Use the concat demuxer when the files are compatible for packet-level joining; use the concat filter when you need to decode, normalize and re-encode them. Neither method guarantees a black-frame-free cut for every source or YouTube playback condition, so inspect the joins in the finished output.
Why a video switch can show a black frame
Switching files is not automatically the same as producing a seamless transition. The inputs may differ in codec parameters, timestamps, frame rate, resolution, audio layout or duration. A boundary can also include packets or decoded frames around a specified edit point, especially with non-intra-frame codecs. A concat manifest’s inpoint or outpoint therefore does not, by itself, guarantee a clean visual cut.
FFmpeg’s documentation describes ways to concatenate media; it does not promise that a particular command will prevent black frames in every YouTube stream. The exact cause in a specific stream may involve the encoded output, timestamps, GOP structure, audio continuity, ingest, platform processing or playback state. Treat those as diagnostic possibilities, not established causes for your setup.
Choose the right concat method

These methods are for a fixed sequence. The cited FFmpeg material does not establish a particular runtime controller for interactive, on-demand source switching.

Inspect the inputs before building the output
Check each file with ffprobe before choosing a workflow. Compare dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, time base, video codec parameters, whether audio is present, sample rate, channel layout and duration. This is a diagnostic step: it identifies mismatches that affect whether packet-level joining is appropriate and what must be normalized for a filter workflow.
Also check the FFmpeg version installed on the machine that will run the stream. The online FFmpeg documentation follows the newest revision and is regenerated regularly, so an option shown online may not match an older local build. Use ffmpeg -version and verify syntax against the documentation for your installed version. FFmpeg documentation

Option 1: Join compatible files with the concat demuxer
Use this branch only when the inputs are compatible for packet-level joining and the target format supports it. Create a plain-text manifest with one file entry per video, in playback order:
file 'video-a.mp4'
file 'video-b.mp4'
file 'video-c.mp4'Save it as playlist.txt. Paths containing special characters or apostrophes need appropriate escaping; keep the manifest syntax valid for the local FFmpeg version. Do not add guessed duration directives to force a cut. The demuxer supports duration and edit-point directives, but its documentation warns that inaccurate duration values can cause artifacts. For compatible files, a basic output-generation command is:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy joined.mp4This maps the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream, then copies encoded packets rather than re-encoding. The -safe 0 option permits paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; use it only with a manifest you control. This example assumes a compatible playlist and an MP4 output that can contain the joined streams. It is not a universal fix: if the codecs, parameters, timing or boundaries are unsuitable, copying packets can preserve or expose the problem rather than repair it.

Option 2: Normalize and concatenate with the concat filter
Choose the concat filter if sources differ or packet-level joining gives boundary problems. Decode the inputs, normalize the properties that need to match, concatenate the resulting video and audio streams, then encode one continuous output. The filter requires its segments to have matching stream structure; account explicitly for files with no audio or different audio layouts rather than assuming every input has the same streams.
A schematic two-file filter workflow, when both files have one video and one audio stream, is:

-map "[v]" -map "[a]" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4This example deliberately assumes two inputs, each with one video and one stereo audio stream. It normalizes video to 1920×1080, 30 fps and yuv420p, and audio to 48 kHz stereo; those are example targets, not required YouTube settings. Replace them with targets suitable for your material and delivery plan. If a file lacks audio, has multiple streams or needs different treatment, adjust the filtergraph rather than copying this command unchanged. Re-encoding makes the stream properties consistent but costs processing time and may reduce quality. Use adequate encoder settings for the intended output; inspect timestamps and transitions in the resulting file before sending it to YouTube Live.

Without explicit mapping, FFmpeg applies automatic stream-selection rules. In the cases documented in its manual, it may choose the highest-resolution video stream and the audio stream with the greatest channel count. That may not be the video or audio you intend to publish. Use -map to select the desired streams, and when using a complex filtergraph, map each labeled output exactly once. - Generate the joined output first. Review the file locally before making it the live source.
- Inspect each join. Check several seconds before and after every transition for black frames, repeated or missing frames, unexpected pauses and audio gaps or clicks.
- Record or inspect the actual live output. Local playback cannot establish how a particular YouTube ingest and player will behave.
- Keep one continuous output process for the fixed sequence. The goal is to avoid ending one output and starting another at each file change; the concat workflow creates a continuous program for one encoder/mux output.
Common problems and fixes
- A black or frozen image appears at a join: Check input compatibility, timestamps and the actual frames around the boundary. If packet copying is unsuitable, normalize and re-encode through the concat filter; then recheck the output.
- Audio drops, clicks or changes unexpectedly: Compare audio presence, sample rate, channel layout and duration across files. Normalize them in the filter workflow and map the intended audio stream explicitly.
- The wrong video or audio is in the output: Add explicit
-mapoptions. FFmpeg’s automatic selection may choose a different stream than intended. - The demuxer reports timing or duration issues, or artifacts occur at cuts: Do not rely on estimated durations. Confirm actual file durations and edit points; switch to decoding, normalizing and filtering if packet-level joining is not reliable for the inputs.
- A filtergraph fails with stream or label errors: Make its stream structure match the available inputs, including audio presence, and map each labeled output exactly once.
- The online example uses an unavailable option: Check
ffmpeg -versionand consult documentation corresponding to the installed build; the online manual tracks a newer, changing revision.
YouTube Live and content checks
These FFmpeg concat approaches explain how to construct the continuous media output; they do not establish YouTube-specific ingest guarantees or account eligibility rules. Check the current YouTube Live interface and policies for your channel and stream setup. Use videos and audio you have the rights to stream, and assess whether prerecorded or reused material complies with the rules that apply to your channel. A clean technical join does not resolve copyright or monetization questions.
