How to Loop an MP4 in VLC and Send It to YouTube Live

VLC can loop a VLM broadcast list, but official docs do not verify a complete direct VLC-to-YouTube Live setup. Here’s how to test safely.

You can use VLC’s documented VLM broadcast loop to restart a video input list, and YouTube accepts live feeds from encoder software. But official documentation does not provide a complete, verified setup for looping an MP4 in VLC and sending that continuous output directly to YouTube Live. Treat a direct VLC setup as version-dependent experimentation—not a guaranteed recipe—and test it privately before relying on it.

What you need to know before setting this up

There are two separate pieces: VLC can stream media it can read to a network output, and YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a stream URL and key from encoder software. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation describes those capabilities, but the reviewed official sources do not establish a complete VLC-to-YouTube configuration, including compatible output protocol, mux, and codec settings for every version and operating system.

VLC’s ordinary playback repeat control is not the same as a VLM broadcast loop. VideoLAN documents VLM’s loop option as restarting a broadcast’s input list when playback reaches its last input. It does not establish that clicking Repeat in the normal player keeps an outbound stream alive.

If you need a dependable event or continuous channel, use an encoder workflow you can test end to end. YouTube’s documented process is to enter the stream URL and key in encoder software, start the encoder, inspect the preview in Live Control Room, and then go live. VLC’s general output and VLM loop features are building blocks, not proof that a particular direct configuration will work.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the stream

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before troubleshooting VLC. Requirements and interface labels can change, so confirm the current Live Control Room guidance for your account.

Prepare a representative test

  • Choose the MP4 you intend to broadcast and verify that VLC can play it locally, including its audio.
  • Use a test segment with representative motion and sound. A static or silent clip may hide problems that appear in the actual program.
  • Check your available upload connection against the video bitrate you plan to send, with headroom for a stable connection.
  • Use a private or unlisted test stream before broadcasting publicly, and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.

YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Loop the MP4 with VLC’s documented VLM mechanism

VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 VLM documentation describes a broadcast as media with inputs, output, and options. Its loop option restarts the broadcast input list when the final input ends. This is the documented VLC loop behavior relevant to a broadcast; it is not a promise that a normal player repeat toggle loops network output.

VLM can therefore address the repeat part of the task, but VLC’s documentation does not provide a verified end-to-end recipe for connecting that loop directly to YouTube Live. The exact configuration depends on VLC’s version, operating system, output protocol, mux, and encoding settings. Do not assume an unverified command or GUI sequence will work with YouTube’s ingest system.

Connect an encoder to YouTube Live

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create a new stream or select the scheduled stream you want to use.
  2. Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields. If the encoder supports RTMPS, YouTube recommends it; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Copy the exact RTMPS URL displayed in Live Control Room rather than guessing or substituting one.
  3. Protect the key. YouTube treats a stream key like a password. Do not share it or publish a screenshot containing it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset keys.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that the video and audio arrive correctly in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the feed preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
  5. Monitor the stream. Check stream health and watch and listen for problems throughout the test. A successful local VLC preview alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a compatible feed.
  6. End the broadcast cleanly. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Set video and audio output appropriately

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio, with constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee that an unverified VLC output configuration will connect.

Choose the bitrate row that matches the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. The following are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations:

These figures are YouTube guidance for the listed H.264 output modes. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate; if it cannot, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and test again. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings page for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Confirm the stream URL and key were copied from the correct Live Control Room stream and entered in the matching encoder fields. Check that the key has not been reset and that the encoder supports the selected protocol.
  • The video plays once and stops: Ordinary VLC playback repeat is not documented as keeping an outbound broadcast alive. Use the VLM broadcast loop behavior for the looping part, then verify that the network output continues after the input list ends.
  • The feed arrives but video or audio is missing: Check the encoder’s codec, mux, and audio configuration against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Test with a clip that includes both motion and audio, and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
  • The stream is unstable or stream health is poor: Compare the selected bitrate with the available upload connection. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the output, then run another test.
  • The direct VLC configuration still will not connect: The reviewed official documentation does not provide a complete supported VLC-to-YouTube recipe. Confirm the output settings for your exact VLC build and YouTube ingest path, or use another encoder whose connection you can test end to end.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder before streaming again.
