YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and YouTube recommends RTMPS. However, the official YouTube guidance cited here does not establish that VLC can reliably send a looping playlist to YouTube over its current RTMPS ingest. So the dependable answer is: verify VLC’s current protocol and playlist behavior before relying on it for a 24/7 broadcast; do not assume an unverified VLC setup will work continuously.
What you need to know before setting up VLC
A 24/7 playlist has two separate requirements: a source that plays and sends the playlist continuously, and a YouTube Live event that receives the feed. YouTube documents how to connect an encoder, but its current encoder instructions do not verify VLC-specific menus, settings, looping behavior, or automatic recovery. This guide therefore gives the verified YouTube workflow and the settings to check, without inventing VLC steps.
- Compatibility to confirm: The encoder must support YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, and the playlist source must loop and continue sending video and audio as intended.
- Continuous operation to confirm: Check what happens after a network interruption, source failure, or playlist ending. YouTube’s general guidance does not establish VLC’s reconnect or recovery behavior.
- Event duration: “24/7” describes the desired operating schedule; it does not mean a single event will archive without limit. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but the cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams.
Set up the YouTube encoder connection
- Create or schedule a live stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream. For a scheduled event, configure its details and start time there.
- Get the connection credentials: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as a credential that connects an encoder to the stream; do not share it publicly.
- Choose RTMPS when the encoder supports it: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room rather than guessing an endpoint. YouTube cautions that not every encoder supports RTMPS.
- Configure the encoder: Enter the URL and key in an encoder that supports the selected protocol. VLC-specific instructions are not included here because the cited official YouTube materials do not establish a verified VLC configuration for this workflow.
- Start the feed and check preview: Start sending the encoder feed. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check the picture and sound, then select Go live.
- End the broadcast cleanly: When you intend to stop, stop sending from the encoder and end the stream through Live Control Room as directed by YouTube.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its guide to encrypting a stream with RTMPS.
Match the encoder output to YouTube’s ingest settings
Use YouTube’s published settings for the output resolution and frame rate you actually plan to send. There is no single bitrate that fits every stream: the recommended value varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings.
- Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval; it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Select the relevant row in YouTube’s settings table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Avoid treating a bitrate for one output format as a universal value.
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular VLC version or output module exposes each setting or can deliver it correctly. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance, then verify the actual output in Live Control Room.
Test the playlist before depending on it
- Test the complete intended playlist, including its transition from the final item back to the first.
- Check that the feed reaches Live Control Room and that the preview has both picture and audio.
- Review stream health and audio/video quality before going live and while operating the stream.
- Confirm the event is accessible to viewers using the intended visibility and schedule.
- Test interruption and recovery behavior rather than assuming the encoder will reconnect or resume the playlist automatically.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream. Its advice is general encoder guidance, not a VLC validation. Read YouTube’s live streaming tips and streaming tips.

Plan around archives and long-running events
YouTube states that all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving beyond that duration, so do not treat a continuous 24/7 event as a guaranteed, indefinitely archived recording. If an archive matters, plan how you will preserve the source recording and verify the event and archive behavior that applies to your setup.
Common problems and what to check
- No signal in Live Control Room: Confirm the encoder is using the URL and key for the intended event. Check that the chosen ingest protocol is supported by the encoder and that the endpoint came from Live Control Room.
- RTMPS connection fails: YouTube recommends RTMPS, but warns that an encoder may not support it. Verify protocol support in current documentation for the specific encoder version and output module; do not substitute an assumed endpoint.
- Preview appears, but audio or video is wrong: Check the selected codecs, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s published settings. Inspect the preview and stream health before going live.
- The playlist stops or fails to repeat: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions do not establish VLC’s playlist-loop behavior. Verify the behavior with the precise VLC version, operating system, and output configuration before scheduling a long event.
- The stream drops and does not resume: Recovery depends on the encoder and operating setup; the cited YouTube materials do not confirm VLC’s reconnection behavior. Test a controlled interruption and determine how you will restore the feed.
- No automatic archive for a long broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition covers streams under 12 hours. Do not assume that a longer event will be archived automatically.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube playlist to keep running without leaving VLC or a computer on at home, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
