the matching row rather than borrowing a rate from another format. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings if its published table changes.
Reduce the mini PC’s encoding and scene workload
Try supported hardware encoding
If OBS offers a hardware encoder supported by the mini PC, test it first: hardware encoding generally shifts work away from the CPU to a specialized component. Performance, quality, and codec availability vary with the processor or graphics hardware and its generation, so check the picture and stream health under realistic load. If no suitable hardware encoder is available, use software encoding only at a configuration the CPU can sustain. OBS explains the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide; its system requirements page notes that capability depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Keep scenes simple
Use only the sources, filters, transitions, and animated elements the stream needs. Scene compositing consumes GPU resources; unnecessary visual work can leave less capacity for encoding. If OBS cannot keep up, reduce scene complexity or output demands and test again. OBS’s performance guidance covers ways to reduce GPU load.
Make sure the internet connection has room to spare
Measure sustained upload capacity, not just the speed advertised by your provider. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Include audio in that total: for example, an H.264 720p30 video stream at the recommended 8 Mbps plus 128 kbps stereo audio needs more than 8 Mbps of upload capacity before accounting for the recommended headroom. A wired Ethernet connection is preferable for streaming; Wi-Fi interference or an unstable network path can cause dropped frames even when a speed test looks adequate. OBS’s dropped frames guide discusses connection instability and bitrate exceeding available capacity.

Configure the YouTube stream key safely
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and use the stream setup details to connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the stream key provided by YouTube. Exact labels may vary with account setup and software versions. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on stream or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement. Start a private or unlisted test before making a continuous stream public.
For ongoing streams, use material you have the rights to show and hear. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it contains copyrighted material. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies are separate from whether a live encoder connection works; a stream being technically live does not establish that its content meets platform rules. Check YouTube’s live encoder guidance and the relevant current policy pages in YouTube Help before choosing content.

Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended
- Build a representative scene. Include the same sources, filters, overlays, movement, and audio you intend to use during the real stream.
- Set the target output. Start at 720p30 if suitable, select a codec the system supports, and use the matching YouTube bitrate row, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Run an unlisted test. Use YouTube Studio’s stream health messages and OBS statistics while representative video and audio are playing.
- Watch for symptoms. Look for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, overheating or shutdowns, and warnings in YouTube’s stream health panel.
- Adjust one factor at a time. Reduce scene complexity or output demands, check the network, or try another supported encoder; then repeat the test.
- Recheck after changes. Updates, different scenes, warmer operating conditions, or network changes can alter performance.
YouTube advises testing with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast and monitoring stream health. Neither YouTube nor OBS specifies a test duration that proves a low-power mini PC will remain live indefinitely. A successful short test is useful, but it is not certification of 24/7 uptime.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames in OBS | Unstable connection or bitrate beyond available upload capacity | Use Ethernet, check sustained upload capacity and headroom, and reduce bitrate or output demands if needed. |
| Encoder overload or stuttering | Encoder, output settings, or scene/GPU workload | Try a supported hardware encoder, simplify scenes, lower resolution or frame rate, and retest. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Bitrate, connection, keyframe interval, or mismatch between selected output and configuration | Match settings to the correct codec/resolution/frame-rate row; use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then check the network. |
| No stream appears in YouTube | Incorrect service or stream key, or stream not started in OBS | Verify the YouTube Studio stream setup and OBS stream settings; reset an exposed key. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | Audio source selection or encoder settings | Check OBS audio meters and routing, then verify AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz as a starting point. |
| PC stops or becomes unstable over time | Thermal or system stability issue not resolved by bitrate changes | Check cooling, power, system logs, and whether the device remains stable under sustained load; no generic preset can diagnose a specific mini PC. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to loop prerecorded video rather than stream a camera or operate a live OBS scene, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Its three-step workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
