To prevent clipping, lower the music at the earliest controllable point, keep OBS peaks below 0 dBFS, and put an OBS Limiter last in the music source’s filter chain. Then record and listen to a test using the actual videos and transitions you plan to stream. Changing YouTube’s audio bitrate will not fix a signal that is already clipping.
Find where the distortion starts
Follow the music from playback to the OBS meter and then to a test recording. If it already sounds distorted before OBS receives it, lowering an OBS fader may make the meter look safer without removing the distortion.
- Identify the playback source. If the loop plays in a browser or media player, start by lowering that application’s volume. If OBS captures all system sound, check the operating system’s volume mixer and the OBS desktop-audio source. If the video is an OBS Media Source or another source with its own volume control, adjust that source.
- Listen at more than one point. Compare the sound at the player or application with OBS’s audio monitoring and a local test recording. OBS recommends checking levels at the device or application and again as OBS receives them: OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Lower the earliest stage that is too loud. Reduce the application, system, or source level before reaching for OBS gain or compression. Do not boost a source that is already distorted upstream.
Use OBS meters to check the loudest parts
Play the loudest passage in the loop—not only a quiet opening—and watch the music source’s peak meter and peak-hold indicator. The OBS Mixer Guide says the peak hold retains the loudest reading for 20 seconds and advises keeping background music in the green area. Colors are a practical warning, not a universal loudness target; use your ears and the recorded result as well.
OBS’s technical guide describes 0 dBFS as the digital ceiling: audio in a final stream or recording must remain below it to avoid clipping. It gives an Alignment Level of -20 dBFS and a Permitted Maximum Level of -9 dBFS, with the latter providing margin for meter and alignment uncertainty. Those figures are OBS meter guidance, not a requirement to master music to a particular integrated LUFS value. OBS also notes that its input-level indicators are before the volume fader but behind source filters, so where a meter sits in the chain matters. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.

If the meter reaches the red or the sound hits the ceiling, lower the source and check whether distortion is already present earlier in the chain. Do not compensate by raising another stage.
Add a limiter as the final peak safeguard
- In OBS, open Filters for the music source.
- Add the Limiter filter.
- Move it to the end of that source’s filter chain, after any compressor or other processing that could change the level.
- Start with OBS’s documented default threshold of -6.00 dB, then listen to the recording and adjust if needed. It is a default, not a mandatory setting for every source.
OBS describes the limiter as a way to prevent a signal from peaking above 0 dB and causing clipping or distortion, and says it should be last in the filter chain: OBS Limiter Filter. A limiter is a ceiling for peaks that reach it cleanly; it cannot repair distortion already baked into a file or introduced by an overloaded application, system output, or earlier hardware stage. If it is reducing the level constantly or the result sounds distorted or unnaturally squeezed, lower the input instead.

Use compression only for a specific need
A compressor reduces louder portions and can make changing levels more even. OBS says it is typically placed at or near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain or ducking mode can use a microphone source to lower desktop audio while someone speaks. That can help when a host talks over music; unattended looping music does not need ducking by default.
Compression is not a substitute for sensible source levels or a final peak ceiling. Be especially careful with output gain after compression: it can raise peaks again. Keep the limiter last if you use both. See OBS Compressor Filter.

Record a representative test before going live
- Run the same loop, playback route, OBS sources, and filter chain intended for the broadcast.
- Include the loudest passages, transitions between videos, and the point where the playlist or loop restarts.
- Record locally in OBS, then listen to the file—not just the live meters. Check for crackling, harshness, sudden level changes, and distortion at transitions.
- If possible, rehearse privately or unlisted and check YouTube’s stream health while the test is running. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event: YouTube live encoder settings and troubleshooting.
A clean meter reading is useful, but it does not reveal every upstream fault. A recording lets you check what the full chain actually produced.
Do not confuse audio bitrate with clipping
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio, a 128 Kbps stereo audio bitrate in advanced settings, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo. Bitrate and sample rate are encoding choices; they do not lower peaks in the signal entering the encoder. Raising the audio bitrate cannot repair clipping caused by a too-hot source. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings for its current requirements.

There is no established OBS-to-YouTube Live integrated loudness or LUFS target in these cited guides. Do not treat a commonly repeated LUFS figure as an OBS clipping requirement.

Keep music rights separate from audio settings
Clean audio settings do not grant permission to stream a music video. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream to avoid problems such as copyright strikes: YouTube for Artists: use music in your videos. A video being publicly playable or suitable for looping does not itself establish live-stream rights.
