To loop one prerecorded video in OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. To replay several videos in order, add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using its stream URL and key, and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | Repeat setting | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video file | Media Source | Loop | Select the file in the source properties. |
| Several local files, in a chosen order | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed; use the same architecture as OBS. |
| Send either source to YouTube Live | OBS encoder output | Configure YouTube connection | Use the stream URL and key for the intended event, and confirm the channel is eligible. |
OBS documents the Media Source and VLC Video controls in its Media Sources guide. Its VLC playlist source requires VLC. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Prepare YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is your first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and create or schedule the event. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key authorizes an encoder to send a feed; keep it private.
- Confirm the event settings. Choose the intended visibility and schedule, then keep Live Control Room open for the preview. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating the stream and connecting an encoder.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC that matches OBS. For example, if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source option is not available.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that should show the prerecorded program.
- Add the playlist source. In Sources, select +, choose VLC Video, and create the source.
- Add and arrange files. Add the local video files to the source playlist and set their order. Leave Loop Playlist enabled. Keep Shuffle off if you want playback in a fixed sequence.
- Check the scene. Confirm the video is visible and that its audio is present in the OBS mixer. Verify that the selected files are available on the computer running OBS.
For just one video
Instead of VLC Video, add a Media Source, browse to the local file, and enable Loop in its properties. This repeats one file; use VLC Video for an ordered playlist of multiple files.
Connect OBS and test before going public
- Configure the encoder connection. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if that integration is available, or enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Check that the picture and sound appear in YouTube Live Control Room. If appropriate, use an unlisted or otherwise controlled test event.
- Verify the loop in the preview. Let the playlist advance through its files and return to the beginning. This confirms the OBS source behavior as seen in the outgoing feed.
- Start the event in Live Control Room. Once the preview and audio are correct, start the scheduled broadcast there. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview before going live; see its encoder instructions.
Copyright, live rules, and archives
YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; it may remove or age-restrict content that violates them. Make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and soundtrack. The fact that a file plays in OBS does not establish that it is licensed for a public livestream. YouTube’s requirements are described in Get started with live streaming.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. Its encoder guidance also instructs creators to stop the encoder after ending an event.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing from Sources: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. If you installed VLC while OBS was open, restart OBS.
- The playlist does not repeat: Open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. If only one clip is repeating, check whether you added a Media Source instead.
- The files play in an unexpected order: Arrange the playlist explicitly and turn Shuffle off for fixed-order playback.
- OBS plays the video, but YouTube has no preview: Check the encoder connection separately from the local source. Confirm OBS is using the URL and key for the intended event, and that the channel is enabled to livestream.
- The YouTube preview has no sound: Check the source audio and OBS mixer, then confirm audio is present in the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
- The broadcast stops when unattended: A local playlist depends on the media files, playback computer, encoder, and internet connection continuing to operate. Test the complete setup and monitor stream audio and video quality; the OBS and YouTube setup instructions do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a home computer and connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video; it does not broadcast from a camera.
