To put a countdown in the actual YouTube Live broadcast before a prerecorded video loop, compose both in an encoder scene such as OBS: loop the video, layer a countdown source over it, then remove or hide that source when the countdown ends. YouTube’s built-in countdown is for Premieres, not a general countdown control for encoder-based Live streams.
Choose the right kind of countdown
“Countdown before a YouTube Live loop” can mean three different things. Pick based on whether the countdown must appear in the outgoing live video:
| Approach | What viewers see | Best fit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Premiere countdown | YouTube’s countdown theme, followed by a scheduled uploaded video | A synchronized release of a prerecorded video where a Premiere watch page and chat suit the event | It is not an overlay on an encoder-based Live stream, and the countdown theme is not part of the video afterward. YouTube Help: Customize your Premiere; YouTube Help: Premiere a new video |
| Scheduled Live trailer | A trailer on the scheduled Live stream’s watch page before the broadcast begins | A pre-show video for a channel eligible to use the feature | A trailer is separate from a countdown composited into the live feed. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings |
| Encoder countdown overlay | A countdown over the outgoing scene, then the looping video | An actual YouTube Live broadcast where the opening sequence must be in the live feed | Requires an encoder scene and a countdown source. OBS documentation covers media and text sources, but does not establish a built-in countdown timer widget. OBS Project: Sources Guide |
Build a countdown and looping scene in OBS
This method sends one composed scene—the countdown over the loop, then the unobstructed loop—from OBS to YouTube. You need a local video file for the loop and a separate countdown visual or timer source. OBS’s documented controls support looping media and layering sources; do not assume a native configurable countdown timer is included.
1. Prepare the loop and countdown source
- Choose the video file you want to repeat.
- Prepare the countdown as a video, graphic, text overlay, or another timer source you have verified. If it is a separate video, make sure it stops or can be hidden at zero so the loop beneath it is revealed.
- Decide how the countdown will end before going live: for example, switch to a scene without the countdown or hide its source. Test the transition so the countdown does not cover the loop after it reaches zero.
2. Add and loop the video in OBS
- In your OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Open the source properties and enable Loop. OBS describes this setting as repeating the file after playback completes. OBS Project: Media Sources
- If you want a playlist rather than one file, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for that source to appear.
3. Layer the countdown over the video
- Add the countdown source to the same scene and position it above the Media Source in the source stack.
- Check that the countdown is readable and does not obscure more of the loop than intended.
- Set up the zero point: hide the countdown source or switch to a scene that contains the loop without the countdown. OBS’s source guide documents media and customizable text sources, but not a native countdown timer widget; use an imported asset, script, or other timer source only if you have verified how it behaves.
4. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into OBS’s streaming settings, following YouTube’s encoder workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or the outgoing stream.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
5. Rehearse the handoff
Test the countdown reaching zero and the loop appearing without the countdown before a public event, using a private or unlisted setup if appropriate. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, previewing in Live Control Room, and checking audio and video. These are YouTube recommendations, not technical requirements. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

Use YouTube’s countdown or trailer when the feed does not need an overlay
For a Premiere countdown
A Premiere is a scheduled release of an uploaded video, rather than an encoder-based Live broadcast. YouTube’s documented flow is to upload the video, schedule it as public, select Set as Premiere, then choose Set up Premiere to pick the countdown theme and length. The countdown begins at the scheduled time for the chosen duration; after it ends, viewers watch the video together. The countdown theme is not included in the video itself. See Customize your Premiere and Premiere a new video.
For a scheduled Live trailer
YouTube’s Live trailer feature plays a trailer on the scheduled stream’s watch page before the broadcast begins; it is not documented as an overlay in the live feed. YouTube Help lists eligibility as more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, and a trailer length of 15 seconds to 3 minutes. Check current Studio controls and eligibility, since platform requirements can change. See Manage live stream settings and Schedule video publish time.

Plan the event around the countdown
Scheduling a Live stream makes it appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt into a notification for when it is about to begin. If you want the countdown itself in the live feed, make sure the encoder is already sending the composed scene and that its transition to the loop is ready; a scheduled watch page or trailer alone does not put a countdown over that feed.
