For a 24/7 YouTube nature stream made with OBS, choose settings for the codec, resolution and frame rate you can sustain continuously: use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS when supported, and YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for your chosen format. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Leave about 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond your total stream bitrate, test representative footage and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A stream running longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube, so record locally if you need a dependable copy.

Recommended OBS settings for a 24/7 nature stream

These are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain an unattended stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. Match the bitrate to the codec and output format using YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Setting Starting point What to check
Output resolution and frame rate Choose the format you intend viewers to receive; use 30 fps unless the material benefits from smoother 60 fps motion and your system can sustain it. In OBS, set the stream output resolution and frame rate. Higher frame rates can increase system load.
Video codec H.264 is a practical baseline; HEVC and AV1 are also supported by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS. Encoder availability depends on your hardware and software. Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec you actually select.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) Use the same total bitrate when checking upload headroom.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Ingest protocol RTMPS when supported Use the protocol offered for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
Audio Stereo AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps stereo are listed in YouTube’s advanced guidance. Listen for clipping, silence, abrupt edits and unwanted background noise during a representative test.

For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are ingest recommendations, not proof that your computer’s encoder or connection can maintain the settings. Check YouTube’s current table for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs rather than carrying one bitrate across formats. The recommendations and interface details can change; the official pages cited here were accessed October 3, 2026.

Set up OBS and test the actual stream

  1. Choose the output format. In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose the output resolution and FPS you want to send. If you change from 30 to 60 fps, test the system under load before relying on it continuously; 60 fps can demand more from the computer.
  2. Configure the streaming encoder. Open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed to expose encoder controls, then select an available encoder and configure CBR. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS labels and encoder options can vary by version and device.
  3. Set bitrate from YouTube’s codec-specific table. For an H.264 1080p30 stream, use YouTube’s 10 Mbps recommendation as the reference; for H.264 1080p60, use 17 Mbps. Consult the live table for other combinations.
  4. Set audio and protocol. Choose stereo AAC or MP3 as appropriate for RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo. Select RTMPS if YouTube and your encoder offer it.
  5. Connect the stream key securely. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS under Settings > Stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
  6. Test with real content. Run a private or unlisted test using the intended nature footage and ambient audio. Check YouTube’s stream health, OBS encoder and network status, audio levels, and playback on another device. Look for dropped frames, buffering, encoding overload, audio clipping and loop seams before making the feed public.
  7. Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends roughly 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate. Account for other streams or uploads on the same connection; an internet speed result alone does not establish stable capacity over a full day.

Build a reliable unattended nature feed

Make the video and audio loop cleanly

Assemble and preview the footage and ambient audio as a continuous sequence before sending it to OBS. Listen at the start and end of each clip and across the loop boundary for gaps, clicks, sudden volume changes or a conspicuous reset. Keep audio levels consistent and ensure that the picture does not unexpectedly go black between files. Test the playlist or media source in the same way it will run during the live broadcast.

Use OBS reconnect as recovery, not as a guarantee

OBS has an automatic reconnect option in its advanced settings. It can help OBS reconnect after a connection loss, but it cannot replace reliable power, internet service or monitoring, and it does not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime. Leave advanced defaults alone unless you have a specific reason to change them, then test any changes before depending on them.

Plan for archives and DVR separately

YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a complete replay from a single continuous feed that runs beyond that threshold. If you need a copy, enable local recording and verify that the recording file exists and continues to grow during the stream. Storage needs depend on your recording settings and how long you retain files; there is no universal drive capacity for every stream.

Rights and YouTube live-stream obligations

You need the rights to both the nature footage and ambient audio. Check that each license permits live streaming, and separately confirm whether it allows YouTube archiving, replay publication and any later reuse you intend. A license for personal viewing or general online use should not be assumed to cover a public live broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance advises creators to make sure audio and video rights are in order. Copyright claims can affect a live stream or its archive, so resolve permissions before going live.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers buffer: Reduce the bitrate or output format, check for competing uploads and devices on the connection, and test again. Keep about 20% upload headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate.
  • OBS reports dropped frames: This often points to a network path that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Check the connection and router, reduce bitrate if needed, and retest using the actual stream content.
  • OBS reports encoding lag or overloaded encoding: Lower the output resolution or frame rate, or choose an encoder your system can handle. Verify performance through a representative test before leaving the feed unattended.
  • The stream disconnects: Check power, the internet connection and YouTube’s stream status. Automatic reconnect may recover a dropped connection, but investigate repeated failures rather than assuming reconnect makes the setup dependable.
  • Ambient audio is silent, distorted or out of sync: Check the active audio source and meters in OBS, confirm the intended device or media source is selected, and listen to a test playback. Adjust levels to avoid clipping and verify the sound through the full loop.
  • No complete YouTube replay appears: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when a complete copy matters, and confirm its file is growing during the broadcast.
  • The stream key stops working or may have been exposed: Confirm that OBS uses the key for the selected YouTube stream. Reset a key that was revealed publicly, then replace it in OBS.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded nature videos without keeping OBS and a home computer online, StreamNeo runs the feed from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
