You can turn prerecorded videos into a continuous YouTube Live feed by using FFmpeg to play and loop your files, an NVIDIA GPU’s NVENC hardware to encode the video, and RTMPS to send it to YouTube. NVENC handles encoding; it does not create a playlist, guarantee seamless transitions, or keep the whole system running if the process, computer, power, or network fails. Build and test each part separately before relying on the stream.

What you need—and what each part does

  • Video files and a playback plan: FFmpeg must be configured to advance through your recordings and repeat them if desired.
  • An NVIDIA GPU with the required encoder support: NVENC is dedicated video-encoding hardware, separate from CUDA cores. Supported codecs vary by GPU, so confirm the exact model and desired output codec in NVIDIA’s GPU support matrix. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide documents the FFmpeg integration and uses h264_nvenc for H.264.
  • FFmpeg: It reads and arranges the files, encodes the output, and sends the stream.
  • A reliable, sustained upload connection and a powered computer: Local encoding does not remove either dependency.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled: Use the stream key and ingest address shown for your stream in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.

NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide also shows CUDA-based decoding with -hwaccel cuda -hwaccel_output_format cuda for supported sources and builds. That optional path can keep decoded frames on the GPU and reduce transfers to system memory. You do not need GPU decoding or GPU filters to use NVENC for encoding.

Choose an output YouTube can ingest

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed 3 October 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to YouTube. Check its current live encoder settings before going live because this is a live help page with no displayed publication date.

For ordinary SDR output, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit settings; HDR uses different settings. Match the output to the source and the settings shown for your stream rather than applying HDR settings to SDR footage or assuming that a GPU’s support for a codec guarantees YouTube or viewer compatibility. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingest; HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion.

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate guidance

These are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended H.264 bitrates, recorded from its guidance as accessed 3 October 2026. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or a universal prescription. Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain, with room for network variation, and test stream health.

Input format Minimum Recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Motion, resolution, frame rate, codec, and actual sustained uplink all affect the practical choice. A connection that briefly reaches the target is not enough evidence that it can carry it continuously.

Audio settings

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, its recommended advanced settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, YouTube requires AAC and lists 48 kHz/384 kbps as its recommendation. Inspect every file in the playlist: clips may have different sample rates, channel layouts, or no audio at all.

Prepare and validate the video files

  1. Inventory the files. Record each file’s resolution, frame rate, video codec, pixel format, audio format, and duration. Decide whether to preserve the source dimensions and frame rate or convert to one consistent output.
  2. Check the GPU and FFmpeg build. Verify that your exact GPU supports the selected encoder and that your FFmpeg build exposes it. NVIDIA’s support varies by hardware generation and codec; do not infer AV1, HEVC, or H.264 capability from the NVIDIA name alone.
  3. Check audio and timestamps. Confirm that the playlist’s files have the intended audio and that their timing is suitable for a continuous output. Mixed formats can require conversion or careful filter and timestamp handling.
  4. Test real transitions. Play through file boundaries and the end-to-start loop with the actual files and FFmpeg build. Check for black frames, audio gaps, timestamp errors, unexpected scaling, and stalled playback. Do not promise gapless looping until it has been tested.

There is no single FFmpeg loop command that guarantees seamless behavior for every container, codec, and playlist. The correct input arrangement depends on the files and the playback method you choose.

Configure FFmpeg and connect to YouTube

  1. Get the stream destination and key. In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s encoder or streaming setup and copy the ingest URL and stream key. Select RTMPS when YouTube provides it. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or include it in screenshots or logs.
  2. Set the output deliberately. Configure FFmpeg to use the chosen video encoder (for example, h264_nvenc for H.264), resolution, frame rate, CBR target bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Configure audio to a YouTube-compatible format and rate. A two-second interval means a keyframe every two seconds of output; ensure your encoder settings express that interval for the chosen frame rate.
  3. Arrange playback and repetition. Use an input or playlist arrangement that advances through the intended files and returns to the start when appropriate. Verify ordering and end-of-list behavior rather than assuming a playlist will repeat automatically.
  4. Send the output to the selected ingest endpoint. Provide the RTMPS destination and key to FFmpeg using a method appropriate for your environment. Avoid sharing a command containing the live key. A correctly configured encoder can still fail if the endpoint, key, network path, or account’s live setup is wrong.
  5. Check YouTube Studio before treating it as live. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, that the audio and picture are correct, and that stream health is acceptable before relying on it.

The exact FFmpeg command depends on input format, playlist strategy, scaling, audio layout, FFmpeg build, driver, GPU, and how secrets are supplied. Test the actual command and files first; do not copy a command built for a different media set and assume it will provide uninterrupted playback.

Plan for continuity and unattended operation

Encoding capability and 24/7 uptime are separate problems. The stream can stop if FFmpeg exits, the machine sleeps or reboots, a file becomes unavailable, the disk fills, power fails, or the network drops. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Its API distinguishes the incoming liveStream resource from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast; the documentation gives a continuous 24/7 feed alongside a separate interview broadcast as an example. That distinction can matter for channel and API planning, but a basic encoder user does not need to build an API workflow just to send one feed.

Before leaving the stream unattended

  • Run a representative test with the real files, including a file boundary and a complete playlist loop.
  • Listen for audio loss or clipping and watch for frozen frames, black frames, and unexpected changes in level or resolution.
  • Monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages; local GPU utilization alone does not show whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
  • Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep source files available, and check disk space, power, and sustained upload capacity.
  • Decide how FFmpeg will be restarted after a failure and how you will notice an outage. Process supervision is operating-system and deployment-specific; test any service manager or watchdog you choose rather than assuming a generic configuration works everywhere.

NVIDIA’s 24 July 2019 FFmpeg guide documents nvidia-smi dmon and nvidia-smi -q -d UTILIZATION for inspecting GPU utilization. These can help identify encoder or decoder load; they do not establish YouTube delivery health. The current GPU matrix is the more relevant check for exact hardware and codec support; NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK page showed version 13.1 on 3 October 2026.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg reports that h264_nvenc is unavailable: Check that the installed FFmpeg build includes NVENC support, the NVIDIA driver is installed and usable, and the exact GPU supports the encoder. Confirm against NVIDIA’s support matrix; CUDA support alone does not establish NVENC support.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the current ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, that the channel is ready to stream, and that the machine can reach the RTMPS endpoint. Replace a key if it may have been exposed.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Test sustained upload capacity, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, and check for competing network traffic. A nominal speed-test result does not prove that the connection can sustain the encoder’s output.
  • Picture is choppy, frozen, or unexpectedly scaled: Compare output frame rate and dimensions with the chosen settings and source files. Check GPU load and whether decoding or filters are bottlenecking the pipeline; NVENC can accelerate encoding without accelerating every other stage.
  • There is a gap, silence, or timestamp error between clips: Inspect the files’ codecs, time bases, frame rates, and audio layouts. Test transitions and the loop with the actual playlist; adjust the input arrangement or normalize incompatible media as needed.
  • The stream stops after running for a while: Check FFmpeg’s exit reason, machine power and sleep settings, network stability, storage availability, and whether a tested supervisor restarts the process. A working NVENC encoder does not itself provide recovery.
  • GPU monitoring looks normal but viewers report a problem: Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and the viewer-facing playback. GPU utilization only describes local activity, not successful ingest or playback.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Before looping recordings, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to stream every video and audio track. A recording being publicly accessible or already posted on YouTube does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content; this guide does not establish that any particular reused content is eligible for monetization or free of claims.
