To stream a looping animated background to YouTube Live, add the video file to an OBS scene as a Media Source, turn on Loop, then send OBS’s output to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the full loop and check stream health before relying on it live.

Before you set up OBS

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says creators must be at least 16 years old. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Have the animated video saved locally in a format OBS supports. OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
  • Make sure the computer and internet connection can sustain the selected output settings. YouTube does not publish a minimum computer specification in the cited setup guidance.

Set up a looping background in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the broadcast, or select the scene you plan to use.
  2. Add the video. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, name the source, and choose the local animated video file.
  3. Enable the repeat. In the Media Source properties, check Loop. OBS restarts the file after it reaches the end. The loop is controlled by this source setting, not by YouTube.
  4. Fit the image to the scene. Use the preview to position and resize the source. Check it at the output aspect ratio you intend to stream; confirm the animation fills the frame as desired and that no important detail is cropped.
  5. Check audio. If the file contains sound, decide whether it should be part of the broadcast. Inspect OBS’s audio mixer and mute the source if that audio is not intended.
  6. Test the transition. Let the video reach its end and restart. Check that the return to the beginning is acceptable and that the source does not disappear or show an unwanted gap.

See the OBS Media Sources documentation for source behavior and the OBS sources guide for positioning and resizing sources.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to run.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If OBS asks for a server URL, use the stream URL supplied in YouTube Studio. Interface labels can change; use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions if your screen differs.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Reset it in YouTube Studio if you think it has been exposed.
  5. Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before treating the broadcast as ready for viewers.

YouTube explains the encoder connection and stream-key handling in its live encoder setup guide.

Choose output settings your connection can hold

YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Choose the resolution, frame rate and bitrate together: a higher output setting requires a connection and computer that can sustain more data. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not a guarantee of a stable stream.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings to choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate. Run a speed test and leave upload capacity unused: YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Actual available bandwidth can fluctuate, so verify the chosen settings with a test rather than relying on a single speed result.

YouTube says it will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose, but that does not remove the need to configure a sustainable output and check the preview. YouTube also transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats; your priority is a reliable, correctly configured input feed.

Test and monitor the broadcast

  • Test ahead of the intended broadcast, using the actual animated background and the final output settings.
  • Watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview for framing, motion, audio and stream-health warnings.
  • Observe at least one complete loop so you know how the end-to-start transition looks.
  • Keep an eye on the stream while it is live. A loop setting repeats the file, but it does not ensure that the computer, encoder or internet connection will remain available.

For a non-interactive background stream, latency is a separate choice from looping. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering; it may matter less when you do not need to interact with viewers in real time. See YouTube’s streaming guidance for the latency options and operational advice.

Fix common problems

The video stops instead of repeating

Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked. Then let the file finish during a test; the setting restarts playback at the end of the source file.

The background is cropped, stretched or leaves empty space

Check the source’s size and position in the OBS preview and compare it with the intended output aspect ratio. Resize and reposition the source, then inspect the whole frame at the output resolution before going live.

YouTube does not receive the OBS feed

Confirm that OBS is pointed at the correct YouTube stream and that the stream URL and key match the selected event. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.

The preview buffers or stream health is poor

Test a lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate that your connection can maintain. Recheck upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; a speed test result does not guarantee steady bandwidth throughout a broadcast.

The channel cannot start a live stream

Check channel verification and live-streaming standing, and allow for first-time activation to take up to 24 hours. Review YouTube’s eligibility requirements.

Respect copyright and YouTube channel rules

A looping background is still content you are broadcasting. Use animation and audio you created or have permission to stream, and check applicable copyright rules before going live. Repeating a video does not grant rights to its music or imagery, nor does it guarantee eligibility for monetization; YouTube evaluates channels under its own policies. Review YouTube’s monetization policies and the copyright safety checklist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer or OBS running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues from the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
